was an exaggeration for humorous purposes, but it is true that newspapers are an important source of
information. Many people begin their day by reading the paper. In this way they leam what is going on in
the world. Sometimes, however, they don"t have time to read the news carefully and must be satisfied with
a quick look at the front page;at other times they may be in such a hurry that they have time only to glance at the headlines.
There are newspapers to satisfy every reader. In the big cities there are many types of papers, with
several different editions every day. In small towns there are fewer newspapers and perhaps only one
edition each day. In some areas the
paper is printed weekly.
Most newspapers have several sections, especially on Sundays when the edition is larger than usual.
There are,in addition to the front page with the most important news, the sports section, the society page,
the comics, the amusement section,a business page, and the editorials.
Another type of publication which helps keep the population informed is the magazine. Some
magazines are published weekly, others are put out monthly. There are news magazines, literary magazines,
and magazines for such special interests as photography, sports, art, and music. Some are primarily for men, others for women, and there is a selection of children"s magazines, too. In the United States, there are publications for every taste and interest.

friendly transport and ease increasingly grid-locked city streets. It"s a highlight of a nationwide urban
public transport week. People were urged to take public transport, ride bikes or walk.
To help out, more than 200 new buses took to the streets. And the Beijing Subway laid on 10 more
trains for rush hour.
A Beijing resident said,"Today is car free day,and I do find the traffic much better and the bus can
go much faster. "
Another resident said,"I spent only half an hour going to work. It took me twice as long before, and
I can find seat on the bus today. "
But in some areas not signed up for traffic control, endless lines of cars can still be seen.
Some people say they just can"t do without their cars.
Another Beijing resident said,"Some people are willing to give up driving, but on certain days when I
have to take my child to school or weekend classes, the public transport is so bad that I can"t do it without a car. "
But the concept of "green"traffic is catching on. People say they believe it"s the first and honest step
in facing the serious traffic and environmental problems.
A driver said,"The car free day has a very important symbolic meaning. It does not mean that we must give up cars. It is to promote a concept,to encourage more people to contribute to the protection of the
environment. "
The Ministry of Construction calculates"Car Free Day"will cut 3,000 tons of emissions and save 33
million liters of gasoline. And it"s planning more frequent activities to raise public consciousness of energy
conservation and environmental protection.

contrary,I think we need to separate the basic fact of shyness from our ability to take part in a social
environment.
Look at one of the most famous shy people of them all,Johnny Carson. This man is painfully shy,yet
for decades he made a living talking and associating(交往) with different people every night,in front of a
national audience. Carson has never done away with his shyness, but he has successfully found a way to
deal with it to the extent that he could be, not just a talk show host, but a legend(传奇) among talk show
hosts. Look also at Sally Fields, who has recently admitted her problem with shyness. This is a woman
who has appeared in many films,TV shows and interviews, yet in her early years she was so shy that she
tumed down a lunch invitation from Jane Fonda because she was terribly afraid of meeting her.
I guess that our shyness is there because each of us is bom with some msecurity(不安全感) and this
insecurity prevents us from reaching out to others the way people with a more open personality do. As we grow up and become adults,we allow our social skills to grow and develop. But we are still stuck in kindergarten or elementary school or wherever it was when our shyness took root in our soul.
B. a not very normal mental condition
C. an emotional disability
D. something we pick up after birth
B. talk with as many people as possible
C. study where shyness comes from
D. look for ways to do away with one"s shyness
B. He did away with his shyness carefully.
C. He was described as a hero in some legend books.
D. He failed to become a good talk show host.
B. impolite when young
C. shy in her early years
D. close to Jane Fonda
B. we don"t feel safe at heart
C. we try to reach out to others all the time
D. we lack certain social skills
ever invented.Much of the blood on the street flows mainly from uncivil behavior of drivers who refuse to
respect the legal and moral rights of others. So the killing on the road may be regarded as a social
problem.
In fact, the enemies of society on wheels are rather harmless people-just ordinary people acting
carelessly, you might say. But it is a general truth both of law and common morality that carelessness is
no excuse when one"s actions could bring death or damage to others. A minority of killers go even
beyond carelessness to total negligence (疏忽).
Researchers have estimated that as many as 80 percent of all automobile accidents can be attributed
to the psychological condition of the driver. Emotional upsets can distort (扭曲 ) drivers" reactions, slow their judgment, and blind
them to dangers that might otherwise be clear. The experts warn that it is necessary for every driver to
make a conscious effort to keep one"s emotion under control.
Yet the irresponsibility that accounts for much of the problem is not confined (限制) to drivers.
Street walkers regularly break traffic rules. They are at fault in most vehicle walker accidents;and many
cyclist even believe that they
are not subject to the basic rules of road.
Significant legal advances have been made towards safer driving in the past few years. Safety
standards for vehicle have been raised both at the point of manufacture and through periodic
road-worthiness inspections. In addition, speed limits have been lowered. Due to these measures, the
accident rate has decreased. But the accident experts still worry because there has been little or no
improvement in the way drivers behave. The only real and lasting solution, say the experts,is to persuade
people that driving is a skilled task requiring constant care and concentration. Those who fail to do all
these things present a threat to those with whom they share the road.
B. To improve understanding between careless drivers and walkers.
C. To discuss traffic problems and propose possible solutions.
D. To remind drivers of the importance of safe driving.
B. To show how important it is for drivers to be emotionally healthy.
C. To show some of the inaccurate estimations by researchers.
D. To illustrate the hidden tensions in the course of driving.
B. Mindless people walking in the street.
C. Irresponsible drivers.
D. Irresponsible manufactures of automobiles.

great-grandparents.
Those still alive in Valdosta,Georgia in 2060 will be able to share a part of their youth with the youth
of the day, when the city"s time capsule (时间胶囊) is dug up in Drexel Park.
Students from the Valdosta City School System have had a hand in collecting information that will be
placed in the time capsule.
Kindergarten to the second graders studied transportation (交通). Third through fifth graders looked
at the technology of today. Sixth through eighth focused on (关注) music and entertainment. Ninth
through twelfth graders went to
work on fashion and food.
Students were asked to make a scrapbook (剪贴簿) page recording their specific (特定的) area.
The high school pages are a wonder of color and design.
Many students detai1(详述) the food of the moment. Susanna Sin,16,includes the local. restaurants. " People will want to know what is here, and maybe it will be here then," said Sin,an 11th grader. Sin
doubts that much will change
in 50 years. Teenagers will still want to hang out with friends, and people will still be searching for the things that make them happy, she said.
Education, however, would be completely different, she added. Technology will be even more
important in the lives of students in 2060.
Katherine Wakeley,16,said the scrapbook would give the people of 2060 a chance to see what
was popular in 2010 , especially where fashion was concerned (相关的). " Skinny jeans and rips in
your pants are the biggest things , "Wakeley said.
The hugely popular Glee television show,as well as teenage superstars Miley Cyrus and the Jonas
Brothers,is also mentioned in the scrapbook.
Though fashion, music and movies will change. Wakeley doesn"t believe that Valdosta will ever let go
of its greatest passion-football.
"It"ll still be here," Wakeley said.
All the students said it would be interesting to see the capsule opened, but the teenage dreaming of
escaping the hometown stopped them from saying they would be here to see it in 2060.
But "it would be cool to see them open it," Greenhaw said.
B. The possible changes in Valdosta over the next 50 years.
C. The most popular things for children in Valdosta in 2010.
D. Children in Valdosta collecting information for a time capsule.
B. Famous hotels.
C. The Jonas Brothers.
D. Best US inventions in 2010.
B. The passion for football.
C. The lifestyle of the city.
D. Education.
