people they often run into. This often takes the form of a simple greeting like "How"s it going?" or "What"s up?"
This is simply a way of saying I see you and I recognize you.
Americans also show this friendliness in "small talk". Small talk is a casual conversation that Americans
engage in when they meet on the street, in the shop or in the office before a meeting. Usually the topics of
such small talk will be something that everyone is familiar with, the weather, sports, traffic, hobbies or what"s
on television. The topic of the conversation is not as important as the effort make to spend a few minutes with
the other person. Small talk shows that you are a considerate person who is interested in others and who is
willing to take the time to get to know people.
Small talk is used in the business world to create a friendly atmosphere and to put everyone at ease before
the serious matters of business are discussed. Often businessmen will spend a few minutes talking about the
weather or sports before a meeting. This form of small talk only lasts a few minutes before the American
businessman wants to "get down to business."
Asians are very skilled at making casual conversation. However, they often find it difficult to make small

of ourselves. 1_____.
But stop biting your finger-nails. Public speaking is easy. It"s just plain talking, and you talk all the time.
Although I"m basically shy (honest!). I"ve been making speeches and talking on radio and television for more
than 30 years. And I can tell you that public speaking is not a "gift" like musical talent, so 2_____. Here are
some of the lessons I have learned:
Your audience is going to go away with one or two of your main ideas. One or two. Not ten or twenty.
3_____. And if you don"t have a clear idea of what you want to say, there"s no way your audience will.
4_____-how you are going to open, what major points you want to make and how you"re going to close.
When I do a radio or TV piece, I often write the last sentence first. 5_____. A strong close is critical; the
last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember.
The standard length of a audio-visual act is usually 12 minutes. If all those performers singing and dancing
their hearts out couldn"t go on longer without boring the audience, what makes you think you can?

Indeed, for many of the poorest regions (地区) of the world, it remains the next big thing-finally becomes
globally available. And that is a good thing, because the TV revolution is changing lives for the better.
Across the developing world, around 45% of families had a TV in 1995; by 2005 the number had climbed
above 60%. That is some way behind the U.S., where are more TVs than people, and where people now easily
get access to the Internet. Five million more families in sub-Saharan Africa will get a TV over the next five
years. In 2005, after the fall of the Taliban (塔利班), which had outlawed TV, 1 in 5 Afghans had one. The
global total is another 150 million by 2013-pushing the numbers to well beyond two thirds of families.
Television"s most powerful effect will be on the lives of women. In India, researchers Robert Jensen and
Emily Oster found that when TVs reached villages, women were more likely to go to the market without their
husbands" approval and less likely to want a boy rather than a girl. They were more likely to make decisions
over child health care. TV is also a powerful medium for adult education. In the Indian state of Gujarat,
Chitrageet is a popular show that plays Bollywood songs with words in Gujarati on the screen. Within six
months, viewers had made a small but significant (有意义的) improvement in their reading skills.
Too much TV has been associated with violence, overweight and loneliness. However, TV is having a

Love, success, happiness, family and freedom-how important are these values to you? Here is one interview which explores the fundamental questions in life. Question: Could you introduce yourself first? Answer: My name is Misbah, 27 years old. I was born in a war-torn area. Right now I"m a web designer. Q: What are your great memories? A: My parents used to take us to hunt birds, climb trees, and play in the fields. For me it was like a holiday because we were going to have fun all day long. Those are my great memories. Q: Does your childhood mean a lot to you? A: Yes. As life was very hard, I used to work to help bring money in for the family. I spent my childhood working, with responsibilities beyond my age. However, it taught me to deal with problems all alone. I learnt to be independent. Q: What changes would you like to make in your life? A: If I could change something in my life, I"d change it so that my childhood could have taken place in another area. I would have loved to live with my family in freedom. Who cares whether we have much money, or whether we have a beautiful house? It doesn"t matter as long as I can live with my family and we are safe. Q: How do you get along with your parents? A: My parents supported me until I came of age. I want to give back what I"ve got. That"s our way. But I am working in another city. My only contact with my parents now is through the phone, but I hate using it. It filters (过滤) out your emotion and leaves your voice only. My deepest feelings should be passed through sight, hearing and touch. | |||
