张衡（78～139）,东汉文学家、科学家.字平子.南阳西鄂（今河南南阳市卧龙区石桥镇）人.家为著名大姓,祖父张堪曾任蜀郡太守.17岁时游学三辅,后来到京都洛阳,就教于太学,“通《五经》,贯六艺”.虽才高于世,却从无骄尚之情.常常从容淡静,不好交结俗人.
永元中,举孝廉、连辟公府皆不就.当时,天下太平日久,自王侯以下,都非常奢侈,张衡乃作《二京赋》,以讽谏世事.曾应南阳太守鲍德之邀,出任南阳主薄八年,后鲍德调升为大司衣,张衡也就辞职回乡.其后,邓皇后之弟、大将军邓骘奇其才,屡次征召,都推辞不就.
张衡善于制造机巧之物,尤好天文、阴阳、历算之学.汉安帝雅闻张衡精于术学,公车特征拜为郎中,再迁为太史令.在此期间,他制造了观察天象的浑天仪,并著有《灵宪》、《算罔论》,对天体的形成与运行的规律,提出了比较完整的以“气”为基础的宇宙形成论.
