A. A dog used to run up quietly to the heels of everyone he met, and to bite them without notice. His
master put a bell about his neck so that the dog might give notice of his presence wherever he went.
Thinking it a mark of distinction, the dog grew proud of his bell and went tinkling it all over the
market-place. One day an old dog said to him, "Why do you make such an exhibition of yourself? That
bell that you carry is not, believe me, any order of merit, but on the contrary a public notice to all men to
avoid you as a bad-mannered dog."
B. A man once stood up at a market-place in the east and said, "I have been ordered by the king to
collect all the well-born and well-bred and bring them before him, since he wishes to reward them."
Everybody that heard him joined him, and he went towards the palace, surrounded by the whole town.
Then he suddenly turned round and said, "The king has just sent me word that he means to help only
those that have been ill-born and ill-bred to make up for their misfortunes." The crowd lingered behind
for a while, and then one after another joined the man as ill-born and ill-bred to receive the king"s gifts.
The man said, "The world goes as the wind blows!"
C. A lion was awakened by a mouse running over his face. Rising up angrily, the lion caught the
mouse and was about to kill him, when the mouse begged, "If you would only spare my life, I would be
sure to repay your kindness." The lion laughed at the idea of the mouse being able to repay a favor, but
let him go in the end. Later, the lion was caught by some hunters, who bound him with strong ropes to
the ground. The mouse, recognizing the lion"s roar, came and gnawed the rope with his teeth and set him
free.
D. A fox had long been the dread of the village poultry yard. One day, he was found lying breathless
in a field. The report went abroad that, after all, he had been caught and killed by someone. In a moment,
everybody in the village came out to see the dead fox. The village cock, with all his hens and chicks, was
also there, to enjoy the sight. The fox then got up and said, "I ate a number of hens and chicks last night.
So I must have slept longer than usual." The cock counted his hens and chicks, and found several chicks
were missing. "Alas!" said he, "how is it that I do not know of it?" "My dear sir," said the fox, as he ran
back to the wood, "it was last night that I had a good meal of your hens and chicks, yet you did not
know of it. A moment ago they found me lying in the field, and you knew of it at once."
E. A boy put his hand into a pitcher (大罐) full of nuts. He grasped as many as he could possibly
hold, but when he tried to pull out his hand, he was prevented from doing so by the neck of the pitcher.
Unwilling to lose his nuts, and yet unable to withdraw his hand, he burst into tears, crying with
disappointment. A person who was passing by said to him, "Be satisfied with half the quantity and you
will draw out your hand at once."
F. A man wished to purchase an ass (a donkey), and decided to give the animal a test before buying
him. He took the ass home and put him in the field with his other asses. The new ass moved away from
the others to join the one that was the laziest and the biggest eater of them all. Seeing this, the man led
him back to his owner. When the owner asked how he could have tested the ass in such a short time,
the man answered, "I didn"t even need to see how he worked. I knew he would be just like the one he
chose to be his friend."
Weight-consciousness
For many years, I was convinced that my suffering was due to my size. I believed that when the weight disappeared, it would take old wounds, hurts, and rejections with it.
Many weight-conscious people also mistakenly believe that changing their body will fix everything.
Perhaps their worst mistake is believing that being thin equals being loved, being special, and being
cherished. We fantasize (幻想) about what it will be like when we reach the long-awaited goal. We work very hard to realize this dream. Then, at last ,we find ourselves there.
But we often gain back what we have lost. Even so, we continue to believe that next time it will be
different. Next time, we will keep it off. Next time, being thin will finally fulfill its promise of everlasting
happiness, self-worth, and of course, love.
It took me a long while to realize that there was something more for me to learn about beauty. Beauty
standards vary with cultures. InSamoa, a woman is not considered attractive unless she weighs morethan
200 pounds. More importantly, if it"s happiness that we want, why not put our energy there rather than on
the size of our body? Why not look inside? Many of us strive (努力 ,奋斗 ) hard to change our body,
but in vain. We have to find a way to live comfortably inside our body and make friends with others and
cherish ourselves. When we change our attitudes toward ourselves, the whole world changes.

make a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January, I had to hold two funerals on
successive days for two elderly women in my community. Both had died " full of years", as the Bible
would say. Their homes happened to be near each other, so I paid condolence(吊唁) calls on the
two families on the same afternoon.
At the first home, the son of the deceased(已故的)woman said to me, " If only I had sent my
mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today. It"s my fault
that she died." At the second home, the son of the other deceased woman said, " If only I hadn"t
insisted on my mother"s going to Florida, she would be alive today.. that long airplane ride, the sudden
change of climate, was more than she could take. It"s my fault that she"s dead."
You see that any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty. Because the course of action
they took turned out bad, they believe that the opposite course-keeping Mother at home, putting off
the operation-would have turned out better. After all, how could it have turned out any worse?
There are seem to be two elements involved in our willingness to feel guilty. The first is our pressing
need to believe that the world makes sense, that there is a cause for every effect and a reason for
everything that happens that leads us to find patterns and connections both where they really exist
and where they exist only in our minds.
The second element is the view that we are the cause of what happens , especially the bad things
that happen. It seems to be a short step from believing that every event has a cause to believe that
every disaster is our fault. The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood.
A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen
in it. He wakes up in the morning and summons the rest of the world to its tasks. He cries, and someone
comes to attend to him. When he is hungry, people feed him , and when he is wet, people change him.
Very often, we do not completely outgrow that childish view that our wishes cause things to happen.

B. the world can be interpreted in different ways
C. there is an explanation for everything in the world
D. we have to be sensible in order to understand the world
B. Every story should have a happy ending.
C. Never feel guilty all the time because not every disaster is our fault.
D. In general, the survivors will feel guilty about the people who passed away
believes in a positive future. Both believe in something that has not yet happened. So I ask you, if
neither the positive nor negative future has happened yet then why not choose to believe in the positive
future?
I believe during these challenging times we have a choice between two roads: the positive road
and the negative road. And our bus can"t be on two roads at the same time. So we have to make a
choice and this choice determines our belief about the future and the attitude and actions we bring
to the present.
I"m not saying we shouldn"t have any fear. There are times when fear is a gift. A healthy dose(剂量)
of fear causes us to examine our situation and plan for the future. It moves us to smell the cheese and
expect change. When used wisely it allows us to manage risk and make better decisions. Some fear
is good.
However, what I have observed lately is a supersized, huge dose of fear that is spreading the
hearts and minds of far too many people. This oversized fear is causing leaders and their organizations
to either act unreasonably or to not act at all. They are either hurrying in a million different directions
because of fear. In both cases, fear is leading them to take the negative road to failure.
The answer is the positive road paved (铺满) with faith and a belief that your best days are not
behind you but ahead of you. With this belief you make the right choices and actions today that will
create your positive future tomorrow. You stay calm, focused and committed to your purpose. You
look for ways to save money and cut costs without making unreasonable fear-based decisions that
sacrifice your future success. You identify opportunities in the midst of the challenges and you focus
on solutions instead of problems.
Your faith and belief in a positive future leads to powerful actions today. The future has not
happened yet and you have a say in what it looks like by the way you think and act. Fear or Faith.
The choice is yours.
B. both Fear and Faith trust something in the future
C. neither negative nor positive future will happen
D. people usually choose to believe in the positive future
B. We should choose the positive road
C. We must choose either a positive or negative road
D. Our belief about the future depends on our choice
B. Reasonable fear helps to plan for future.
C. Fear can bring cheese and risk to people.
D. Leaders usually have oversized fear.
B. be committed to saving money
C. stay away from any challenges
D. take powerful actions today
B. Life is full of fear and faith.
C. We should have faith in a positive future.
D. Wrong decisions sacrifice our future success.
outside my door was burned out and I had 1 finding the keyhole. When I 2 to open the door,
I 3 around the wall for a light switch. I found a plate where a switch was 4 installed... but no
switch!

That evening I discovered in a whole new way just how dark the world 13 be and how necessary
light is! But even more necessary than 14 light is the light that shines from people --the light of 15
and faith. Because, for many people, the world is a dark and 16 place. For someone today just may
be stumbling in discouragement or sadness or fear and in 17 of some light. So let your light shine.
Whatever light you 18 may be a beacon of hope and encouragement. And if you feel that your light is
19 a candle in a forest remember -- there isn"t enough darkness in all the world to 20 the light of
one small candle.
