I am a college student. Nowadays games on the net are very popular with college students. Some of
my roommates aer very intererted in them. They not only play games in their free time, but also keep
talking about them at night when lights are off, and they regard games as part of life. I"ve begged (乞求)
them to give it up, but they wouldn"t listen to me. It has become a rather big problem. Should I report it
to our teachers or do something else?
Ted
Dear Ted,
Drop it. Your roommates, as grown-ups, can do whatever they want with their time so long as it
doesn"t break school rules or violate (防碍) other people"s interests.
Playing perhaps gives these students relaxation (放松) from hard study. If they play too often, have
little time to study, and they will reap what they have sown, but you will not. Reporting to the teachers
would only harm your good name in your dormitory (宿舍). However you have rights to ask your
roommates to be quiet when you need sleep. If they aren"t angry with you, they will stop talking. But be
polite and friendly. Perhaps, in return, join them in a game or two.

The Earth gives us a lot of things. We also give the Earth a lot, but some of the things are not good.
In nature, when something dies, other animals and plants get food from it. Every animal or plant gives
food for other animals or plants. However, animals can"t get food from many of the things that we "give"
he Earth. Animals and plants can"t eat metal, plastic and glass. These things will stay in the ground for
many, many years.
Some rubbish is very dangerous for plants and animals. In some places, many animals live together.
One animal makes food for many more animals. If we put rubbish and chemicals in the water, the plankton
(浮游生物) can die. If there isn"t any plankton, many animals have nothing to eat.
So what can we do? Don"t leave any rubbish in the countryside! Don"t make so much rubbish!
B. rubbish
C. chemicals
D. pollution
The world is not only hungry, but it is also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since
nearly 70% of the earth"s surface is covered with water. But about 97% of that is sea water, or salt
water. Man can only drink and use the other 3%-the fresh water from rivers, lakes, underground, and
other sources. And we can not even use all of that. Even worse, some of it has been made dirty.
However, as things stand today, this fresh water is still enough for us. But our need for water is
becoming larger and larger quickly-almost day by day. We should take steps to do with this problem
now and in this way we can get away from a serious worldwide water shortage (缺少) later on.
We all have to learn how to stop wasting our valuable water. One of the first steps is to develop
ways of reusing it. Today in most large cities, water is used only once and then sent out into a sewer
system (下水道). From there it returns to sea or runs into underground places.
But even if every large city reused its water, we still would not have enough. All we"d have to do
to make use of sea water in the world is to remove the salt. If we take these steps we"ll be in no danger
of drying up.
B. we haven"t got enough fresh water
C. only 70% of the earth"s surface is water
D. more water is sent into sewer systems

Like a lot of middle school students, Jessica has a problem. She and her parents don"t get on well.
"I really want to be my daddy"s good girl. But it seems he just doesn"t understand. He talks to me but
doesn"t listen to me," said Jessica, a student from Grade Nine.
Do you and your parents have problems?
A study shows that many Chongqing families have the same problems as Jessica"s family. The children,
12-15 years old, don"t like talking with their parents much. They aren"t happy at home. Of course, lots of
other children feel that way. But you and your parents will be happier if you can be friends. Here are some
ways to have a good talk with your parents: Find a good time to talk, like when you"re eating dinner, going
out for a walk or watching TV. Tell them something you"re interested in, or ask them about their lives
when they were young. They love to talk about that! Listen to them carefully, and look at them in the
eyes.
If you try these ways, you will probably get on better with your parents.
