any English speakers permanently (永久) settled in that northern location. But in 1616 it was already
the subject of the book A Description of New England, by that busy explorer and promoter Captain
John Smith, who had visited the land two years before.
According to Smith, New England owes its name to Sir Francis Drake. Not that Drake ever saw or
talked about New England, but in sailing around the world he stopped in 1597 at a place on the Pacific
coast of North American and called it Nova Albion, the Latin for "New England". Following Drake"s
lead, Smith called the area at a similar latitude (纬度) on the Atlantic coast by the same name, translated
into plain English.
The very words New England show the direction of Smith"s thinking. This was to be an extension (延
伸) of Old England, not a new kind of community. The map in his book gives only English names for the
places of New England, and he provides a special list showing thirty American Indian names replaced by
English ones: Accormack by Plymouth, Massachusets River by Charles River, Kinebeck by
Edenborough, to list a few. Some of those changes succeeded. But what finally happened after the
Plymouth colonists landed four years later has turned out differently than Smith had imagined, for Indian
names as well as English ones still cover the new England area.

flowered shirt and women often wear long flowered dresses. There are traditional Chinese,
Japanese and Filipino holidays and all the holidays from the United States. They call Hawaii
the Aloha State. Aloha means both hello and goodbye. It also means " I love you".
Usually when people from different countries, races and traditions live together, there are
serious problems. There are so many people living in Hawaii, but in general, people have
learned to live together in peace.
Hawaiians get most of their money from visitors, and most of the visitors come from the
mainland and from Japan. There are so many people living in Hawaii now that there are
residential areas ( 住宅区 ) where there used to be farms. Some of the big sugar and pineapple
companies have moved to the Philippines, where they do not have to pay workers as much
money. The families of the first people who came from the U.S mainland own the important
banks and companies .Japanese are also buying or starting business here.

years from now, we will have used up most of the earths resources. We will have made our seas so
dirty that we will not be able to eat fish from them. There will be so many people in the world that we
will have to use all the countryside for housing; there will be no farmland left.
Other people have a different idea about the future. In their view, the city of the future will be a
huge pyramid-shaped(金字塔形的) building, which will be floating on the surface of the sea. About
5,000 families will live there, and there will also be schools, shops in it.
In a hundred years"time, people will not need to use oil. They will heat their homes with power from
the sun.
Think of space. Perhaps a station will be set up on the moon; people will be able to visit the moon
as to urists. They may even spend their holidays in space, travelling from planet to planet.
What an interesting picture!
Many people don"t think about the future. "I don"t care. I"ll be dead. "they say. But it is our duty
to care because the world of a hundred years"time will be the world of our children"s and their children
after them.

The American book " Who Moved My Cheese" has been a best- seller all over the world. 1 .
Now its author Spence Johnson has written a book just for teenagers.
The book tells us that when facing changes in our lives, like a new school or new friends, don"t be
afraid. Instead, use these changes to make a better life.
2 A school is changing from having two terms to three terms because there are too many
students.
Several teenagers are talking about this. Most of them are unhappy and worried. But Chris laughs
and tells a story about two mice, two little people and some cheese. 3 Here, cheese means
something important in life, like moving to a new class or getting into college. 4 The mice realize
that they can"t change what has happened and have to find more cheese. 5 The little people, however,
can"t do this. They are afraid of change so they find no cheese.
After Chris finishes the story, the friends understand one thing: to get more cheese, move in a new
direction quickly . His friends understand how this can be used in the changes all teenagers face, such
as doing well at school or having good relationships or just feeling good about yourself.
A.It tells a story which happened between mice and people.
B.It teaches people how to face changes in their lives.
C.But they find the cheese is gone.
D.However, some strange things happened in a school.
E.The book gives an example of a change at school.

hold attention and interest of your students; you must be a clear speaker, with a good, strong,
pleasing voice which is fully under your control; you must be able to act what you are teaching,
in order to make its meaning clear.
A good teacher doesn"t sit still before his class; he stands all the time he is teaching; he walks
about, using his arms, hands and fingers to help him in his explanations, and his face to express
his feelings. Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness, the quality and musical note of his voice
always changing according to what he is talking about.
The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn"t mean he will indeed
be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important differences between the teacher"s
work and the actor"s. The actor has to speak words he has learnt by heart; he has to repeat exactly
the same words each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways in which he
uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand. What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt
words seem natural on the stage.
A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play-they
ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don"t understand something, they say so.
The teacher therefore has to meet the needs of his audience. He can"t learn his part by heart, because
their brains couldn"t keep discipline: they couldn"t keep strictly to what another has written.

company lately? If you are kept 2 , you"ll be forced to 3 some country or easy-listening type drivel
(废话). Call your doctor"s office, and the same thing 4 . How many times do you want to hear Eine
Kleine Nacht"s 5 in the daytime or "Winter" from Vivadi"s Four Seasons in the spring? 6 , I"ve
always thought that Handel"s music was 7 and Vivadi"s music was dull next to Handel"s.
I don"t know how all this force-fed music got 8 . I suppose it was the background music in
elevators. A few years ago, the governor of Georgia got the 9 that classical music was good for a
10 brain development. He actually got the legislature to appropriate (拨专款) enough money to give
every new mother a 11 music tape to take home with her. And you know 12 was probably on it?
Eine Kleine Nacht"s music and "Winter". I"ll bet that those 13 have done more to make babies 14
classical music than all the music appreciation 15 ever taught.
And how about when you make a business call from you 16 and are forced to hear music while
you have to wait to be 17 ? You can"t put the call on speakerphone, because the 18 would disturb
the people around you, 19 you"re just left there holding the phone. You can"t 20 , because the music is
blasting in your ear. I love music-but enough is enough.
