The taste could be one thing that makes us like drinking soda. It is delicious. In fact, it is so good that many people drink it with every meal.
Even if you wanted to drink something else, you would be hard to find it as displayed in stores, at fast-food chains and supermarket. You might not realize that Coke and Pepsi are everywhere until you try to stop drinking soda.
The most important thing about soda is convenient. If you want something in a hurry, it can be taken easily and convenient to drink.
Everyone in the world knows these soft drinks. Companies spend billions of dollars on advertising sodas, and put them up everywhere, in stores, restaurants, stations, museums, and even schools.

At the meeting, the people were impressed by the kindness of his mother with the scar, but the little boy was still embarrassed and hid himself from everyone. However, he could hear clearly the conversation between his mother and the teacher.
“How did you get the scar on your face?” the teacher asked.
The mother replied, “When my son was a baby, he was in a room that caught on fire. Everyone was too afraid to go in because the fire was out of control, but I went in. As I was running towards his bed, I saw a burning wood falling down and I placed myself over him trying to protect him. I was knocked to be unconscious (无知觉的), but luckily, a fireman came in and saved both of us.” She touched the burned side of her face. “This scar will be forever, but until today, I have never regretted doing what I did.”

I sometimes wonder what a being from another planet might report back about our way of life. "The planet Earth is ruled by a mysterious creature that sits or stands in a room and makes a strange ticking sound. It has a face with twelve black marks and two hands. Men can do nothing without its permission, and it fastens its young round people"s wrists so that everywhere men go they are still under its control. This creature is the real master of Earth and men are its slaves(奴隶)."
Whether or not we are slaves of time today depends on our culture and personality, but it is believed that many years ago kings kept special slaves to tell the time. Certain men were very clever at measuring(量) the time of clay according to the beating of their own hearts. They were made to stand in a fixed place and every hour or so would shout tire time. So it seems that the first clocks were human beings.
However, men quickly found more convenient and reliable(可靠的) ways of telling the time. They learned to use the shadows cast by the sun. They marked the hours on candles, used sand in hour- glasses, and invented water-clocks. Indeed, any serious student of antique should spend as much time as possible visiting palaces, stately homes and museums to see some of the finest examples of clocks from the past.
Antique clocks could be very expensive, but one of the joys of collecting clocks is that it is still possible to find quite cheap ones for your own home. After all, if you are going to be ruled by time, why not invest in air antique clock and perhaps make a future profit(收益)?

C.Observing shadows cast by the sun. |
D.Keeping slaves busy day and night. |
A.state-owned houses |
B.houses in very good condition |
C.grand houses open to the public |
D.houses where statesmen meet regularly |
A.to introduce the culture of antique clocks |
B.to offer some advice on collecting antique clocks |
C.to compare different ways to make a future profit |
D.to explain convenient and reliable ways of telling time |
I looked across at the others: shelves of similar cameras placed along the wall, offering different prices. With so many models to choose from, it seemed that I would have to spend hours weighing X against Y, always trying to consider Z and possibly H at the same time. But when I had finished, I would still have only the same two certainties that I had entered the store with: first, soon after I carried my new camera out of the shop, it would be worth half what I paid for it; and second, my wonderful camera would very quickly be replaced by a new model.
But something in the human soul whispers that you can beat these traps (陷阱) by making the right choice. In the end, I agreed to try the model I had chosen. The salesgirl seemed a kind girl. So I let her take out my chosen camera from the cupboard, show how it took excellent pictures of my fellow shoppers... and when she started to introduce the special features, I cut in to ask whether I needed to buy a carry-case and a memory card as well.
Why do we think that new choices still offer us anything new? Perhaps it is because they offer a chance to avoid facing the fact that our real choices in this culture are far more limited than we would like to imagine.

A.try the camera to see if there was anything wrong with it |

A.knew very little about it |
B.didn’t trust the salesgirl any more |
C.wanted to make sure he chose the best one |
D.wanted to take pictures of his fellow shoppers |
A.salespersons are not always very kind |
B.people waste too much money on cameras |
