The rumors had been spreading for months but it still came as a shock when the hospital would be closing. It had served this poor neighborhood for nearly 100 years but it would close because of the health care crisis. The day after the announcement co-workers found out that pretzels(椒盐饼干) had been eliminated. Soft pretzels are the lifeblood of this city. So losing access to soft pretzels is no small matter. I said, “I only have $6. I’m not sure how many pretzels I need. You see, I work at a hospital and it’s closing and they stopped selling pretzels.” The man’s smile disappeared. “What hospital?” “Oh, Northeastern Hospital.” The guy looked deeply shocked. “I used to sell medical supplies and that was one of my hospitals.” Then he turned around and grabbed a box of 25 pretzels and slid them across the counter. I was surprised by his generosity and started to reach for my wallet, “Oh I can pay. Please let me …” The guy smiled, “Just tell them Joe Sullivan said to do something nice for someone else.” And so that day everyone in medical records was treated to a soft pretzel. Word spread fast as people came asking, “Is it really true?” It was as if I’d carried in a box of gold. It mattered to them that a stranger cared. 小题1:The underlined word “eliminated” in Paragraph 2 means _____. American author Mark Twain once noted that “life would be surely happier if we could only be born at the age of 80 and gradually approach 18.” Twain’s words were only one of many complaints about aging. The ancient Greek poet Homer called old age “hateful”, and William Shakespeare termed it “terrible winter”. Alexander the Great, who conquered most of the known world before he died around 323 B.C., may have been looking for a river that healed the ravages of age. During the 12th century A.D., a king called Prester John ruled a land that had a river of gold and a fountain of youth. But the name linked most closely to the search for a fountain of youth is 16th-century Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon. He thought it would be found in Florida. In St. Augustine, the oldest city in the U.S., there’s a tourist attraction. It is said to be the fountain of youth that Ponce de Leon discovered soon after he arrived in what is now Florida in 1513. However, elderly visitors who drink the spring’s water don’t turn into teenagers. But the tale of the search for a fountain of youth is so appealing(有吸引力的) that it survives anyway, says Ryan K. Smith, a professor of history. “People are more attracted by the story of looking and not finding than they are by the idea that the fountain might be out there somewhere.” Still, a few grains of truth have helped to support the story. Kathleen Deagan, a professor of archaeology, says a graveyard and the remains of a Spanish mission dating back to St. Augustine’s founding in 1565 have been discovered near the so-called fountain of youth. Michelle Reyna, a spokesperson for the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park in St. Augustine, says the fountain has been a tourist attraction since at least 1901 and may have been attracting visitors since 1860. 小题1:According to the passage, who searched for a fountain of youth? A.how the fountain of youth came into being | B.why some famous people hate becoming old | C.how to remain young forever | D.whether the fountain of youth exists | 小题5:Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.The underlined words “the story” refers to Alexander the Great ruling a land that had a river of gold and a fountain of youth. | B.Augustine, which is the oldest city in the U.S, lies in Florida. | C.Some elderly visitors find themselves younger after drinking the water from the fountain of youth. | D.Kathleen Deagan is the spokesperson for the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park. |

It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005. While most people were warming up their ears, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone. The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries (食品杂货) saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live. I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before. People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity (人性) as a whole. And it has influenced (影响) us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting. 小题1:Why was the bike so important to the couple?A.The man’s job was bike racing. | B.It was their only possession. | C.It was a nice Kona 18 speed. | D.They used it for work and daily life | 小题2:We can infer from the text that ________A.The couple worked 60 hours a week | B.people were busy before Christmas | C.the stranger brought over the bike | D.life was hard for the young family | 小题3:How did people get to know the couple’s problem?A.From radio broadcasts. | B.From a newspaper. | C.From TV news. | D.From a stranger. | 小题4:What does the couple learn from their experience?A.Strangers are usually of little help. | B.One should take care of their bike. | C.News reports make people famous. | D.An act of kindness can mean a lot. |

Every person has some unforgettable experiences in his life .Some will remain in his heart as instructive stories to his life. I believe that we often tell ourselves the stories in order to keep our sanity(通情达理). These stories stay inside ourselves. Many of the stories that I have kept inside myself are in the 36 of lessons that have taught me something about life. These lessons are 37 to carry with me. They require no outside 38 to store them in. No one can 39 me of them. They 40 their freshness without having to be renewed. And I can offer them to others without 41 them myself. I remember there is a lesson which is about a little girl who was 42 from a serious disease. Her only chance of 43 was to have a blood transfusion(输血) 44 her five-year-old brother. The doctor asked the little boy 45 he would be willing to give his 46 to his sister. He took a 47 breath and said he would do it if it would save her life. As the transfusion took place, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled as he watched the color 48 to her cheeks. Then his 49 disappeared. He looked up at the doctor and asked in a trembling 50 . “Will I start to 51 right away?” Being so 52 , the lovely little boy had 53 the doctor. He thought he was going to die after he gave blood to his sister. This was my lesson in “ 54 ”. I learned that a candle loses 55 by lighting another candle.

I devote myself to music because of my grandmother. My mom and I lived with grandparents from the time I was two until I was eight. And even then, I was at their house before and after school every day while my mother was at work. Grandma loved music. It was her that first _31 me to Elvis Presley as a very young child, and once I heard his music, I was truly in 32 with it. Most five-year-olds ask for 33 for birthdays, but I wanted Elvis’albums. I would play them non-stop and 34 to the music in my grandma’s family room though my movements didn’t look good. Grandma played the piano and 35 me to sing “America the Beautiful” and “Somewhere over the Rainbow”. I 36 started playing music on the piano, and soon Grandma was paying for me to take piano lessons from a lady living in the 37 . I would come home from __38 and walk three houses down for my lesson. I _39 took about nine months of lessons, but it was enough to give me a(n) 40 and allow me to continue to teach myself. Last month when I came home to visit Grandma in the hospital, I brought along my guitar with me. She was in a lot of pain, but the music seemed to _41 her soul. She had me sing some songs and when I started to sing “Somewhere over the Rainbow”, her weakened voice 42 in with mine for a few lines. That experience was one of the most 43 of my lifetime and one I will certainly cherish forever. I told her of my music career and she was very _44 and said, “That’s wonderful!” I _45 to play for her throughout the week I was home. My grandma passed away two days ago. In my opinion, part of her will live on through every song I write or sing in my life.

We are going on a long train journey. Out of the windows, we can see cars running on nearby highways, children waving at a crossing, cattle grazing(吃草) on a distant hillside, smoke pouring from factories, village houses and city skylines. But 36 in our minds is the final destination(目的地). On a certain day at a certain hour, we will 37 into the station. Bands will be playing and flags 38 . Once we get there, so many wonderful dreams will 39 and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a(n) 40 jigsaw(拼图) puzzle. How restlessly we pace the aisles(过道), damning(诅咒) the minutes for waiting, waiting for the station. “When we reach the 41 , that will be it!” We cry “When I am 18.” “When I 42 a new 450SL Mercedes Benz!” “When I put the 43 kid through college.” “When I have 44 off the debts!” “When I get a promotion(提升).” “When I reach the age of retirement, I shall live 45 ever after!” 46 , we come to realize that there is no such station as we arrive at once and for all. The 47 joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It 48 leaves us behind. “Cherish(珍视) the moment” is a good 49 . It is the burdens(负担) of today that drive us to keep on 50 . And it is the regrets over yesterday that motivate(激发) us to overcome the 51 and look forward to the future. So 52 pacing the aisles and counting the miles. 53 , climb more mountains, eat more ice cream, go barefoot(赤脚) more 54 , swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more and cry less. Life must be lived 55 we go along.
