阅读理解。     Very few people enjoy exams. I don"t, either. And although I tell myself not to worry about them, I always
do! So I am not surprised that my students worry about them, too, even though they usually don"t need to.
Because they are afraid of failing. However, since it is hard not to worry at all, we all must try not to worry
too much. Why? Because worrying makes exams worse! How to do this?
     1. Ask the teacher about how to revise and about exam skills- how to work when you are in the exam.
     2. Good students don"t wait until the week before an exam. They study all through the year. It is not
possible to learn everything at the last minute. So don"t leave it till then!
    3. If you start planning and working for each exam early and you make sure that you understand what
you are studying, then, when it is over, you"ll be able to say, "What a good exam that was!"
     4. Take a short rest during your time of work and revision. If your mind is tired, it will not remember well.
Work at the time when you know you will work at your best.
     5. If you are studying in the evening, don"t go straight to bed afterwards. Your mind will still be "going
round and round" - thinking too much. Do something else, maybe walk or get exercise. Choose something
that will relax you, and make you think of other things.
    6. If you feel bad, talk to someone about your worries. But don"t be too relaxed! Some stress over exams
makes you work hard for them. 1. How does the writer feel about exams? A. Excited.
B. Bored.
C. Worried.
D. Surprised. 2. Why are the students afraid of exams? A. Because they are afraid of failing.
B. Because they want to get full marks.
C. Because exams are usually hard.
D. Because they think their teachers will be angry with them they can"t pass the exams. 3. Which is NOT mentioned (提到) in the passage?A. Good students don"t wait until the week before an exam.
B. Start planning and working for each exam early.
C. If you don"t know how to work for an exam, ask the teach about it.
D. You should sleep well before the exam. 4. According to the passage, if you feel bad, you"d better ______. A. take a short rest
B. tell someone about your worries
C. walk or get exercise
D. keep busy working and forget your worries 5. The writer of the passage is probably a ______.A. student

In our personal life, we communicate and share experiences with others. However, how well we do it depends
on (取决于) our ability to express ourselves through spoken and written language. Luckily, increasing (增加)
our word power can make us own the skills we need to communicate better with others and can also help us
get better results in our study.
When you see a new word, whether through reading or hearing someone say the word, just be ready to
take out your dictionary and look it up-learn about the word and anything that relates (与…相关) to it. If you
understand the word, you"ll hopefully remember it well.
Meanwhile, you"d better write down words to learn. You can go through the dictionary, magazine and
newspaper or even take down the unknown words you hear. Try to review them every day-look at the words
and speak them out loudly. Copy the words over and over again, along with their meanings, and you will
surprisingly remember them in no time.
You can also do word searches, crossword puzzles or other word games. Playing these games, you are
more likely to come across new words, and when you are caught in new words, study them. The more words
you have in your brain"s word bank, the better you will become at these word games. You will be remembering,
learning and having fun, too.
Finally, reading is also believed to be an excellent way to learn new words and build up your vocabulary.
Read things you are interested in, because in this way, you are less likely to become bored. But don"t skip over
(忽略) those words you don"t know. Instead, you should remember and use them in your own daily
conversations. Use them more, and you"ll surely have a better chance of remembering them.                                                Topic: Increasing Your Vocabulary

If you want to become a better reader, what should you know about speed of reading?
Some people read very rapidly (很快地), while others read very slowly. But which one is better?
The rapid reader may be a good reader when he reads a storybook for fun. But he may not be able to
slow down enough to read directions (说明) carefully. He may read so rapidly that he does not take time to
understand fully the ideas and information which are important to remember.
The slow reader may be a good reader when he reads directions for making something. But he may
spend too much time in reading a simple story which is meant to be enjoyed but is not important enough to
be remembered.
So, you see, either a rapid reader or a slow reader is not really a good one. If you wish to become a
better reader, here are four important things to remember about speed of reading.
     1. Knowing why you are reading will often help you to know whether to read rapidly or slowly.
     2. Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are directions for making or doing something,
science and history books, and Maths problems. You must read such things slowly or remember each
important step and understand each important idea.

from friends and bits of news from hometown papers.
     4. In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast, as you go
along. You will need to read certain (某些) pages rapidly and then slow down and do more careful reading
when you come to important ideas.
1. What should be read rapidly?
A. Directions for making something.
B. Maths problems.
C. Science and history books.
D. Storybooks, newspapers, personal letters, etc.
2. What is the important thing you should keep in mind about speed of reading?
A. To read as fast as you can.
B. To fit your reading speed to your needs.
C. To read as slowly as possible.

When you cough or sneeze, please turn your head away from others and cover your mouth with the full
part of your hand. Afterwards, you should say, "Excuse me." This is a rule I set for my students.
It is so simple, but many kinds have never been told to do this. In fact, I notice adults cough and sneeze
in public without putting a hand over the mouth. I hate traveling by subway (地铁) in New York during cold
and flu season, because it is certain that someone is going to stand right behind me and cough or sneeze on
my neck.
One important thing I point out to the kids is that after they sneeze or cough on their hand, they should
wash their hands as soon as possible. Otherwise, they will be passing those germs (病菌) along to everything
and everyone they touch.
In order to help the kids remember this rule, I tell them about an old story. It says that when you sneeze,
evil spirits jump into your body. If you don"t cover your mouth, the spirits will enter, but if you cover your
mouth, you will keep them out, We say "God bless you" when someone sneezes, and in Germany you should
say "Gesundheit". That means "Good health to you." Both expressions are said just in case you didn"t cover
your mouth in time and the spirits were able to enter your body. The kids love finding out the origins (起源)
of these expressions and it encourage them to put the advice to use more often.
