John Brown, an office worker, lives in Washington, and he inherited (继承) $1, 000, 000 when he was 23. He didn"t feel happy at all. His college friends were looking for their first jobs, but he didn"t have to. John decided to keep living a simple life like everyone else. He didn"t tell any of his friends and gave $ 100, 000 of his money to a charity that helped poor children to live better lives. Today he is 36. He still wears cheap shoes and clothes and owns a small car only, but he is much happier. Up to now John has helped 15 children from poor countries all over the world, $ 200 a month for each. The children do not receive the money in cash (现金). The money pays for the children"s school expenses, food, medical care and clothing. John receives a report each year on the children"s progress. They can write to each other, but usually the children do not speak English. When John first heard about these children, he wanted to help them. "It was not anything special," he said. Once upon a time, there were two thieves who wanted to steal some sheep .which were fed by a farmer. They had watched the sheep for a long time. And they knew that there were twenty-eight sheep in the farmer"s yard. In a deep night, they came to the outside of the farmer"s yard and got ready to steal all the sheep. But they found that the gate was locked inside, and they couldn"t open it. Finally, they came up with a good idea. They dug a big hole in the wall so that one of the thieves was able to go into the yard and pass the sheep out one by one to the other. In order to stop the sheep from running away, the thief outside must cut off its head quickly with a sharp knife while the thief inside was passing a sheep out of the hole. They started to work like that and the work was going well. "One, two, three...,"they both counted the numbers silently, "...twenty-six, twenty-seven..." However, the thief inside stopped counting. "Where is the twenty-eighth sheep?" he thought. "Did I make a mistake?" So he stretched (伸) his head out of the hole to ask the other thief. However, the thief outside thought it must be the twenty-eighth sheep"s head. He didn"t think about anything and cut off the head at once.
