A forest fire that burned 55 square kilometres was finally brought under control on Wednesday morning. The fire started on Sunday in Black Bear State Park and quickly spread to nearby areas.
On Monday, police evacuated(疏散) the small town of Lawson and ordered the people to leave their homes. The fire destroyed 20 homes in the area and caused heavy damage to 40 others.
Nobody was hurt. Officials said the damage to homes and cars was between $l million and $2 million. The government declared the town a disaster (灾难) area. The fire spread quickly in the hot, dry weather. Fire fighting was difficult because of strong winds. Firemen from 55 fire departments in the state joined the National Fire Service to put out the fire. Some kept fighting for 24 hours. Fire engines and helicopters dropped water onto the fire. In order to control the fire, firemen cleared a way around the fire.
Police closed King Road to traffic on Tuesday because of heavy smoke. Thousands of tourists had to drive an hour north to Queen Road to pass the fire area.
Some people did not follow the police order. Paul Grayson sent his wife and two children to safety, but he stayed. As the fire came within 50 feet of his house, he started thinking, “Am I foolish? Did I stay here too long, just for a house?”

小题2:What did the police order the people to do?
小题3:Why was fire fighting difficult?

Dear sir,
I’m writing to introduce myself, with the hope of getting the job you advertised in the newspaper.
When I was a child, I liked English and always got good grades. In 1995, after six years of hard work in No.4 Middle School, I entered People’s University of China. I studied English there for four years.
Luckily, I got my first job when I graduated. I taught English in No.4 Middle School from 1999 to 2002.Then I got a chance to receive further education in University of Hawaii in the US. That was a precious (宝贵的) experience in my life. I learnt a lot during those two years, especially the differences between Eastern and Western cultures.
I came back to People’s University of China in 2004. I worked as an assistant professor for 2 years and then a professor. So far I have got 8 years of working experience.
Thank you for reading my letter, and I’ll be glad if you can reply soon.
Yours sincerely,
Wang Tao

People have reported seeing a wild man-like creature in the Himalayas. They call it a Yeti. Each report produces similar descriptions of the creature. Yetis are said to be heavily built and hairy. People believe that it sometimes comes down from the mountains to attack villagers.
In 1998, an American mountain climber said that he saw a Yeti on the Chinese side of the Himalayas. ‘It walked like a human but it had thick black fur and was about six feet tall with huge shoulders, very long arms and large hands,’ he said.
Ten Chinese engineers also reported that they saw a Yeti in the Shennongjia National Forest Park in western Hubei Province. The engineers ran after the creature, which ran with amazing speed and strength.
In 1970, 1,089 footprints were discovered in the snow near Bossburg, Washington in the United States. Footprints are one of the few pieces of hard evidence supporting the existence (存在)of Yetis. These footprints are about 14 to 18 inches long, 5 to 9 inches wide and much larger than those of a human. Also, they are always deeper than footprints made right next to them by men.
Some scientists think that these footprints are not left by Yetis. They say that the footprints could have been made by bears or other animals. They have found that the sun often causes footprints in the snow to become larger. Some scientists even think that these footprints could have been made by people playing a joke.
Dr Krantz, a scientist from Washington State University, has studied reports of Yetis for many years. He believes that there are Yetis while studying the footprints. He says that this creature possibly lived in Asia some 3,000,000 years ago. It could have made its way to other parts of the world and lived on until today.
