asked me the question,"Who said life was going to be fair,or that it was even meant to be fair
?" Her question was a good one.It reminded me of something I was taught as a youngster:life
isn"t fair. It"s a disappointment, but it"s absolutely true. One of the mistakes many of us make is
that we feel sorry for ourselves,or for others, thinking that life should be fair,or that someday
it will be.It"s not and it won"t be.
One of the nice things about surrendering (屈从) to the fact that life isn"t fair is that it keeps
us from feeling sorry for ourselves by encouraging us to do the very best we can with what we
have.We know it"s not "life"s job" to make everything perfect:it"s our own challenge.Surrendering
to this fact also keeps us from feeling sorry for others because we are reminded that everyone is
dealt a different hand;everyone has unique strengths and problems in the process of growing up,
facing the reality and making decisions;and everyone has those times that they feel unfairly treated.
The fact that life isn"t fair doesn"t mean we shouldn"t do everything in our power to improve our
own lives or the world as a whole. To the contrary,it suggests that we should. When we don"t recognize
or admit that life isn"t fair,we tend to feel pity for others and for ourselves.Pity,of course,is a selfdefeating
emotion that does nothing for anyone, except to make everyone feel worse than they already do.When
we do recognize that life isn"t fair, however,we feel compassion (热情) for others and for ourselves. And
compassion is a heartfelt emotion that delivers lovingkindness to everyone it touches. The next time you
find yourself thinking about the injustices of the world, try reminding yourself of this very basic fact. You
may be surprised that it can make you out of selfpity and into helpful action.
B.it made him recall something during his childhood
C.like his friend,he also thought life was unfair
D.he learned something from the question as a youngster
B.it"s nice to surrender to life
C.we should not feel sorry for everything
D.we should not surrender to life
B.positive
C.selfpity
D.indifferent
B.A Good Question:Why Life Isn"t Fair
C.Do Our Best to Improve Ourselves
D.Surrender to the Fact That Life Isn"t Fair

likely the answer will be "goals". Goal Setting is extremely important to motivation and success. So what
motivates you? Why are you in college? If you are in college because that"s what your parents want, you
may find it difficult to motivate yourself. Sure, it"s possible to succeed with someone else providing the
motivation for you. ("If you graduate from college, I"ll give you a car!" or worse "If you don"t graduate
from college, you won"t get a car.") But motivation that comes from within really makes the difference.
Certainly, you need some intelligence, knowledge base, study skills, and time management skills, but if
you don"t have motivation, you won"t get far. Think about this analogy. You have a car with a full tank of
gas, a well-tuned engine, good set of tires, quadraphonic CD system, and a sleek, polished exterior(外表). There it sits. This car has incredible potential. (Have you heard that before?) However, until a driver sits
behind the wheel, puts the key in the ignition(点火装置), and cranks it up, the car doesn"t function. You
guessed it; the KEY is MOTIVATION.
Interest is an important motivator for a student. So is a desire to learn. When you link these two things
together, you create success. Often success in an endeavor leads to more interest and a greater desire to
learn, creating an upward spiral(螺旋形) of motivation toward a goal you have established.
So be honest with yourself. Are you genuinely interested in being in college? Have you set realistic
goals for yourself? How can you develop the internal motivation that really counts? When it comes to
motivation, KNOWING is not as important as DOING.
B. Because a good car motivates some college students to study harder.
C. Because a good car is a symbol of being a success.
D. Because motivation leads people to success like it starts a car.
motivation?
B. Internal motivation outweighs external motivation.
C. Internal motivation and external motivation has equal importance.
D. External motivation is enough for people to achieve success.
__________?
B. the desire to learn
C. the knowledge of motivation
D. the sense of success
B. To motivate college students to set goals for their college life.
C. To imply that the less motivated college students quit the college.
D. To call on parents to give up their over-protection of their children.
B. You needn"t attend college if you are really not interested in it.
C. You should work harder to win praise from others.
D. Honesty is the best policy to solve problems in your life.
movies like Revenge(复仇) of the Nerds. They get high grades, all right, but only by becoming dull
laborers, their noses always stuck in a book. They are not good at social communication and look
clumsy when it comes to sports.
How, then, do we account for Domenica Roman or Paul Melendres?
Roman is on the tennis team at Fairmont Senior High School. She also sings in the choral group,
serves on the student council(学生会) and is a member of the mathematics society. For two years she
has maintained A"s in every subject. Melendres, now a freshman at the University of New Mexico, was
student-body president at Valley High School in Albuquerque. He played soccer and basketball well,
exhibited at the science fair, and meanwhile worked as a reporter on a local television station. Being a
speech giver at the graduation ceremony, he achieved straight A"s in his regular classes, plus bonus points
for A"s in two college-level courses.
How do super-achievers like Roman and Melendres do it? Brains aren"t the only answer. "Top
grades don"t always go to the brightest students," declares Herbert Walberg, professor of education at
the University of Illinois at Chicago, who has conducted major studies of super-achieving students.
"Knowing how to make the most of your innate(天赋的) abilities counts for more. Much more."
In fact, Walberg says, students with high I.Q.s sometimes don"t do as well as classmates with lower I.Q.s. For them, learning comes too easily and they never find out how to get down. Hard work isn"t the
whole story, either. "It"s not how long you sit there with the books open," said one of the many A students we interviewed. "It"s what you do while you"re sitting." Indeed, some of these students actually put in
fewer hours of homework time than their lower-scoring classmates.
The kids at the top of the class get there by mastering a few basic techniques that others can readily
learn.
B. successful top students popular with their peers
C. students with certain learning difficulties
D. born leaders crazy about social activities
B. People have unfavorable impression of straight-A students.
C. Everyone knows about straight-A students from TV or films.
D. Straight-A students are well admired by people in the society.
B. they worker longer hours on study
C. they make full use of their abilities
D. they know the short cut to success
B. The role I.Q. plays in learning well.
C. The techniques to be better learners.
D. The achievements top students make.
B. The brightest students can never get top grades.
C. Top students certainly achieve all-around developments.
D. Students with average I.Q.s can become super-achievers.
If untreated this illness could affect everything you do. What is this illness? Depression. Serious
depression requires professional treatment. Self-induced depression is something each of us can change.
Everyone"s circumstances are different, but the causes of self-induced depression are common: low
self-esteem, hurtful thinking and a bad attitude.
So how can we change the way we think, feel, and cultivate a cheerful attitude?
First we must look at ourselves, truly and honestly examining our motives for what we wish to achieve. If you are dissatisfied because you feel you haven"t or can"t do anything, then one step is needed - to set
goals.
Always start your goals relatively small and easy to attain. Think of them as sand; one grain may be
insignificant but as a group they form the beach. Once you have set and attained small goals for yourself,
move on to slightly larger, more challenging goals.
It takes more than just setting goals to be happy. It takes positive thinking. How can we attain this?
There are a number of factors that can make us think negatively and one of those is diet.
In my opinion, a person who eats a lot of take out and fast food is feeding their body junk. Start by
eating better foods which give the body much NEEDED minerals. If your physical body is happy, it"s
much easier for your mental body or "thinking ability" to be happy.
Next, exercise. A half-hour a day is recommended for positive well being. Then think about good
memories you had, or generally think of things that make you smile. Remember, everything you wear
costs money but to wear a smile is free. A smile can be the difference between an average day and a
great day.
If you follow these steps, positive change is inevitable.
B. Depression can all be cured successfully by patients themselves.
C. Those who suffer from depression feel dissatisfied with themselves.
D. Those who suffer from depression live in similar circumstances.
B. we shouldn"t be satisfied with small goals that are insignificant
C. we should avoid challenging goals that may lead to failure
D. people can enjoy happiness only if they set reasonable goals
B. eat healthier foods
C. exercise half an hour a day
D. always wear a smile
B. Take out and fast food cannot provide people with enough minerals.
C. You can only exercise half an hour if you want to get rid of depression.
D. Smile is the cheapest thing compared to other possessions you have.
B. To analyze the danger depression can bring to people.
C. To introduce to readers how to keep positive thinking.
D. To recommend some ways to deal with depression.
million dollar companies. Do you really think these businesses achieved success with a one-time, fix-all
diet plan? No, they count on having most people return on a recurring basis; hence the term "yo-yo
dieting". A lot of diet plans can be very limiting. You are required to follow a certain meal plan, which
may consist of certain foods. Some plans are more exact and restrictive than others. Some diet companies even supply you with the actual meals. This means even more revenue(收入) for these businesses.
A well-balanced diet consists of carbohydrates that are low in sugar (they"re sometimes referred to as "good carbs"), proteins, and fats. (Yes, fats are important, too.) Fortunately for you, a well-balanced diet
is all that is needed to safely and effectively lose or maintain weight, depending upon your goals.
By educating yourself and having the willpower and commitment to make the proper food choices,
you"ll be well on your way toward achieving your weight-loss goals. After all, in order for a diet to be
really successful, it cannot be just a diet. You must develop and conform to(遵守) a lifestyle that revolves around smart food decisions. This doesn"t mean that you can never enjoy certain things that you crave(渴望), at least from time to time. We can all enjoy such things, but moderation is the key. A week"s worth of smart choices deserves a meal out at your favorite restaurant. It also gives you something to look forward
to and enjoy when you are saying "no" to those office donuts all week long.
Don"t get me wrong. It isn"t always going to be easy. But rarely does anything worth having come
easily. Liking what you see in the mirror, and being fit and healthy are definitely worth working hard for.
Anyone can achieve such goals. To break out the old Nike phrase —Just Do It.
B. why so many diet plans can not help people to control weight
C. the diet plans do not work and can only benefit the companies
D. people can"t stick to the diet plans because they are dull
B. a well-balanced diet
C. the willpower and determination
D. a lifestyle considering smart food choices
B. If you can make smart food choices for a week, you can treat yourself to a favourite meal out.
C. A week"s smart food choices itself, not a meal out, is a big reward for you.
D. A week"s proper food at home is as attractive as a delicious meal outside.
B. Eat much after a diet of a long time.
C. Enjoy it once in a while but never too much.
D. Never have it before you successfully lose weight.
B. emphasize the reasons why people should diet
C. predict the results of taking well-balanced food
D. encourage people to take action in spite of difficulties
