The World Bank, the United Nations and the London School Of Hygiene and Tropica1 Medicine did a study
to urge hand-washing around the world. They found that one million lives could be saved each year if people
washed their hands with soap often. They said that programs to increase hand-washing with soap could be
among the most effective ways to reduce infectious disease.
Doctors say, many diseases can be prevented from spreading by hand-washing. These include pinworms
(寄生虫),influenza (流行性感冒),the common cold,hepatitis (肝炎) A,meningitis ( 脑膜炎) and infectious
diarrhea.  (腹泻)
Hand--washing destroys germs from other people, animals or objects a person has touched. When people
get bacteria on their hands, they can infect themselves by touching their eyes, nose or mouth. Then these people
can infect other people.
The experts say the easiest way to catch a cold is to touch your nose or eyes after someone nearby has
sneezed or coughed.Another way to become sick is to eat food prepared by someone whose hands were not
clean. The experts say that hand--washing is especially important before and after preparing food, before eating
and after using the toilet. People should wash their hands after handling animals or animal waste, and after
cleaning a baby.
The experts say it is also a good idea to wash your hands after handling money and after sneezing or
coughing. And it is important to wash your hands often when someone in your home is sick. The experts say
the most effective way to wash your hands is to rub them together while using soap and warm water. They say
you do not have to use special antibacterial soap. Be sure to rub all areas of the hands for about ten to fifteen
seconds. The rubbing action helps remove germs. Then rinse (冲洗) the hands with water and dry them.

People who eat at home most of the time have better nutrition than those who go out to eat, a recent study
shows. Cornell University professors Lana Hall and Karen Bunch interviewed 3900 people in the survey."People who eat less than 30 percent of their food away from home eat the most nutritiously," they said.
"In general, Americans don"t have nutrient deficiencies (营养不良), except for iron and calcium," they reported. They have the opposite problem--over-consumption (过度消耗), especially of fat.
The food at many fast food restaurants is often low in vitamins. "People who eat more than 30 percent of
total calories away from home eat foods that are generally low in nutrients per calorie," the professors said. More calories and adequate nutrient intake are required to achieve.
One of the major health risks is eating too much fat. The professor found than fat consumption became greater as income went up. It also went up in houses where the female worked. This is probably because these people eat more highly processed foods.

Within fifteen years Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial
complexes for the recycling of waste. The word rubbish could lose its meaning because everything that goes
into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would
provide energy if nothing else.
The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw
materials go into it what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if
a plant for recycling wastes were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as
steel and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.
Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When
this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: first it will pass through metal bars which will
tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to
separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that grounders and rollers break everything that can
be broken. Finally the rubbish will pass under magnets, which will remove the bits of iron and steel; the rubbish and plastic will then be sorted out in the stage.
The first full-scale giant recycling plants are, perhaps fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of
transporting rubbish to more distant dumps, some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants
before long.
1.  The main purpose of the passage is to _____.
A. show us a future way of recycling wastes
B. tell the importance of recycling plants
C. warn people the danger of some wastes
D. introduce a new recycling plant
2.  How many stages are there in the recycling process?
A. 3
B. 4
C. 5
D. 6
3. What is the main reason for big cities to build their recycling plants?
A. To deal with wastes in a better way.
B. It"s a good way to gain profits.
C. It"s more economical than to dump wastes in some distant places.
D. Energy can be got at a low price.
4. The first full-scale huge recycling plant _____.
A. have been in existence for 15 years
B. take 15 years to build
C. can"t be built until 15 years later
D. will remain functioning for 15 years
5. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. the word"rubbish" will soon disappear from dictionaries.
B. dangerous wastes can be recycled into nothing but energy.
C. To recycle paper and rubber will still be impossible even with the new recycling methods.
D. Big cities will soon have their own recycling plants.

People today are becoming increasingly aware that a proper diet is the foundation of good health. If we
don"t have a regular diet of proper food, we don"t have the fuel to perform at our best. However, some people
think not eating breakfast doesn"t matter a lot, though eating it is important. Get the truth behind this common
wrong idea and other meal frequency and timing meals. Change Text Size Bookmark Yahoo! Buzz Del.icio.us
Digg Reddit Facebook StumbleUpon TwitThis javascript:void (0); Will eating breakfast every day help me lose
weight?
Yes, eating the morning meal can actually help you lose pounds. People who have breakfast are less likely
to eat diet-busting (破坏的) junk food and are more likely to exercise later in the day, as studies show. People
who skip breakfast, on the other hand, usually make up the calories before day"s end. Researchers found that
78 percent of the men and women included in the National Weight Control Registry - who have maintained an
average weight loss of 66 pounds for more than 5 years - eat breakfast every day. Is"grazing" really healthier
than eating three square meals a day?
No. Eating many small meals throughout the day is probably not better for you than three main meals, the
traditional amounts of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The idea that "grazing" is healthier comes from a
few old studies showing that eating frequent meals throughout the day may burn more fat and lower insulin
(胰岛素)levels. But later studies have found no benefit to grazing. It"s not healthier than eating three squares,
according to the American Dietetic Association. I"ve always eaten most of my calories at dinner. If I"m healthy,
is there any reason for us not to keep doing this?
Hard to say. Instinctively, it sounds like a bad idea. Yet"one-mealers" tend to eat less food totally, scientists
say, so your dining habit may actually help you stay tidy and attractive. On the other hand, one small, brief
study by USDA scientists found that eating just one daily meal may cause small increases in blood pressure,
blood sugar, and cholesterol (胆固醇). If your annual blood tests show a rise in any key risk factors for heart
disease or diabetes, it is high time for you to reconsider your meal strategy. Will bedtime snacks make you fat?
No. But that"s not permission for you to eat cookies before going to bed every night. Consuming more
calories than you burn through physical activity produces big loose stomachs and weak legs no matter what
time you overeat. A habit of snacking in front of the television every evening will lead to weight gain, but no
more so than having a six-egg pancake for breakfast or conquering a bag of beans with sweet food at your
desk every afternoon. The final word Eat fewer calories than you need in a day and you will lose weight.
Eat breakfast because it will help you control calories better, not because it"s a magic meal. Eat the number
of meals that keeps you satisfied and energized. No one plan is best for everyone

Dear Editor (编辑),
I used to be a doctor in a children"s hospital. Sometimes I treated children who had been poisoned (中毒)
by medicines for older family members. The children didn"t know the medicine was dangerous; they just knew
it tasted sweet. Children easily opened the bottle that we now use in China.
Some days ago I talked about medicine with an American. He showed me a kind of plastic bottle. The
design was very quite simple and I"m sure our Chinese factories could produce these bottles. The top of the
bottle locks but can be opened by pressing down on it while turning. This is difficult for most young children
to do, though grown-ups can open these bottles very easily.
I"m certain that the price of making such tops would be very low. As a doctor, I"d love to see this done.
And most parents would be grateful.
