举一反三
If so, you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happiness.
Many intelligent people still equate happiness with fun. The truth is that fun and happiness have little or
nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is what we experience after an act.
It is a deeper, more abiding emotion.
Going to an amusement park or a ball game, and watching a movie or television, are fun activities that
help us relax, temporarily orget our problems and maybe even laugh. But they do not bring happiness, because
their positive effects end when the fun ends.
I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that happiness has nothing
to do with fun. These rich, beautiful individuals have constant access to glamorous parties, fancy cars,
expensive homes, everything that spells "happiness".
But in memoirs (回忆录), celebrities reveal the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun: depression,
alcoholism, drug addiction, broken marriage, troubled children and profound loneliness.
The way people stick to the belief that a fun-filled, pain-free life equates happiness actually reduces their
chances of ever obtaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equated with happiness, then pain must be
equated with unhappiness. But, in fact, the opposite is true: More times than not, things that lead to happiness
involve some pain.
As a result, many people avoid the very endeavors that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain
inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment,
civic or charitable work, and self- improvement.

and values. I have been fortunate to have had numerous teachers and professors who I respect for their patience
and intelligence. There are artists that have inspired me by their natural talents and original creativity. I value
many political leaders, who have inspired me by their contributions to society, and their ability to change our
futures. But of all the people I have known in my life, the person I admire most is my father.
As the youngest girl in my family, I always considered myself to be "Daddy"s little girl". While I grew up, it
always made me sad to see so many of my friends and neighbors without a father or father-like figure around.
This helped me appreciate how my father always takes an interest in his children"s lives. In every aspect of my
life my father continuously pushes me to excel, so I could accomplish my work outstandingly among my people.
Whenever I feel like giving up, or have a question or a concern, I know I can always call on him for advice.
From him I have also learned that sometimes you have to put others" needs ahead of your own, but you should
make sure you are not taken advantage of by others. His strength seems to be unbreakable during hard times,
and he is extremely determined to accomplish anything he sets his mind on, no matter how tiny it is. I highly
respect him for how he stands up for what he believes in, and will never back down. I have always admired his
open mind, compassion (同情) for people, and sense of understanding. He is a very reserved man, but to
everybody"s surprise, he has a great sense of humor, and always knows how to put a smile on the faces of his
wife, his children and his friends.

he is of his children, and is still there to support us in whatever we are involved in.

When something goes wrong, try to figure out a solution instead of being absorbed in self pity. Truly happy
people don"t allow setbacks to affect their mood because they know that with a little thought they can turn the

you ought to be growing from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take
a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they
disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are clutching (抓紧) at
one another"s hands for reassurance.
They claim they want to dress as they please, but they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new
directions in music, but somehow they all end up huddled round listening the same record. Their reason for
thinking or acting in thus and such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come at of their cocoon (蚕
茧) into a larger cocoon.
It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her
own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from the
advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today"s parents have come to award high
marks for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the barrier is worth climbing over, the path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music
instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may
have some thoughts that you don"t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it, find yourself, be
yourself Popularity will come with the people who respect you for who you area. That"s the only kind of
popularity that really counts.

C. It is not necessarily bad for a teenager to disagree with his or her classmates
D. Most teenagers claim that they want to do what they like to, but they are actually doing the same.
B. influential
C. instructive
D. authoritative
B. get into the right season and become popular
C. find one"s real self
D. rebel against parents and the popularity wave
outdoors or whether the car in front of you is going faster than the speed limit?
If you get into such arguments, try to think about the story about the six blind men and the elephant.
The first blind man who felt the elephant"s trunk said it was like a snake. The second who felt the elephant"s
side said it was like a wall, while the third said it was like a spear as he touched the animal"s tusk. The fourth,
who got hold of the elephant"s tail insisted that it was like a rope. The fifth man said it looked like a tree as he
put his arms around one of the elephant"s legs. The sixth, who was tall and got hold of the elephant"s ears,
said it was like a huge fan.
Each man"s idea of the animal came from his own experience. So if someone disagrees with you about a
"simple fact", it"s often because his experience in the matter is different from yours.
To see how hard it is for even one person to make up his mind about a "simple fact", try this simple
experiment. Get three large bowls. Put ice water in one. Put hot water in the second. Put lukewarm water in
the third. Now put your left hand in the ice water. Put your right hand in the hot water. After thirty seconds,
put both hands in the lukewarm water. Your right hand will tell you the water is cold. Your left hand will tell
you it"s hot!
B. The fact that people have different experience in the same simple fact.
C. The fact that people often disagree with one another.
D. The fact that it"s hard to make up one"s mind about simple facts.
B. Above 60℃
C. Around 25℃
D. Below 0℃
B. Galileo"s theory of falling objects
C. Einstein"s theory of relativity
D. Marx"s On Capital
B. people often agree about simple facts
C. it"s hard for a person to make up his mind about a simple fact
D. don"t care too much about simple facts
