my mother calls, "Herbert! It"s seven o"clock! Get up!"
Herbert answers, "I"m coming!" and goes right back to sleep. I"m not at all like my brother. I don"t like to go
to bed at night but I don"t mind getting up in the morning. I usually wake up before my mother calls me. I jump
out of bed and go into the bathroom to take a shower. I get dressed, brush my teeth, comb my hair, and get
ready to go downstairs for breakfast as soon as my mother calls.
But not Herbert. He just sleeps. A military band (军乐队) in our bedroom could not wake him up. I call him
and say, "Get up! Mum will be up here to pull you out of bed if you don"t get up immediately!"
But he just sleeps. After calling a few more times my mother has to come upstairs and pull Herbert out of
bed. It"s that way every day with my little brother. Perhaps some day he"ll learn to get up on time, but I really
don"t think so.

With a smile, the teacher drew two circles-one as large as a big wheel (轮子), the other smaller.
"Of course, I"ve learned much more. But a teacher does not necessarily have fewer questions than
his students. Now look at these two cricles. Within the big one is my knowledge of things, and within
the smaller one yours. Out of the cricles is what is still unknown to us. Since mine is larger, the line
that marks out (划……的界限) the circle is longer. That means I have more chances to face what is
still unknown. And that"s why I myself have more questions than you do. The more you learn, the more
questions you have. You will never learn enough, you know."

Last Sunday I saw the worst storm (暴雨) in years. It came suddenly and went on for three hours. After lunch, I went into my room and had a rest. The air was hot. All was quiet. Then strong wind started blowing into my room. Pieces of paper on my desk flew high into the air and some flew out of the open window. As I ran to catch them, big drops of rain began to fall. When I came back into my house, it was raining harder and harder. I tried hard and managed to close the window. Then I heard a loud sound from the back of the house. I ran out of my room to find out what had happened: a big tree had fallen down and broken the top of the backroom. | |||
