In order to know a foreign language thoroughly, four things are necessary. Firstly, we must be able to understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it ourselves, correctly, with confidence and without hesitation. Thirdly, we must be able to read the language and fourthly, we must be able to write it. We must be able to compose(组成)sentences that are grammatically correct. We must know how to arrange sentences in paragraphs, so as to write a good letter or composition.
There is no easy way to succeed in language learning. A good memory is of great help, but it is not enough simply to memorize rules from a grammar book. It is not much use learning by heart long lists of words and their meaning. We learn words not by ourselves, but in sentences. We must learn by using the language. “Learn through use” is a good piece of advice for those who are studying a new language. Practice is very important. We must practice speaking and writing the language whenever we can.

Playing is serious business for children. In fact, it’s what they do best! Ask them why they do it, and kids will probably say, “Because it’s fun!” But it’s much more than that. It’s also good for them.
Studies show that from birth babies begin learning through playing. They use their five senses to get to know their new world. Touching allows them to discover how different things feel. Brightly colored toys and clothing help develop a baby’s sense of sight.
When small children choose which toy to play with, they begin developing their abilities in making decisions. Children love toys that allow them to use their imagination. Sometimes an empty box is more fun than a high-tech toy. That’s because a box can become anything a child imagines it to be.
Crayons, paints and Ply-Doh(彩色塑泥)are also good because they allow children to create. Traditional building blocks teach important pre-math skills like problem-solving.
Playing doesn’t become any less important once children start school. __*___. Kids learn how to share, take turns and play by the rules.

Robots seems very new to most people. But they have a long history. The first one was made by a Greek inventor, you may see robots are used in factories. They are used to do many dangerous, difficult or boring jobs.
Some people can’t look after themselves and robots are used to help them. For example, some people can’t see, many of these people use a dog to help them. In the future, robot dogs might take the place of these guide dogs.
Robots are also used in American hospital. At one hospital, a robot takes meals from the kitchen to sick people’s rooms. It never loses its way because it has a map of the hospital in its computer system.

Passage 2
Dear Linda,
I have been in England three months now. I hope you don"t think I"ve forgotten you. There have been so many places to see and so many things to do that I"ve not had much time for writing letters.
I shall soon be starting my studies at King"s College. So far I"ve been learning about England and British ways of living. I won"t tell you about London. There are plenty of books you can read and plenty of pictures you can look at. I"m sure you"ll be more interested to know what I think about the life here.
I find some of the customs (风俗) new and interesting. People here do not shake hands as much as we do in Europe. During the first few weeks I was often surprised because people did not put out their hands when I met them. Men raise their hats to women but not to each other.
Yours,
Alice
