答案
A Report of Body Language
Body language is a supremely important nonverbal method of communication. These complicated, indescribable clusters of physical signals, postures,or even just one excessive blink of an eye, could mean a million different things constituted by a million different cultures around the globe.Facial expressions alone include and are not limited to showing happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, frustration, confusion, excitement, contempt, desire, and even disgust. The interpretation of your internal emotions may be so diverse, subjective and inescapably inaccurate at times, that they easily cause a number of unwanted misunderstandings to happen. This is when learning to effectively demonstrate your body language in particular circumstances becomes more than just leisure entertainment, but a crucial part of life’s communication.
If you have been through language lessons focusing on oral presentations or group discussions, you would have noticed the elaborate focus your teacher had on maintaining eye contact.Eye contact is one of the most commonly used, effortless and yet most easily misinterpreted body languages of all.Directly looking into another person’s eyes could mean that you are interested in another person in a romantic fashion. If you attempt to look away or gaze down immediately,it could subsequently be mistaken as you becoming uninterested or distracted from your object.Eye contact in Asian countries is considered a challenge of authority with a possible tint of hostility.A brief eye contact would naturally be polite, but lingering too long might render you a potential enemy.Completely avoiding eye contact,on the other hand, morphs your image into a person lacking in self confidence.
People also deduce your inner personality following what posture you normally put up.If you stand with your shoulders slumped and your annoyed scowl plastered over your face,in all probability,it would suggest a fairly negative impression to the viewer.Similarly, there are many people who naturally adopt the pose of crossing their arms before them,or hugging something to their chest while they talk. The person who is demonstrating that posture might not be aware of the message they are sending, however, simultaneously, the viewer already perceives an unapproachable, unfeeling, and impolite person from the way you stand and talk. When you cross your arms or hide your chest behind something else,it likely indicates your unwillingness to open up,and your subconscious attempt to create a barrier between yourself and your partner. For public presentations and speeches, many tutorials suggest the presenter to let their arms fall beside their body naturally, instead of holding them up or crossing them. The former would be overly formal and unnatural, whereas the latter hints at opposition or unfriendliness.
The most unfortunate thing about learning body language is that there is no definite right or wrong. What one perceives to be gentlemanly could be intimidating in another’s point of view.Different cultures, languages, environments, and situations also affect the interpretation of one’s body language. Therefore,it is not surprising to say that body language results from an accumulation of life experience. The more communication you have had between you and other people, the more you can learn – from the reactions of your viewers, you will soon reveal the nature of your body language.
