with the deadly foot-and-mouth disease,Nov. 2 2010,Thursday. People fear that livestock farms in other
parts of the country could be hit by the virus soon.
On Monday, the disease was first detected on two pig farms in Andong, about half a year after the last
disease broke out in Korea. A cattle farm in the area also fell victim to the animal disease the following
day.
The Ministry for Food,Agriculture,Forestry and Fisheries made sure that three more cases of
foot-and-mouth disease appeared on Thursday and decided to kill all the animals at the farms and others
at nearby places to stop the spread of the virus to other regions. Over 800 cows and pigs within a 500
meter range of the infected farms were killed and buried underground.
"Three suspected cases were reported Wednesday, near the pig farms where the first outbreak was
reported. The laboratory tests today showed that all three cattle farms were infected with the disease,"
a ministry official said. Two newly infected cattle farms were less than 4 kilometers away from the two
pig farms, while the third one was only 2. 5 kilometers away.
The ministry also said another cattle farm in Andong reported suspected cases of foot-and-mouth
disease on its livestock Thursday, indicating the disease will likely continue to spread across the city and
possibly beyond.
The government has culled more than 33,000 animals near the affected farms Monday alone under its
disease prevention program. Additionally, all 84 livestock markets across the nation were closed
Wednesday for a period to prevent spread of the disease.

like traveling by car or by air.
Officials of the United States Department of Transportation made a study in 2001. The study is about
how many miles Americans traveled by different means of transportation. They only studied trips longer
than 50 miles. The study showed that fifty-six percent of all miles were traveled in personal vehicle.
Forty-one percent were traveled in an airplane. Two percent were traveled in a bus. And less than one
percent of miles were traveled in a train.
Amtrak is the national provider of train transportation in the United States. In the past ten years, the
number of its passengers has increased by eighteen percent. Although the number of passengers has
increased,it is still very small now. In countries such as France,Germany,or Japan, more people use trains.
There are several reasons why many people __________________________.
Firstly,Americans love to drive their own cars. On highways, cars can travel as fast as trains. These
highways connect all major cities in America. Secondly, many travelers like to be independent. When they
use their own cars they can decide when to travel. Thirdly, many buses travel between major cities. Bus
travel is less costly than train travel.
In a huge country like the United States, cities are far away from each other. In some cases, travel
from one city to another by train may take more than a day. Airplanes can carry passengers over long
distances much faster. People who do not want to spend long time traveling by train decide to fly. For
these people saving time is the most important thing.

can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair weather
friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down,
they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities
(品质) of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability (可靠).
Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how
another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He
puts himself in the other person"s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also
a good listener.
At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults (过错) in
others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on (信赖) a good friend. If he t
ells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I
need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom
we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I
especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We
share experience (经验) and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humor
(幽默), too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I
know that he is looking for the same quality in me.
When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I"ve found a friend!
B. honesty.
C. reliability.
D. a sense of humor.
B. you will be refused when you get into trouble
C. you will become rich
D. you can be sure that you get real friends
B. be helped with money
C. understand each other"s feelings
D. have money or luck
B. where to choose friends
C. how to get along with friends
D. the importance of having a friend

trial and error,I have finally found ways to come up with plans, organize them and follow through
with them.
Make an outline of everything you need to have and do to make your plan happen.Make a
list of all of the steps that need to be accomplished and think about what needs to be done.
Detail everything thorougy and read over it so you can start coming up with some mental
solutions of how to carry out your plans.
You should ensure that if for some reason way one doesn"t work, you have way two and
way three to lean back on.Therefore, different ways are needed at hand. It"s just a matter of
being organized.Chances are that there is always more than one way of doing things, and chances
are that if one of those ways doesn"t work, one of the other ones will.
Committing yourself to finishing at least part if not all of your plan at once is also necessary.
It will show that you not only have initiative to get things rolling, but that you are interested in the
results obtained with making the move to get everything done.
If you make a commitment to finish before a specific time, make sure that you carry that out,
and be sure to do everything in the way you said you would, within the time frame you set for
yourself.
Don"t try to tackle more things all at a time. All that does is delay your progress, distract you
and make you lose your interest, motivation and energy.
Carrying out an effective plan requires being as organized as possible. You will only achieve
this by sticking to the order of the plan and not deviating or trying to do more at a time.
Last but not the least, you should never abandon things mid?project. It will only annoy everyone
around you including yourself.Unfinished plans are a waste of time, energy and,in some cases, even
money.
So,don"t be afraid of organization. The older we get,the more necessary it becomes to have the
skills necessary to follow through with confidence and to be able to carry through plans in an organized
and manageable way.It pays to be organized, after all.

Collecting mid writing news is like researching in history:the best information comes from
those who were there at the time.So if we want to study the history of China in the sixth century
AD,we look at the writings of the people who lived then. They are called the primary sources
because they tell us what it was like to live then.People at a much later date who write about
the same events are called the secondary sources. For example, when we read the original writings
of Jia Sixie on agriculture,we are reading a primary source;when we read about Jia Sixie in our
textbook we are reading secondary source because the passage was written about him and his ideas
many years after he died.
When we make news we use primary and secondary sources. We can see this most clearly in
TV programmes. As we watch the news on TV,the person presenting the programme in the studio
is the secondary source (because he tells us about the news)and the reporter in Iraq or Washington
is the primary source(because he is telling us about what is actually happening there).Without these
reporters acting as primary sources, you would never find out what really happened in a war, earthquake,
sports meeting, concertor festival. These reporters explain what is happening so we have a clearer
idea of what is going on there. They often take photographers with them who act as primary source
by giving pictures of events.
In a newspaper the position is different because these two roles are often combined. This means
a reporter who investigates a story may be the same person who writes it.If this happens, the reporter
is both the primary and the secondary source. But the photographer who works with him/her is still
a primary source.
One of the reasons that it is important to separate primary and secondary sources is that they
help us to decide what is a fact and what is an opinion.A fact is something that everybody agrees
has happened. An opinion is somebody"s idea of what happened. So facts and opinions are often
mixed in any report, whether in a newspaper or on TV.
Searching for the truth
dwells and grades are stored. The front office also reinforces familiar hierarchy(等级制度):
principal at the top, teachers in the middle, kids on the bottom, sitting with hands folded at
their desks.
Now, imagine a school where the organizational structure is completely flat. At the New
Country School in Henderson, Minn, there is no front office. Visitors are immediately embraced
by an airy atrium that is the centerpiece of this one-room schoolhouse. And all around the room,
124 students sit at desks - real office desks - working at their own personal computers on their
own projects.
When Dee Thomas and her colleagues got together 15 years ago to design a new high school,
they knew there was one thing that had to go: The bell. "You don"t go into your job in the morning
and say, "OK, for the first 45 minutes of my job, I"m going to do the math part." And then a bell
goes off, and you do the social history part of your job. You don"t do that," Thomas said.
There are no teachers at New Country. Every few weeks, students must present projects
they"ve been working on to the rest of the school community. To prepare for their presentations,
they gather at tables in the middle of the school atrium and present their work to their "advisers."
Kids at New Country test better than their peers on the state tests and on the pre-college
ACT. The school sends 90 percent of its graduates to college. But that doesn"t tell the whole
story. New Country struggles to keep its seniors from leaving. The school"s senior project is
demanding - 300 hours of work.
But for some students, New Country offers a rare alternative, a choice they can"t find anywhere
else. And the school is constantly visited by educators from around the world looking for new ideas.
That"s the foundation of efforts to reform American high schools today - that there"s a need to
experiment with an institution that is failing millions of students
B. to present a sharp contrast with the experimental school, New Country.
C. to introduce the topic, New Country, of the passage.
D. to call on students to register in the typical high school
B. Students consult with "advisers", who "teach" in the traditional sense.
C. No bells in New Country, students choose how to spend their time.
D. No traditional classes, students work on projects they select themselves.
B. alternative
C. comfortable conditions
D. teaching methods
B. typical high school and experimental School.
C. new schools in future in America.
D. education reform in America.
