resources(资源) on Earth. To protect these resources, we need to keep the air clean and the water
drinkable. We need to keep the soil (土壤)healthy. How do we do that?
Protect the land
The soil that covers fields and farms provides much of the food we eat. Human activities such as
plowing(耕) fields, mining(采矿), and building highways can destroy (破坏)the land. Erosion happen
when wind and water carry away the soil. Soil erosion can turn rich farmland into a desert wasteland.
So does this mean we shouldn"t build a highway or plow a field? Of course not. But it does mean we
might think about Earth-friendly ways of doing those things.
Today farmers plow their fields in different ways to prevent erosion. They try to use less water for their
crops. They keep animals from eating the growing grass in just one area. Farmers also plant trees to
prevent erosion from happening.
Save the Trees
Another human activity that damages the land is deforestation(采伐森林). People take away a large
number of trees from a forest. Millions of square kilometers of forest disappear each year. When this
happens, many plants and animals lose their places to live. They may die out, or become very few.
Scientists haven"t even discovered all the living things in the forest. We may be losing some without even
knowing they are there. Trees absorb (吸收)and use carbon dioxide (二氧化碳)when they make food.
Environmentalists encourage careful management of the forests. They ask people to replant trees after
they cut down the forest.
Recycle, Reuse, Reduce
People throw a piece of paper into the wastebasket after using it. The paper becomes trash. Where
does the trash go next? Much of our trash ends up in landfills(垃圾填埋地). They take up valuable land
and sometimes pollute the water, air, and land around them. More than a third of the trash in landfills is
paper. Recycling, reusing, and reducing what you throw away can cut down on the need for more landfills. In fact, we can recycle about eighty percent of household trash.
B. Cutting down trees and farming.
C. Wind and rain carrying away soil.
D. Building highways on the farmland.
B. To encourage careful management of the forest.
C. To take away a large number of trees from the forest.
D. To keep good places for animals and plants to live in.
B. Very little.
C. One third.
D. Four fifths.
B. To tell people how to protect natural resources.
C. To show how the lands are destroyed by people.
D. To discuss ways of protecting animals and plants.

举一反三
are overweight, and some of this because of their bad eating habits. Most teenagers love food with a lot
of fat, oil, salt, and sugar. People often call this kind of food "junk food".
But bad eating habits go beyond fast food. We find many teenagers eat unhealthily. Some don"t have
breakfast before they go to school. During the day, some don"t have a proper meal for lunch. In a recent
survey at one school , scientists found that over two thirds of the students didn"t follow a healthy diet.
They didn"t like vegetables, and many of them didn"t like fruits. They preferred to eat food with a lot of
salt, sugar, or fat.
Parents today also worry about their children"s diet. Some doctors give the following advice:
Teenagers shouldn"t eat too much junk food.
Teenagers shouldn"t eat food with too much salt. Salt can cause high blood pressure in the future.
Teenagers should eat food with less fat, oil, and sugar.
Teenagers need to eat some fruits and vegetables every day. fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins

The world is not only hungry, but it is also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since nearly
70 percent (百分比) of the earth"s surface is covered with water. But about 97 percent of this huge
amount is sea water, or salt water. Man can only drink and use the other 3 percent-the fresh water from
rivers, lakes, underground, and other sources (资源). And we cannot even use all of that, because some
of it is in the form of icebergs and glaciers(冰川). Even worse, some of it has been polluted.
However, as things stand today, this small amount of fresh water is still enough for us. But our need for
water is increasing (增加) rapidly-almost day by day. Only if we take steps to deal with this problem
now can we avoid (避免) a severe (严重的) worldwide water shortage later on.
We all have to learn how to stop wasting our valuable water. One of the first steps is to develop ways
of reusing it.
Today in most large cities, water is used only once and then sent out into a sewer system (下水道).
From there it returns to the sea or runs into underground storage tanks. But it is possible to pipe used
water to a purifying (净化) plant. There it can be treated with chemicals so that it can be used again, just
as if it were fresh from a spring.
But even if every large city purified and reused its water, we still would not have enough. All we"d have
to do to make use of the vast reserves (贮备) of sea water in the world is to remove the salt.
If we take these steps we"ll be in no danger of drying up.

Young people should be enjoying the best time of their lives, but those in their twenties and thirties
are in worse health than their parents, a British survey has found.
Drinking too much, eating fast food and being short of exercise all have a bad influence on young
people. As a result, the young are more likely (可能的) to have headaches, catch colds or become
stressed than their parents.
According to the survey, those aged between 18 and 34 are three times more likely to catch colds
than the older people. The following are the main reasons:
The old people usually eat more healthily. More than four in ten old people eat five or more portions (份) of fruit or vegetables a day. It"s two times the number of the young men and women. Six in ten old
people cook their own meals every day, compared to less than one third of the young people. Almost
10% of the young people admit (承认) that they eat fast food for every meal and 2% say they only eat
at restaurants.
The old people are also more likely to take a lot of exercise. 12% of them spend at least 30 minutes
doing exercise each day. They are healthier. However, only 9% of the young do so.
