health problems linked to being overweight.
The WHO says a major reason for the rising obesity rates is an increase in imported foods. It says
many Pacific islanders have replaced their traditional diets of vegetables and fruits with imported
processed foods.
Dr. Temu Waqanivalu is with the World Health Organization"s South Pacific office in Suva, Fiji. He
says many of the imported products lack nutritional value.
Temu Waqanivalu said: "In some of the places, you"d be amazed to see how a bottle of Coke is
cheaper than a bottle of water. I think that represents the kind of offenvironment we"ve created that
doesn"t really encourage or make lifestyle choices an easy choice for the population."
And a lack of physical activity among many Pacific islanders only adds to the obesity problem.
The WHO says more than 50 percent of the population is overweight in at least ten Pacific island
countries. The rate is as high as 80 percent among women in the territory of American Samoa.Fiji had
the lowest obesity rate at 30 percent.
In all, almost ten million people live in Pacific island countries. The WHO estimates that about 40
percent of them have health disorders related to diet and nutrition.
Diabetes rates are among the highest in the world. Fortyseven percent of the people in American
Samoa have diabetes. So do 44 percent of the people in Tokelau, a territory of New Zealand.
By comparison, the diabetes rate is 13 percent in the United States, a country that has its own
problems with rising obesity.
Officials also note an increase in nutritional problems like anemia and not enough vitamin A in the
diets of Pacific islanders. Dr.Waqanivalu says treating conditions related to obesity and diet puts
pressure on limited health resources and budgets.

In the Redwood City, Calif, a boy started a group called the Red Dragon Conservation Team four
years ago to do just that. So far, the team’s members have raised $4,500. That"s enough to purchase
and protect more than 16 acres of rainforest in Costa Rica through the Center for Ecosystem Survival.
Every year, thousands of square miles of rainforest are destroyed worldwide.Logging (伐木) and farming
are mostly likely to blame, scientists say. The loss is terrible news for animals and people. Even though
rainforests cover less than 2 percent of the earth, they are home to half the world"s plants and animals.
Rainforests also provide water and help control the earth’s climate.
Evan"s work to save the rainforests recently earned him a Barron prize for Young Heroes. The prizes
are given to children or teenagers who have made a positive difference in the world.Evan"s goal is "to save enough rainforests to last forever". He won"t have to do it alone. His actions have already inspired other
kids to chip_in. One girl asked for donations instead of presents on her birthday. She raised $850. Other
kids are starting their own conservation teams.
Evan says every one can help the planet-even by taking small steps such as recycling. He and his
family try to make a difference every day. "We recycle, we try to limit our garbage...we"ve been walking a
little more, and we buy local food," Evan said.

ways to protect the earth"s wildlife and conserve the natural world they inhabit (居住) is now more important than ever.
Dodo
The Dodo is a classic example of how human caused damage to the earth"s biology. The flightless
Dodo was native to the Island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It lived off fruit fallen from the island"s
trees and lived unthreatened until humans arrived in 1505. The easily controlled bird became a source of
food for sailors and was attacked by animals introduced to the island by humans such as pigs, monkeys
and rats. The population of Dodos rapidly decreased and the last one was killed in 1681.
Rhinos
The Rhino (犀牛) horn is a highly prized item for Asian medicine. This has led to the animal being
hunted in its natural habitat.Once widespread in Africa and Eurasia, most Rhinos now live in protected
natural parks and reserves (保护区). Their numbers have rapidly decreased in the last 50 years, and the
animals remain under constant threat from poachers(偷猎者).
The Giant Panda
The future of the World Wildlife Fund"s symbolis far from certain. As few as 1,000 remain in the wild.
The Chinese government has set up 33 panda reserves to protect these beautiful animals and made
poaching them punishable with 20 years in prison. However, the panda"s distinct black and white
patched coat fetches a high price on the black market and determined poachers still pose (造成) one of
the most serious threats to the animals continued existence.
Whales
The International Whaling Commission is fighting to ensure the survival of the whale species. Despite
the fact that one-third the world"s oceans have been declared whale sanctuaries (保护区),7 out of 13
whale species remain endangered. Hunted for their rich supply of oil, their numbers have decreased to
just 300. Collisions with ships, poisonous pollution and being caught in fishing nets are other major causes of whale deaths.
Tigers
The last 100 years has seen a 95% reduction in the numbers of remaining tigers to between 5,000 and 7,000 and the Bali, Javan, and Caspian tigers are already extinct. The South China tiger is precariously
close to disappearing, with only 20 to 30 still alive. Like the Rhino horn, tigers" bones and organs are
sought after for traditional Chinese medicines. These items are traded illegally along with tiger skins.

Not all cases of Alzheimer"s disease look like this ,but Alzheimer"s is a serious disease that is said
to be the fourth or fifth leading cause of death for people over age 75.
It is said that about three percent of the U.S. population over age 65 have Alzheimer"s .In the
early stages ,people may exhibit short term memory loss. Some may experience changes in personality ,
easy to be angry .As the disease progresses ,patients might lose the ability to move and may be unable
to speak or move at all. This progressive disease generally lasts 8 to 10 years before death occurs.
While no one is certain what causes these changes in the brain"s nerve fibers (神经纤维),their effect
is certain .Alzheimer"s destroys not only the patients ,but also spouses(配偶),friends and families.
What should you do if you notice progressive memory loss in yourself or a loved one? Have the
person examined by a doctor who is a specialist in the treatment of Alzheimer"s disease.
Though many reasons other than Alzheimer"s disease may cause memory loss ,its early diagnosis(诊
断)and treatment may delay some of the most serious effects.
What feeling will you likely experience should a loved one suffer from Alzheimer" s disease? A person will often go through the various stages of sadness, shock, anger, and so on. If the spouse develops the
disease, you may experience hurt and disappointment when he or she doesn"t remember you are married.
Life for the Alzheimer"s patients and their loved ones will never be the same as the disease progresses ,bringing a deep sorrow ,loss and even anger towards God .No matter what feelings are present ,facing
them honestly will serve one better than burying them.

an apple or a piece of chocolate you know that these are things you can eat. You can also
use other senses when you choose your food. You may like it because it smells good or
because it tastes good. You may dislike some types of food because they do not look,
smell or taste very nice. Different animals use different senses to find and choose their food.
A few animals depend on only one of their senses, while most animals use more than one
sense.
Although there are many different types of food, some animals spend their lives eating
only one type. The giant panda eats only one particular type of bamboo(竹子). Other animals
eat only one type of food even when given the choice. A kind of white butterfly will stay on
the leaves of a cabbage, even though there are plenty of other vegetables in the garden.
However, most animals have a more varied diet(多样化饮食). The bear eats fruits and
fish. The fox eats small animals, birds and fruits. The diet of these animals will be different
depending on the season.
Humans have a very varied diet. We often eat food because we like it and not because
it is good for us. In countries such as France and Britain, people eat foods with too much
sugar. This makes them overweight, which is bad for their health. Eating too much red meat
and animal products, such as butter, can also be bad for the health. Choosing the right food,
therefore, has become an area of study in modern life.
B.are not satisfied with their food
C. choose food in similar ways
D. eat entirely different food
B. The small bird.
C. The bear.
D. The fox.
B. the food color changes
C. they move to different places
D. they are attracted by different smells
B. French and British food is good
C. some people have few choices of food
D. some people care little about healthy diet
to take risks, especially (尤其)when the risk is to achieve a desired result. In that way, we
become stronger and braver.
Our human nature should be to take risks, but some people just sit and wish they didn"t
have the fear(恐惧)to move on. This is because of one or two failures in their lives. Please
step out and don"t let the past hold you back from living life to the fullest. Move forward
and move on!
In studying the psychology of taking risks, we find that human nature provides(提供)
us with the desire (渴望)to experiment and take chances.
Risk taking is a great benefit(好处)that allowed our ancestors(祖先) to become
stronger and stronger day by day. By taking risks they fought off enemies and discovered
new territories(领土). This attitude has become a part of our modern culture. Riding a
roller coaster is a common risk taking activity that even the average person seems to enjoy
although they have the understanding that it is dangerous. This psychological and
biological (生物学上的) connection (联系)creates an interesting connection between
what is unsafe and what humans enjoy.
Getting in a car each day is a risk. Getting out of bed is a risk. There is such thing as
perfect safety. We need to take risks so that we can complete (finish) many things.
Astronauts take risks when they get inside a rocket; however, the things they achieve are
great. Businessmen take a risk when they buy parts of a company. However, without
doing that, they could not make more money.
We need to take risks so that we can gain something. It is impossible to move forward
in life, earn money, enjoy a relationship, play a sport, or do anything else without taking a
risk. It is all part of the game. It"s one of the most important parts of life.
B. they feel pleased with the present life.
C. they have experienced some failures before
D. they show little interest in the strange world outside
B. Fighting off enemies
C. Discovering new territories
D. Becoming stronger and stronger
B. The safest place has the greatest risk
C. People should take risks when they are young
D. We can always achieve our goals by taking risks
B. On risks taken by ancestors
C. Live our life to the fullest(充分地)
D. No risk, no gain.
