In Canada you can find dogs, cats, horses etc. in almost every family. These are their pets. People love
these pets and regard them as their good friends. Before they keep them at their houses, they take them to
animal hospitals to give them needles so that they won"t carry disease (疾病). They have special animal food
stores, though they can get animal food in almost every store. Some people spend around two hundred
Canadian dollars a month on animal food. When you visit people"s homes, they would be very glad to show
you their pets and they are very proud of them. You will also find almost every family has a bird feeder in their
garden. All kinds of birds are welcomed to come and have a good meal. They are free to come and go and
nobody is allowed to kill any animals in Canada. They have a law against killing wild (野生的) animals. If you
killed an animal, you would be punished (处罚). If an animal happened to get run over by a car, people would
be very sad about it.
People in Canada have many reasons to like animals. One of them might be: Their family tie is not as
close as ours. When children grow up, they leave their parents and start their own career (生涯). Then the
seniors (老人) will feel lonely. But pets can solve this problem. They can be good friends and never leave
them alone.

first thing to do in the morning, others read newspapers as soon as they have free time during the day so that
they can learn what is happening in the world.
Sometimes, we do not have enough time to read all the news carefully, so we just take a quick look at the
front page. At other times, we may be in such a hurry that we only have a few minutes to look at the headlines
(标题) of the passage.
Newspapers can be found everywhere in the world. We can get many different kinds of newspapers in
big cities, but in some mountain villages we can see few newspapers.
Some newspapers are published (出版) once a week, but most of the papers are published once a day with
many pages, some even published twice a day! You know different people enjoy reading different newspapers.
Some like world news, and others prefer short stories. They just choose what they are interested in.
Today newspapers in English have the largest numbers of readers in the world, The English language is so
popular that many Chinese students are reading English newspapers such as China Daily or 21st Century. Also
they bring us more and more information with internet.
So remember to be polite.
When to arrive
The first thing to remember is that when a friend invites you over, you need to arrive on time. If your
friend tells you to come "around 3:00", that means you can turn up a little bit after 3:00. But usually it is a good
idea to arrive at the right time.
What to bring
Often it is also nice to bring something to your friend"s house. This could be a box of chocolates for you
two to share, or maybe a movie that you can watch together. You can also bring some flowers. A little gift is a
nice way to show your friend that you are excited to be at his house.
How to greet (问候)
When you visit your friend"s house, you may also meet his parents. You should tell them who you are and
they may tell you their names. As a child, I went to visit my friend Paul. I called his parents by their first names
John and Mary. But now I know it is more polite to call them Mr. or Mrs. Smith. This will show them more
respect (尊重) and then they may tell you to call them by their first names. Another way to show respect is to
call them Madam or Sir.
It is a cool thing to visit a friend"s house. Be polite to your friend and your friend"s parents, and you will
be invited again!

Dear editor (编辑), I live in a beautiful city. Many visitors come to my city. There are so many colorful peacocks (孔雀) here. The peacocks mostly live on the grass land of Dongfeng Square. They are given food freely by visitors. They usually throw food to them, and don"t think about at all whether the food is right or not. Some of the peacocks became ill, some even died after eating the bad food given by the visitors. I"m sure most of the visitors who throw food to the peacocks really like the birds, but don"t realize that they may be doing them harm. The visitors should be told that what they have done is very harmful to the birds, and this kind of thing must be stopped from happening. Perhaps we can build some small shops beside Dongfeng Square to sell peacock food. For us every person, it is our duty to give more love to these beautiful birds and to look after them carefully. Yours, Sun Yan |
