achievement is the result of gruelling hard work and intense practice.Usually athletes say how hard it
is to win the big games. At the opposite end of the spectrum, however,is the fact that losing the big game,
or,in my case, all the games, can be even tougher.
From the spectators’ point of view, last year’s basketball season for my high school team was nothing
short of an embarrassment. And while 0 and 20 is certainly nothing to be proud of,that season had a bigger
impact on me than any other, and probably more than any season since.
As a team captain,I knew it probably wouldn’t be the easiest year, but did I ever think we would
lose every game? Of course not.Since six of our top players had graduated,it was clear that we were a
young team who would struggle. The struggle began earlier than expected, though,as our team’s starting
center was suspended for the season, and two key members decided to quit after two weeks. At some
point, quitting probably passed through every player’s mind, but,in the end,we all stuck it out, vowing to
work even harder.
Then there came a time when even our own coach had given up on us.Personally,I felt like it was
no longer worth giving my all.I thought,if even the coach doesn’t believe in us,why should I? But just as
my hope began to fade,a teammate called a meeting. He said,“Nobody thinks we’re going to win,and
heck,we may not,but,as teammates and friends,we_owe_it_to_each_other_to_give_it_our_allevery_
game.”
Sure,it was a little cliche (陈旧的),but it was that moment that taught me how to be a leader. It hit me
then that I may have been a captain,but I,like others in my position,certainly didn’t deserve the role.As a
leader you can never quit on the team who looks up to you.It is one thing to be named captain and feel
great and go through the motions, but it is quite another to be a real captain and make sure everyone works to their potential all the time.
I am sure it is great to go through high school without losing and bringing home awards. But in all
honesty,I relish the fact that my team lost every game last year.It may not help me to become a better
basketball player, but it already has made me a better leader, and person.

Play that song you love so much. As a preschooler can tell you, repetition can lead to pleasure.
When you experience something more than once, you notice more details about it each time, and it
increases your enjoyment. That"s why you love revisi ting that jazz club, favourite restaurant, and
beloved old Woody Allen movie. Of course, you can overdo it.
Don"t buy boxed sets of DVDs. Economist(经济学家) Tyler says that much of the joy we get
from our buying lies in the experience of finding them out, getting them home, and opening them up.
If you receive 18 DVDs in one package, you"ll use up the excitement all at once. Buy things one a time
and space out the pleasure.

stop watching TV for either a week or a month. Many could not complete the task and some families
quarrelled or even fought. It was quite interesting and now I will say something about TV.
After TV became a product most families could afford, people bought and started to watch their new
TVs.Both adults and children became less creative in problem solving, less able to focus on tasks, and
less tolerant of flexible time.
In my family, we grew up with the TV on.Every weekend, we watched Gun Smoke and Bonanza
together as a family.TV provides us with a comfortable background when we want to learn a foreign
language at home, and it entertains us cheaply with live action sports, incomparable performing arts and
important events of the world. In addition, it educates us about everything from the cells in our body to
the galaxies in the universe.
Perhaps it"s not even practical to live without television unless our views change unexpectedly as we
get older.I don"t think that TV damages us so much as it robs us of time that could be spent doing other
things such as learning new skills, getting some exercise or doing volunteer work.
I was lucky to have a family that watched TV together.Today there seems to be a TV in every room
of the house and there"s no need to agree on a program to watch. To watch TV or not is more of a
question for adults than for us, and even though we all say we want to cut down the time we spend in
front of the tube, we never really do.TV_has_us_hypnotized!

from their partner. While this financial unfaithfulness may appear as distrust in a relationship, in truth it may
just be a form of financial protection. With almost half of all marriages ending in divorce, men and women
are realizing they need to be financially savvy, regardless of whether they are in a relationship.
The financial hardship on individuals after a divorce can be extremely difficult, even more so when
children are involved. The lack of permanency in relationships, job and family life may be the cause of a
growing trend to keep a secret bank account hidden from a partner, in other words, an"escape fund".
Margaret"s story is far from unique. She is a representative of a growing number of women in longterm
relationships who are becoming protective of their own earnings.Every month on pay day, she banks
hundreds of dollars into a savings account she keeps from her husband. She has been doing this throughout their sixyear marriage and has built a nest egg worth an incredible$100,000.Margaret says if her husband
found about her secret savings he"d be hurt and would take this as a sign that she wasn"t sure of the
marriage."He"d think it was my escape fund so that financially I could afford to get out of the relationship if
it went wrong.I know you should approach marriage as being forever and I hope ours is, but you can
never be sure."
Like many of her fellow secret savers, Margaret was hurt in a former relationship and has since been
very guarded about her own money.
Coming clean to your partner about being a secret saver may not be all that bad.Take Colleen for
example, who had been saving secretly for a few years before she confessed to her partner."I decided to
open a savings account and start building a nest egg of my own.I wanted to prove to myself that I could
put money in the bank and leave it there for a rainy day."

A. suspicious
B. secure
C. wise
D. simple
3. Which inference can we make about Margaret?
A. She is a unique woman.
B. She was once divorced.
C. She is going to retire.
D. She has many children.
4. The author mentions Colleen"s example to show________.
A. any couple can avoid marriage conflicts
B. privacy within marriage should be respected
C. everyone can save a fortune with a happy marriage
D. financial disclosure is not necessarily bad
5. Which of the following is the best title of this passage?
