impression from the very first day. You will face new people. You will be in a new place.
It may be difficult to know what to do. Here are five tips to help you make it through the first days at
a new job:
1. First impressions can last forever. Make sure you make a good one. Before your first day, find out
if your new job has a dress code (rules about what you can wear to work). If so, be sure to follow it.
No matter what, always be neat and clean.
2. Get to work on time. Give yourself an extra15 minutes to make sure you arrive on time.
3. Pay attention to introductions. One of the first things that your supervisor may do is to introduce you to
co-workers. These co-workers will be important to you. They are the ones who will answer your
questions when the boss is not around.
4. Ask plenty of questions. Make sure that your supervisor has told you what is expected of you. If
he or she has not told you your duties, ask for a list. Set daily and weekly goals for yourself.
5. Never be the first one to leave. Observe(观察) what your co-workers do around quitting time
(下班时间). It does not look good for you to be eager to leave.

something that you can"t sleep at night? 1 This worry in your mind can made your body feel bad. You
may feel angry, frustrated, scared, or afraid-which can give you a stomachache or a headache.
2 Good or normal stress might happen when you"re called to answer a question in class or when you
have to give a speech. This kind of stress that can help you to get things better done. 3
But bad stress can happen if the stressful feelings keep going over a long time. You may not feel well
if your parents are fighting, if a family member is sick, if you"re having problems at school, or if you"re
going through anything else that makes you upset every day. 4
5 That means making good decisions about how to spend your time. If you"re only dealing with
school stuff and have no time to play, you can get stressed. Make sure you keep yourself in mind: Sleep,
Exercise , Leisure (休闲), and Food. If you take care of yourself and get enough sleep and food, and if
you exercise and leave time for fun stuff, you"ll probably be less stressed out!
A. However, there are two different kinds of stress.
B. Can you tell a kind of stress from another one?
C. The best way to keep stress away is to have a balanced life.
D. That kind of stress isn"t going to help you, and it can actually make you sick.
E. Since bad stress is harmful for us, you"d better try to change it into good stress.
F. If so, then you know what stress is. Stress is what you feel when you are worried or uncomfortable
about something.
G. For example, you may do a better job on your test if the stress pushes you to prepare well before
the test.
bears. They are in northern Pennsylvania"s Pocono Mountains, a home they share with an abundance of
other wildlife.
The streams, lakes, grassland, mountain ridges and forests that make the Poconos an ideal place for
black bears have also attracted more people to the area. Open spaces are threatened by plans for housing
estates and important habitats are endangered by highway construction. To protect the Poconos" natural
beauty from irresponsible development, the Nature Conservancy(大自然保护协会)named the area one
of America"s "Last Great Places".
Operating out of a century - old schoolhouse in the village of Long Pond, Pennylvania, Cook, one of
the Conservaney"s branches, is working with local people and business leaders to balance ________________________. By developing partnerships with people like Francis Altemose, the Conservancy has been able to protect more than, 14,000 acres of environmentally important land in the area.
Altemose"s family has farmed in the Pocono area for generations. Two years ago Francis worked with
the Conservancy to include his farm in a county farmland protection program, As a result, his family"s land can be protected from development and the Altemoses will be better able to provide a safe financial future for their 7--year-old grandson.
Cook attributes the Conservancy"s success in the Poconos to having a local presence and a
commitment to working with local residents(英才苑居民 ).
"The key to protecting these remarkable lands is connecting with the local community," Cook said, "The people who live there respect the land. They value quiet forests, clear streams and abundant wildlife. They are eager to help with conservation efforts."

suddenly becomes too difficult to understand after his clear words on screen; a secretary"s tone seems
more rejecting than I"d imagined it would be. Time itself becomes fluid- hours becomes minutes, and alternately seconds stretch into days. Weekends, once a highlight of my week, are now just two ordinary days.
For the last three years, since I stopped working as a producer for Charlie Rose, I have done much of my work as a telecommuter. I submit articles and edit them by E-mail and communicate with colleagues on Internet mailing lists. My boyfriend lives in England, so much of our relationship is computer-mediated.
If I desired, I could stay inside for weeks without wanting anything. I can order food, and manage my
money, love and work. In fact,at times I have spent as long as three weeks alone at home, going out
only to get mail and buy newspapers and groceries. I watched most of the blizzard of 96 on TV.
But after a while, life itself begins to feel unreal. I start to feel as though I"ve merged (融合) with my
machines, taking data in spitting them back out, just another node (波节)on the Net. Others on line report the same symptoms. We start to strongly dislike the outside forms of socializing. It"s like attending
an A. A. meeting in a bar with everyone holding a half-sipped drink. We have become the Net opponents" worst nightmare.
What first seemed like a luxury, crawling from bed to computer, not worrying about hair, and clothes
and face, has become an avoidance,a lack of discipline. And once you start replacing real human
contact with cyber-interaction, coming back out of the cave can be quite difficult.
At times, I turn on the television and just leave it to chatter in the background, something that I"d never
done previously. The voices of the programs soothe (安慰) me, but then I"m jarred (使感不快) by the
commercials. I find myself sucked in by soap operas, or compulsively (强制性能地) needing to keep up with the latest news and the weather. "Dateline," "Frontline," "Nightline," CNN, every possible angle of
every story over and over and over, even when they are of no possible use to me. Work moves from
foreground to background.

nice to have someone help you when you"re cooking. But this voice is not from a man. You are alone!
Then where does it come from? Is it from a ghost? No, this isn"t a ghost kitchen-it"s the kitchen of the
future.
Scientists are working to improve everything in the kitchen, from fridges to tables, and even the ways
we cook. They are making a system. It will help a person cook a meal. You don"t need cookbooks. You
can hear how to cook food.
The fridge of the smart kitchen has a scanner. It looks at the foods in the fridge. It will order more milk
from the store when your milk has gone bad or there is no more in the fridge. The gloves will test the
temperature of everything they touch and say, "Need to cook longer" or "Hot and ready to eat". If you
leave them on the stove by mistake, they"ll say, "Fire!" Even the knives and spoons will speak. For
example, if your food is bad, the knives and spoons will tell you not to eat it.
The future kitchen may look wonderful, but it"s not cheap. The multimedia fridge costs about 8,000
dollars. So even though high-tech kitchens are no longer a dream, not everyone can afford one.
