stop at the grocery for a case of diet soda. On our way to lunch she asked me "Do you think that drinking diet soda makes you fat?"
"Depends on whom you ask," I said. Last year, researchers from the University of Texas Health
Science Center in San Antonio reported that adults who drink diet soda did not lose weight. They were
actually more likely to become overweight than those adults who did not drink soda at all or those that
drink regular soda. In fact, the more diet soda consumed, the more likely someone would become
overweight. To be specific, there was a 41% increase in the risk of being overweight for every can or
bottle of diet soda consumed daily.
In this study, researcher Sharon Fowler followed over 600 normal weight adults ages 25-64 over a
seven to eight year period of time. She has a number of theories as to why weight gain may be a result of
drinking a zero-calorie beverage:
1.Artificial sweeteners may affect your body’s ability to judge how many calories you consume. When no calories are consumed, the body may continue to crave(渴望) what it expected and could lead to
overeating.
2. Some people give up regular sodas to justify their favorite dessert and still take in too many calories. A regular soda contains about 150 calories while your dessert may be double that in calories easily.
3. For others who were gaining weight already, switching to diet soda wasn’t enough to stop the gain.
Since her first piece of research, Fowler has tracked another 2000 people with similar results. Do the
faux sweet products induce people to want more sweets? Fowler suggests that perhaps it’s not the soft
drinks themselves that cause weight gain but that there is some link between diet soda drinking and
overweight.
B. Some want excuses to have dessert.
C. Some mistake diet soda as no-calorie drink.
D. Diet soda can help people lose weight.
B. Diet soda increases the risk of becoming overweight.
C. Diet soda actually contains more calories than regular soda.
D. Those who drink diet soda are 41% more likely to become fat.
B. People also have foods containing more calories when they choose diet soda.
C.Diet soda has little effect on those who have become overweight already.
D.Diet soda is a sweetener that increases the body’s needs for calories.
B. The research lasted many years and over 2000 people took part in it.
C. Diet soda has opposite effect on those who take it to lose weight.
D. Sharon Fowler is the first to find drinking diet soda leads to overweight.

A few cups of green tea each day may help prevent heart disease,Greek researchers said
on Wednesday.A study published in the European Journal of Cardiovascular (心血管的)
Prevention showed further evidence of the potential health benefits from tea already linked
to a reduced risk of a range of cancers and other conditions.
The study showed that green tea improves blood flow and the ability of arteries (动脉)
to relax, said Charalambos Vlachopoulos,an expert at the Athens Medical School in Greece
who worked on the study.
Other studies have shown that black tea also has benefits for cardiovascular health.
The Greek team said they believed green tea might be even better because it had higher
quantities of beneficial substances called flavonoids (类黄酮)-some of which are lost in the
oxidation (氧化) process that black tea undergoes.
Flavonoids are also found in cocoa, tomatoes and grapes."A couple of cups a day would
probably be good for people," Vlachopoulos said."This is the first study to show these
effects for green tea."
The researchers gave 14 healthy volunteers either green tea, coffee or hot water and then
measured the function of endothelial cells (内皮细胞).These cells help relax arteries and
ease blood flow."What is important is these effects are evident within 30 minutes,"
Vlachopoulos said.
The measurements taken 30,90 and 120 minutes following consumption showed an
almost immediate benefit among people who had drunk green tea,he said. While the researchers
looked only at a short-term effect,Vlachopoulos said the team"s studies suggest the protection
is long-lasting.
"Green tea is consumed less in the Western world than black tea,but it could be more
beneficial,"he said.

Many of the 12,000-plus summer camps in the United States are making greater efforts
to guard against the spread of the new A/H1N1 flu.
Many parents are debating whether they should stop their kids from enjoying the summer
camp because of the new flu.Jing Zhang of New York said she decided to keep her
5-year-old daughter at a local day-care center."Why would I want to spend a fortune on
the summer camp when the risk is the same?" she asked.
Dr.Daniel Rauch, said the risk of catching A/H1N1 flu is only greater in close or group
settings, for instance, when kids sleep near each other in beds, tents or cabins.Unless children
already have potential illness or immunodeficiencies (免疫缺陷),going to summer camps
does not necessarily have a greater risk of catching A/H1N1 flu than going to public spaces
such as playgrounds and shopping centers,he added.
Some camp administrators said they would send any sick child home immediately or
separate them in a clinic and let them play board games while they are being observed.
"We try to create a temporary camping center in the summer and we are very vigilant
about it," said Andy Pritikin, director of Liberty Lake Day Camp in Mansfield, who sent a
child with fever home last week, with full credit to come back later in the summer.
"Parents should know whether camp nurses are available. And if there"s only a bottle
of medicine and a bed in the back room, and it takes three and a half hours to get to the
nearest hospital, parents need to know that," said Sean Nienow, director of the National
Camp Association.

Nowadays, most of us live a busy life. What do you do to keep yourself relaxed?
Besides spending time with family, having a glass of wine with friends or reading a book,
how about a hobby?
Personally, I"m a collector. I like blue and white pieces the best---blue and white
anything﹗Plates, jars, vases, cups, bowls---I love them all. Collecting items is like
something you can"t get enough of. You get one, and you want to have more.
I find collecting to be a fun and inspirational hobby. In many ways, it"s like a puzzle
I"m never tired of solving. I look high and low for new pieces to add to my collection. I
can often be found visiting Marshell"s, looking over their inexpensive offerings. In fact, I
found one of my favorite pieces there.
I"ve mixed inexpensive pieces from Marshell"s with more expensive finds. A lot of times,
it"s the piece I"m not looking for that falls into my lap; I find a way to make it part of my
blue and white family. What I love about my collection is that when I get inspired, I can
move them around the house, mix and match and make things look fresh and new.
Ever since I was a little girl, blue has been my favorite color. I think I got it from my
aunt in Mexico. Some of my earliest memories are visiting her in Mexico and sitting on a
chair in her kitchen, which had blue and white tiles(瓷砖)from the floor to the ceiling. I
would spend countless hours admiring all the beautiful blue and white plates and shiny blue
tiles around her kitchen. Once I had a home, I began to build my own blue and white
collection.

own. So it needs proper treatment(对待) and proper nourishment(营养).
The old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is not silly as some people think. The body needs fruit and vegetables because they contain vitamin C (维生素C). Many people take extra(额外的) vitamins in the form of pills(药丸), believing that these will make them healthy. But a good diet is made up of nourishing food and this gives all the vitamins you need. The body doesn’t need or use extra vitamins. So why waste money on them?
In the modern western world many people are too busy to care about eating properly. They throw anything into their stomachs, eating hurriedly and carelessly. The list of illness caused or made worse by bad eating habits is frightening.
B. apple can take the place of doctors.
C. eating apples regularly (有规律的) does lots of good to our health.
D. an apple is a sure cure for illness.
B. often eating apples is a good habit.

more waste will have to take it to the tip (垃圾站) or buy a limited number of extra bags.
Doretta Cocks, protester of the Campaign for Weekly Waste Collections, said, "They must
think we are fools. How can they claim to be concerned for the environment when they tell people
to drive to the local tip? And what do you do if you don"t have a car? Walk?"
The plan ignores the voice from ministers to end such heavy-handedness (笨拙).
It is to be carried out by the Tory-led council (市政厅) in Wokingham, Berkshire, and is
already in operation in Brozbourne in Hertfordshire.
Many of the 180 councils that still offer unlimited weekly rubbish collections are watching the
trial.
Wokingham officials have told residents that 75-litre bags will be given to each household and
anything not left in them will not be collected.
"Every household will receive 80 bags every year," it said. "You can buy extra bags in rolls of
ten but this will not be encouraged."
Families of five will get 100 rubbish bags a year and households of six or more will get 120.
Residents will have a weekly recycling collection limited to cans, paper and cards, plastic bottles
and so on.
Plastic packaging and glass including bottles must either go with the general waste or be taken to
recycling points. Green waste pick-ups cost an extra £60 a year.
The council has told residents it will save £922,000 a year under the new system. There will be
no local consultation (商讨) before it is introduced next April.
