A high school history teacher once told us, “If you make one close friend in school, you will be most fortunate. A true friend is someone who stays with you for life."_26_ teaches that he was right. Good friendship is just not easily _27_. It is possible that we simply do not stay in one place long enough for_28_friendship to _29_. However, there can be_30_disagreement on the need for each of us to think carefully about the kind of friendship we want. To most of us, friendships are considered very important, but we need to have it clear in our _31_ what kinds of friendship we want. Are they to be close or _32_ at arm"s length? Do we want to _33_ourselves or do we want to walk on the surface? For some people, many friendships on the surface are _34_enough—and that" s all right. But at some point we need to 35 that our expectations are the same as our friends" expectations. The sharing of_36_experience _37_ our tears as well as our dark dreams is the surest way to deepen friendships. But it _38_be undertaken(进行) slowly and carried on only if there are _39_of interest and action in return. What are some of the _40_of friendship? The greatest is the attraction to expect too much too soon. Deep relationships _41_time. Another “major difficulty" is the selfishness to think one “possesses" the other, including his time and attention. Similarly, friendships _42_ actions in return. In 43 words, you must give as much as you take. Finally there is a question of taking care of. Unless you spend _44_time together, talking on the phone, writing letters, doing things together, friendships will die _45_.

As I grew older, my dad and I grew further apart. We always had totally different opinions. He thought that college was a waste of time, but for me it was important to finish college. He wanted me to work my way to the top as he had done in his field, but I wanted a different life. There was a time when we did not talk with each other. A few months ago, I heard that my 84-year-old dad was in poor health. When he called and asked whether I could move from Colorado back to Tennessee to help him, I knew he was seriously ill. I am his only child and so it was time to meet my father’s requirement. Two weeks after moving back, we bought a boat and started fishing again. Fishing was one of the few things that we did while I was young and that we both enjoyed. It is strange but true that as we are fishing we are able to put things that have kept us apart for so many years behind us. We are able to talk about things that we have never talked about before. Fishing has been healing the old wounds that have kept us apart. It is not important how many fish we catch. It is about enjoying the relationship that we have not had for years. I’m 62 and he is 84. When we are on the lake fishing, it is like two kids enjoying life. It is far better to find a way to put the unhappy past behind. I am so lucky to spend the happy time with my father in his last years. Now my heart is filled with love. A smile always graces my lips. 小题1:The author and his father became further apart because . Homeboy Goes to Harvard University On January 11, 2007, as students sat and listened, a very important guest speaker named Richard, spoke to the students in the lecture hall. He not only showed the potential(潜能)within young adults, but encouraged them to work hard at their lessons. Richard was a young child when his mother died and his father walked out. He was forced into many different foster homes(寄养家庭)where he felt unhappy. He did not know that his life was taking a turn for the worst. His uncle, after getting out of prison, got him into drugs and alcohol. His uncle taught him that his place in life was either to be in prison or die trying to be “a man.” His uncle’s teaching almost started affecting him until a very important person came into his life: a teacher. This teacher taught him there is a place in the world for everyone and it isn’t related to drugs. Richard is now a Harvard University graduate and has a great and loving family. Why? He was taught to have respect not only for others, but for himself. After the meeting, it was hoped that the students realized within them there is a potential, and within everyone around them, is knowledge. As Richard reminded them, “Knowledge is power.” 小题1:On January 11, 2007, students listened to a speech made by Richard, who graduated from ________.A.Harvard University | B.a foster school | C.his teacher’s school | D.his uncle’s university | 小题2:Richard encouraged the students ______.A.to love life | B.to be a man | C.to study hard | D.to leave drugs | 小题3:When he was young, Richard lived a(an)_______ life in foster homes.A.rich | B.unhappy | C.relaxing | D.interesting | 小题4:Who played an important role in Richard’s successful life?A.His uncle. | B.His teacher. | C.His friends. | D.His parents. |

About fifty years ago, when television first came out, people thought that radio was no longer useful. Television has both sounds and images(影像). It is much more real and interesting to watch television than to listen to the radio. However, fifty years later radio is still very popular and it will be here for a long time. One reason is that we don’t need to see an image when we listen to the music on the radio. In fact, listening with your eyes closed is the best way to listen to a piece of music. You can imagine yourself on a sandy beach or up high on a mountain. In other words, you can create your own images. Moreover, while listening to the radio, you don’t have to take your eyes off your work. For example, you can listen to the radio and drive at the same time. Or you can read a book and listen to the radio. Television, on the other hand, doesn’t have this advantage. A radio is much smaller than a television. You can take a radio anywhere and turn it on anytime you want. In a quiet place you can use headphones to listen to the news or music on the radio. In this way you won’t disturb anybody. Moreover, a radio is much cheaper than a television. For less than $ 20 you can buy a small radio and have fun with it. 小题1:What is the passage mainly about?A.Music. | B.Radio. | C.Sound. | D.Television. | 小题2:People like to watch TV because _______.A.it has headphones to listen to the news | B.they can drive while watching TV | C.it has both sounds and images | D.they can watch with their ears | 小题3:We learn from the passage that _______.A.people can take a radio anywhere and turn it on anytime | B.television came out 50 years ago and it is useless now | C.a radio is more expensive than a television | D.people can use headphones to read books |

Four years ago, I felt lucky after escaping one of those terrible 2-mile runs. I hated running; it was just something that 1 came easily to me. At that time, if you had told me that I would one day run a marathon, I’ d have told you honestly that I had a better 2 of winning the lottery(彩票). The turning 3 came when I met Mrs. Green. She was fifty years old, going through chemotherapy(化学疗法)for her cancer, and still managed to run 30 miles a week. I thought that if Mrs. Green could run 6 miles at a time, I could run at least two. In February, in cold weather, I started a 2-mile 4 around my neighborhood. Two months later, I 5 the running for the first time. I felt very tired, but I felt happy. Over the next several years, I continued to push each run for a few 6 minutes, slowly building my endurance(耐力). I didn’t need to 7 against other runners, for my most important competitor was myself. After continuing to 8 myself, I knew it was time to step my training up. I 9 I would train for the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon. The race day 10 came, and I was filled with excitement and worry. It was final time to see what I was made of. The 11 ended up surprisingly. I did 12 through the last few miles, but after my running, there was no doubt in my mind that I’d finished. As I 13 the finish line, I experienced the strongest sense of 14 and happiness I had ever had in my life. I am now a marathoner. As John Bingham once said, “The miracle(奇迹)isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the 15 to start.”

I was painfully shy as a child. In high school I would avoid participating in class discussions. I was too afraid to talk to anyone but my closest friends~ I would think about being less shy, wanting the courage not only to ask a girl out, but to speak up in class and say what I was thinking. Yet, it never happened. Fears showed themselves in such self-conscious questions as, " What will other people think? What if she says no?" I felt a dark presence in my mind holding me back. This shyness continued into college. One day, the question occurred to me: Is life shy? The thought surprised me ! Think of the leaves bursting out in the spring time, the bird singing at dawn, the sheer number of different forms of life, all expressing the wideness and scope of divine life. There"s nothing shy about it. Life is everywhere and attention-grabbing (引人注意的). So, if my creator isn"t shy about all the life that needs expressing, I don"t need to be either. I realized that if I wanted to overcome fear and shyness, I would have to put this law of life into practice~ Shyness, fear, and loneliness were hindering me from living my life as life: God wanted me to live it. Therefore, I decided to live how life saw me. One example: I wrote a note to a girl, asking her out on a date. Even as I was writing it, the fears of disaffirmation and unworthiness came to me. This time however, instead of shrinking back and hiding from the fear, I put the note in the campus mail in spite of myself. I thought: whether she says yes or no, it"s still right for me not to be shy. I can live with the confidence sent from the source of my life. The girl saw me in class the next day and told me that she would love to go out with me. I should not have been so surprised! Bit by bit, I was proving that the limited view of myself no longer had control over me. After college, I worked as a newspaper reporter, earned an advanced degree in theater, became a productive writer (a lifelong dream), met a special woman whom I married, and even got a job teaching at a university. 小题1:The writer was shy as a child because of______.A.awareness that life is shy | B.lack of courage to speak out in public | C.fear of others" attitude and reaction | D.failure in his participation in class discussion | 小题2:"The law" in Paragraph 4 refers to the fact that______.A.life is attention-grabbing and divine | B.God treats everything and everyone fairly | C.everything in nature is in the favour of God | D.the creator of life which needs expressing isn"t shy | 小题3:It can be learnt from Paragraph 5 that the writer______.A.didn"t hesitate before sending the note | B.wouldn"t regret sending the note despite the result | C.was not surprised when the girl agreed to go out | D.believed in God and felt encouraged by the wideness of life | 小题4:The underlined word "disaffirmation" in Paragraph 5 probably means______.A.rejection | B.laughter | C.regret | D.horror | 小题5:The purpose of writing the text is to______.A.blame those who are shy and unconfident | B.persuade people to have confidence in their career | C.share the personal experience with the readers | D.prove that the overcome of shyness helps achieve success |
