Respecting the Hillside
"We felt it would be good to have a subdued presence from the front," says Eimar Boesjes,an architectural software developer and Internet entrepreneur."It doesn't say 'we're here!' like the other houses."
The house opens away from the street, out into the natural space beyond it,the true focus, with the silvery lines of its cantilevered rooftops hanging in space over the hillside, drawing the eye from the house to the summit of Spencer Butte, framed between two distant ridges.
"The house is playing with the angles of the Butte," notes Van Asperdt."It's an abstracted Butte."
As such, the vertical clear cedar siding on the walls evokes the surrounding trees.Every roof, sheathed in gunmetal gray steel, quotes the Oregon sky in winter. And the granite boulders, positioned beneath each of the drainage spouts, ground the house to the hillside with each drop of falling water.
"These four roofs combined generate 100,000 gallons (380 cubic meters) of rainwater each year. That's a major water problem. There's no reason,in a place like Oregon, where it rains nine months out of the year,we shouldn't collect this water and put it to use."
With the addition of a filtration system, the cistern can provide enough drinking and gray water annually for the couple, their two children, guests, and employees.
In the summer,a fan in the cistern cools the house, pumping 55-degree air into the upper rooms. In the winter, heated rainwater circulates beneath the engineered maple floors.
.Wright evolved a new concept of interior space in architecture.Rejecting the existing view of rooms as single-function boxes,Wright created overlapping and interpenetrating rooms with shared spaces. He designated use areas with screening devices and subtle changes in ceiling heights and created the idea of defined space as opposed to enclosed space.
Walter Burley Griffin was among the many notable architects to emerge from the Wright studios. In 1932 Wright established the Taliesin Fellowship - a group of apprentices who did construction work, domestic chores, and design studies.Four years later,he designed and built both Fallingwater and the Johnson Administration Building. These designs re-invigorated Wright's career and led to a steady flow of commissions, particularly for lower middle income housing.Wright responded to the need for low income housing with the Usonian house,a development from his earlier prairie house.During the last part of his life,Wright produced a wide range of work.Particularly important was Taliesin West,a winter retreat and studio he built in Phoenix,Arizona. He died at Taliesin West in 1959.
