Melanie’s spirits lifted,At least there would be someone her age around.She hoped Amanda was as pleasant as Mrs.Taylor,On Friday Melanie headed for Mrs.Taylor’s house,eager to meet Amanda.Nervously she rang the doorbell.You must be Melanie,said the smiling girl who answered the bell.”I’m Amanda I’ve heard so much about you!”They both said at once and laughed..
Amanda took Melanie to the backyard,where Mrs.Taylor stood looking sadly at her garden.It did look rather desolate.
“This garden used to be so beautiful,”said Amanda.“Maybe we could fix it up,”Melanie suggested,“if you don’t mind”
“Mind?I’d love it!”Mrs.Taylor said“I’ll even help.”
They spent the rest of the day planning the garden’s revival.Their cooperative effort seemed to offer good times to all of them.The girls would enjoy learning how to garden,and Mrs.Taylor would enjoy sharing her knowledge.
Back home in her room that night,Melanie was too excited to sleep.“I’m glad I volunteered to read to Mrs.Taylor,”she thought.“Now I have two new friend.”The summer looked a lot more promising than it had earlier that week.
