yesterday. It"s also common for them to go on what experts call food jags-that is, they want to eat the same
few foods over and over again at every meal, while turning up their noses at anything new. "It"s a fear of new
things," says Nancy, Hudson, a researcher in University of California, Berkeley. "We think it"s one of those
quirks (怪癖) that humans probably developed to protect themselves as mankind came into this world. You
don"t try new things because you don"t know if they"re safe." Children like familiar things, whether they"re their
beds or their aftemoon tea,so most kids won"t try new foods until they"ve been shown to them many times.
Picky (挑剔的) eating can also be a child"s way of showing his independence. This is why forcing a child
to eat often makes things worse. Finally, it may seem like your child cannot sit still long enough to eat very
much at one sitting because of his short attention. But children are generally good at getting what they need,
even if it doesn"t seem like much to you. In any case, you can try to keep your child at the table longer by
making mealtime as calm and regular as possible, without too many distractions (分心的事物) like toys, TV,
or pets.
B. Two.
C. Four.
D. One.
B. Disliking.
C. Putting their noses on.
D. Fearing.
B. Toys are not good for children.
C. It seems that children like eating more when they have something they like in their hands.
D. Make it a rule to let your child eat at the table when meal- time comes.
B. not giving them any food until they"re very hungry
C. letting them become familiar with the new foods
D. explaining to them how useful the new foods are

I have been reading your newspaper, the Hometown Gazette, for the past two years, ever since I moved to
Smithville. We moved here from New York City, so I am accustomed to reading excellent newspapers such as
The New York Times. In fact, we still have the Times delivered on Sundays. The entire family enjoys reading
the recipes in the paper, as well as the Styles section.
The Times is great, but _____. I"ve never read an article that doesn"t contain at least three or four spelling
or grammatical errors. For instance, in last week"s issue, you misspelled the word "secretary", used a singular
verb with a plural noun, and used "it"s" as a possessive. And that was just in the lead story! In case you never
went to elementary school, "it"s" means"it is". It"s not a possessive adjective!
It"s a pity that this tiny little hick (土气的) town has only one newspaper, because I"d like to have an
alternative to the rag you publish. I find it hard to believe your news stories. If you can"t spell correctly, how
can you get your facts right?
I"ve been meaning to get this off my chest for some time. Please cancel my subscription. And buy yourself
a dictionary.
Sincerely,
Jane Z. Jones

hard to please their owners. One of my favorite stories is about a dog who wanted his owner to please him.
One of my friends has a large German shepherd (牧羊犬) named Jack. Every Sunday afternoon, my
friend takes Jack for a walk in the park. Jack likes these long walks very much.
One Sunday afternoon, a young man came to visit my friend. He stayed a long time, and he talked and
talked. Soon it was time for my friend to take Jack for his walk, but the visitor didn"t leave. Jack became
very worried about his walk in the park. He walked around the room several times and then sat down directly
in front of the visitor and looked at him. But the visitor paid no attention. He continued talking. Finally, Jack
couldn"t stand it any longer. He went out of the room and came back a few minutes later. He sat down again
in front of the visitor, but this time he held the man"s hat in his mouth.
German shepherds aren"t the only intelligent dogs. Another intelligent dog is a Seeing Eye dog. This is a
special dog which helps blind people walk along the streets and do many other things. We call these dogs
Seeing Eye dogs because they are the "eye" of the blind people and they help them to "see". Seeing Eye dogs
generally go to special schools for several years to leam to help blind people.

them creates an impression. It"s important to do so in a proper way, no matter whether you are introducing
yourself to someone, or introducing two people to each other. To keep you aware of this, we have gathered
tips on how to make a proper introduction.
★ Always stand when making an introduction.
When you are seated and someone comes up to greet you, make the effort to stand up. By doing this, you
show respect for yourself and for the other person.
★ Always maintain eye contact while making an introduction.
Many people are not aware of the value of this simple action. When you make eye contact you are giving
a confident image.
★ Always introduce a person of lesser authority to one of greater authority. The most important thing to
rememher is to say the most important person"s name first.
★ In a situation where rank is unimportant, _____. A man is presented to a woman and a younger woman
to an older woman.
What if you find yourself in a situation where you have forgotten the other person"s name? Start with a
handshake and reintroduce yourself. By doing this, you will usually cause the other person to do the same.
However, if the other person does not take your suggestion, it is OK simply to apologize and let the person
know that you cannot remember her or his name. This is not the ideal situation, of course, but it does happen
to all of us. The other person should he forgiving.

Just turn something we already enjoy into our career. Whether you"re into painting or building furniture, you
know you feel proud of the result of your efforts.
However, you should first explore the concept and do your market research and other planning. Don"t
forget to consider what your day-to-day work life would look like.
There is one very positive aspect of doing a business plan _____. You may be highly motivated to do some
planning and research, since this relates to an activity you know well and enjoy, and you therefore may be more
likely to do the necessary planning. This is a big plus! And once you see how to do this research, you may be
more likely to do it for other ideas you will come up with.
Something I"ve learned over the years is that creating a business out of the first few ideas you come up with
isn"t a good goal. If you are brainstorming ideas for your new career path, I suggest you list lots of ideas and
choose one or two that have the most potential to explore, as well as those that really draw you in.
The evolution of your ideas is the best reason to explore those first ideas. The best careers come from
exploring the first ideas and finding out what will, and what won"t, work for you. Make sure the business plan
you are creating based on your hobby should be one that you will enjoy and that will add to your quality of life.
Then start with your hobby, and enjoy the adventure of finding out where you will end up!

students in the United States often spend many hours as volunteers in a hospital, orphanage (孤儿院) or
home for the aged.
They read books to the people who must be in these places or they just visit them and play games or
listen to their problems. Other young people volunteer to collect food or money, or they work in the homes
of people who are sick or old. They paint, clean or repair their houses, do their shopping or mow their
lawns. There is a group of volunteers to meet almost every need. For boys who no longer have fathers
there is an organization called Big Brothers. College students and other men take these boys to baseball
games or on fishing trips and help them to know about things that boys usually learn from their fathers.
Every city has a number of clubs where boys and girls can play games or leam to make crafts. Some of
these clubs have movies or organize short tnps to the mountains, the beaches, museums or other places
of interest. Most of these clubs use many high school and college students as volunteers because they
still remember the problems of younger boys and girls. Volunteers believe that some of the happiest people
in the world are those _____.
