举一反三
My reply is often a brief "You have as much time as the president." I usually carry on a bit about there
being twenty-four hours in the day for everyone, and suggest that"not enough time" is not an acceptable
explanation of not getting something done.
Once in graduate school, I tried to prove to one of my professors by saying that I was working hard.
His answer to me was, "That"s irrelevant (无关的). What"s important is the quality of your work." Since
then I have had time to think carefully about the "hard worker" dodge (诀窍), and I have come to some
conclusions-all relevant to the problem of how much time we have.
If you analyze the matter, you can identify two parts of the problem: There is, of course, the matter
of"time", which we can think of as fixed. Then there is the problem of "work" during that time. But, as
my professor suggested, it"s not how hard one works but the quality of the product that"s important.
That led me to a new idea: the quality of the work. That concept is perhaps best explained by a sign I
once saw on the wall in someone"s office:"Don"t work harder. Work smarter." There is a lot of sense in
that idea.
If you can"t get more time, and few of us can, the only solution is to improve the quality of the work.
That means thinking of ways to get more out of the same time than we might otherwise get. That should
lead us to an analysis of our work habits. Since "work" for students usually means "homework", the
expression"work habits" should be read as "study habits".
Then, as a smart student, you will seek to improve those skills that you use in study, chiefly reading and
writing. If you learn to read better and write better, there are big benefits that pay off in all your studies.
B. an educator
C. a novelist
D. an engineer
B. can meet the president
C. get everything done well
D. should accept the explanation
B. The author tried to tell the professor that he/she (author) had done a good job.
C. You can"t improve the quality of the work if you can"t get more time.
D. You"ll try to improve your skills in reading and writing if you"re a clever student.
B. Don"t work harder; work smarter.
C. No one can get more time.
D. Read better and write better.
early, and saving is a skill that everyone needs. Many people-adults included-do not have a good sense of
saving for the long run.
I have been lucky to learn this lesson early because I have had a grass-cutting business since I was 10
years old. Of the money I make, I spend about 10 percent and save the other 90.
Making sure you save and don"t spend too much is a good way to build up wealth. I have put my
earnings in a bank. Many teens I know spend all the money they earn, so it never has a chance to grow.
Young people should realize that their teenage years are a great time to begin saving.
At high school, many parents pay for almost everything, so your expenses can be small. If you have a
job, you should have fun with some of the money. But you should also save some so that it will grow. Then
you can begin planning for your future. When you spend money, you not only lose that money, but also lose
the interest you should have earned by saving it.
After high school, college is expensive and then "real" life begins, with expenses such as food and rent. If
you can hold onto a good percentage of the money you earn as a teen, going to college and buying a house
will be much easier. The earlier you begin saving, the more time the money has to grow. If you are in your
thirties without any savings, you will always have to struggle, The earlier you begin saving, the easier it is to
create a nest egg (储备金).
B. saving money when he grows up
C. buying a house
D. saving money and spending less
B. if you have a job, you needn"t save money
C. when spending one loses more than the money he pays
D. going to college will be easier if you borrow money from the bank
B. Learning to spend less
C. How to save money
D. How to make money
are beautiful beaches, adventure parks, nature parks and so much more.
There are so many sights to see here. It is a pity to drive in a car and you"ll miss a great part of it.
Australia is home to many animals and birds that can only be seen when moving slowly and going into the
areas that they live.
When you are on a bicycle, you have the advantage of being able to stop whenever you want to see an
interesting animal or bird that you have never seen before. It is a quieter mode (方式) of transportation as
well, so you might even be able to take a picture. When you are on the beach, you can breathe that clean air
and view the beauty of the water and sand. It is a totally different experience from either simply sunbathing or
passing it in a car.
There are many choices of hiring a bicycle to experience the Gold Coast attractions. There are stores that
will fit a bike perfectly to your size. These bikes for both adults and children are in many styles and colors to
please any taste. If you have ever wanted to try a tandem bike (双人单车), now is your chance, because they
have those too.
A bicycle hire on Gold Coast is something that everyone should try at least once. This is a wonderful
chance for anyone who likes to cycle and it is also a cheap way to travel with your family.
B. you will cause much noise
C. you can"t enjoy the beautiful sights well
D. you can"t drive into some parks

Then you are probably quiet, shy, and you would rather follow than lead. You tend to be pessimist. At least,
this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the
meaning of colour preference, as well as the effect that colours have on human beings. 2_____. If you happen
to love brown, you did so, as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.
3_____. A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one;
and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. 4_____. A black bridge over the Thames
River, near London, used to be the scene of more suicides (自杀) than any other bridge in the area-until it was
repainted green. The number of suicide attempts immediately fell sharply. Perhaps it would have fallen even
more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.
5_____. It is an established fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when
their machines are painted orange rather than black or grey.
B. They tell us, among other facts, that we do not choose our favourite colour as grow up-we are born with
our preference.
C. The rooms are painted in different colours as you like.
D. If you do, you must be an optimist, a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement.
E. Light and bright colours make people not only happier but more active.
F. Life is like a picture or a poem, full of different colours. G. Colours do influence our moods-there is no
doubt about it
Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter "i",-- and many other brands are following suit.
The BBC"s iPlayer-which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the internet-adopted the title in 2008.
A lovely bear-popular in the US and UK-that plays music and video is called "iTeddy". A slimmed-down version
of London"s Independent newspaper, was launched last week under the name "i".
In general, single-letter prefix have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and
e-commerce first came into use.
Most "i" products are targeted at young people and considering the major readers of the Independent"s "i",
it"s no surprise that they"ve selected this fashionable name.
But it"s hard to see what"s so special about the letter "i". Why not use "a", "b" or "c" instead? According to
Tony Thorne, head of Language Center at King"s College, London, "i" works because its meaning has become
ambiguous. When Apple uses "i", no one knows whether it means internet, information, individual or interactive,
Thorne told BBC magazines "even when Apple created the iPod, it seems it didn"t have one clear definition," he
says.
"However, thanks to Apple, the term is now associated with portability (轻便)," adds Thorne.
Clearly the letter "i" also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each
person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.
Along with "Google" and "blog", readers of BBC magazines voted "i" as one of the top 20 words that have
come to define the last decade.
But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to the 1990s, products with "2000" in
their names became fashionable as the year was associated with all things advanced and modern. However, as
we entered the new century, the trend inevitably disappeared.
B. old readers
C. fashionable women
D. engineers
B. uncertain
C. definite
D. unique
B. environmentally friendly
C. advanced
D. recyclable
B. the popularity of "i" products may not last long
C. the letter "b" replace letter "i" to name the products
D. iTeddy is a live bear
