Around two weeks ago, I was invited to be a judge(裁判) at a college. All of the students had been given a piece of paper with a topic written on it. The first one to speak looked a little . “My dear friends and judges,” he said loudly, “this is an unfair ! I have been given the paper,” he continued, “to speak on the topic with just a few minutes’ preparation, those who come after me have more time to their speeches!” He then left the stage and went out of the hall. I met him later by chance. “Who said life is ?” I asked him with a smile, and I asked him to walk with me to my car. “Have you seen the figures(数字) they show when a new car is into the market, saying how good it is?” “Yes,” he nodded. “But they put a after all these figures. They say all the figures are in ideal road conditions!” “Yes,” he said again. “Can you show me some ideal road conditions?” I asked him, and he smiled. “The car that sells well is the one will provide power and speed on the roads. That car is the winner.” We had got to the car. “Don’t look for ideal competition conditions,” I said. “ the unfair and come out a winner!” I looked back as I drove away and saw him smile and wave, and I knew he would do as I said.

It was the Greek shopkeeper who taught me about the power of being kind. In 2008, I left Spain to study alone in London. My parents had to bring up my three younger sisters and two younger brothers, so I found three part-time jobs to pay for my studies. I worked early mornings and late nights, so I was tired, really tired, all the time. Unfortunately, I got a cold and had a very high fever. Because I had spent all my free time working since I came to London, I hardly took part in any activities and I had no friends. Besides, I was too shy to communicate with others and ask others for help. After sleeping on the sickbed for two days, I went out to get some food. Normally, I went to the supermarket, but this time I went into the Greek shop, a small corner shop, because it was closer. I picked up some food and gave it to the shopkeeper, who asked me, ‘You look terrible, my boy! You are not feeling well, right?’ I said YES in a low voice. She pointed at the salami (腊肠) and bread I was buying and offered, ‘I can make you a sandwich, so you don’t have to do it yourself.’ I nodded without saying a word. So, she made the sandwich and asked me to wait a moment. She went into the back room and came again with a bowl of hot soup. ‘It will warm you up,’ she said with a friendly smile. What really warmed me up was not the soup. It was her smile that told me she cared me. Her kindness reminded me of my mother. I had been quite shy, but from that day on, I did not let shyness prevent me from communicating with and being kind to others. Now I work in a children’s hospital in Africa. I love my work and people around me. I always bring my smile and kindness to them. 小题1:When did the writer leave for London? I grew up in the 1950s with very practical parents. My mother washed aluminum foil(铝箔纸)after she cooked in it, and then she reused it. She was the earliest recycle(回收)queen before people had a name for it. My father was no different. He preferred getting old shoes fixed to -buying new ones. Their marriage was good and their dreams were focused(集中).Their best friends lived just a wave away. Though my parents have passed away, I can see them now - Dad in trousers, a T-shirt and a hat and Mom in a house dress, lawnmower(割草机)in one hand and dishtowel in the other. It was the time to fix things -a curtain rod(挂帘杆),the kitchen radio, the screen door, the oven door, and so on. They fixed all things we had. It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing and renewing made me want to scream.1 wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant being rich. Throwing things away meant you knew there"d always be more. I often thought like that. But then my mother died, and on that clear summer night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I learned that sometimes there isn"t any more. Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away and it will never return. So, while we have it, it is the best that we love it, care for it, fix it when it"s broken and cure it when it"s sick. This is true for marriage, old cars, children with bad report cards, dogs with bad hips and aging parents and grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it and because we are worth it. 小题1:We can learn that when the writer was young, she_______.A.thought highly of her parents" habits | B.often helped her parents fix old things | C.often threw things away without being noticed | D.at times hated it when her parents fixed old things | 小题2:What did the writer realize afier her mother"s death?A.Her mother truly loved her. | B.She had wasted a lot of money. | C.Things may never return once they are gone. | D.She had hurt her parents for many times. | 小题3:What is the writer"s purpose in writing the passage?A.To advise us to love what we have. | B.To encourage us to recycle old things. | C.To explain why her parents recycled. | D.To help us know about life in the past. |
