There have been many great inventions, things that changed the way we live. The first great invention was one that is still very important today- the wheel. This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distances. For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that had as much effect(影响) as the wheel. Then in the early 1800’s the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People didn’t have to explore(探测) much anymore. They began to work instead to make life better. In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the light and the radio. These all became a big part of our life today. The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions. The helicopter in 1909. Movies with sound in 1926. The computer in 1928. And jet planes in 1930. This was also a time when a new material was first made. Nylon came in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wear. By this time most people had a very good life, Man has a desire to explore again, the world was known to man but the stars were not. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step. Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their steps into space. In 1969 man took his biggest step from the earth. Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a beginning thought. Most people want to be happy, but few know how to find happiness. Money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. Aristotle, a Greek thinker, said, "Happiness depends upon (取决于)ourselves." In other words, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions(建议) to help you be happier. The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future. For example, getting into college or getting a good job -that we fail to enjoy the present. You should enjoy life"s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives. Another secret to living a happy life is to be active, and have hobbies where you forget your problems and time. Many people experience this dancing, or playing a sport, such as swimming. You can forget about your problems, and only think about the activity. Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If you want to feel happier, do good things for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping to buy food for an elderly person, or simply help out around the house by washing the dishes. 小题1:The best title of the passage is______.A.Money Makes You Happy | B.The Secrets of Happiness | C.Ideas for Helping Other People to Be Happy | D.Good Friends Make You Happy | 小题2:The passage gives us ______pieces of advice on happiness.小题3:The writer thinks that______.A.everyone knows how to live a happier life | B.it"s wrong to spend time on work | C.hobbies take up too much time | D.doing good things for someone can make you happier | 小题4:Which of the following is not mentioned(提及)in the passage?A.Reading a good book. | B.Traveling to a foreign country. | C.Playing a sport. | D.Spending time with close friends. |

There was once a young man called Paul in a village in the USA. Paul was very lazy because his father was a rich farmer and he didn’t have to work. Mr Smith, a neighbour of his, was a blacksmith (铁匠). He used to work in his shop all day. Paul spent hours and hours watching how the blacksmith worked every day. “Young man, why don’t you try your hand to make a shoe tack (铁钉), even it is only to pass the time?” said the blacksmith one day, “ Maybe it will be useful to you some day.” Finally, the lazy boy began to have a try. I’m glad it’s Sunday again. I can stay in bed 1 I like, drinking tea and read those thick newspapers that are brought by the newsboy through the letterbox at 8:30. In this way, I can catch up with all the 2 I haven’t got time to read during my work time. When I 3 the papers, I then prepare my bath. The Sunday morning bath is 4 of the week. There’s no need to hurry because there’s no bus to 5 and my friends are told not to call me up before noon on Sundays, so there is no danger of being troubled by the telephone. 6 spend the afternoon after lunch is always a bit of problem. In summer I can go to the park and sit in a chair 7 boys playing football, while in winter I sit in front of the fire and 8 when reading a book, sometimes I turn on the television and sleep through an old film.
