tolerance for falling in despair.Especially now we"ve got drugs for getting rid of sad feelings-whether it"s
after losing a job, the breakup of a relationship or the death of a loved one.So it"s no surprise that more
and more people are taking them.
But is this really such a good idea?A growing number of voices from the world of mental health
research are saying it isn"t.They fear that the increasing tendency to treat normal sadness as a disease is
playing fast and loose (行为轻率). Sadness, they argue, serves a useful purpose-and if we lose it, we
lose out.Yet many psychiatrists (精神病医生) insist not.Sadness has a nasty habit of turning into
depression (抑郁症), they warn.Even when people are sad for good reason, they should take drugs to
make themselves feel better.
So who is right? Is sadness something we cannot live without or something horrible never to touch?
There are lots of ideas about why feeling sad should become part of human life.It may be a selfprotection
strategy, as other primates (灵长类) also show signs of sadness.A losing monkey that doesn"t show
sadness after it loses a fight may be seen as continuing to challenge the winning monkey-and that could
result in death.
In humans, sadness has a further function:we may display sadness as a form of communication.By
acting sad, we tell other community members that we need support.
Then there is the idea that creativity is connected to dark moods. There are plenty of great artists,
writers and musicians who have suffered from depression or disorder.Scientists find that people with
signs of depression perform better at a creative task, and that negative moods make people think deeply
over the unhappy experience, which allows creative processes to come to the front. There is also evidence
that too much happiness can be bad for your career.A doctor found that people who scored 8 out of 10
on a happiness test were more successful in income and education than 9s or 10s.The happiest people
lose their willingness to make changes to their lives that may benefit them.

paintings had been shown in New York galleries(艺术馆). I enjoyed the hours in my studio. But
now everything was shadowed with fear.
One day, after I showed photos of my paintings to Ron, who was an eye doctor and sculptor
(雕塑家), he asked me to go to his school and show slides(幻灯片) of my work to his students
with developmental disorders.
The next day, when I arrived at the school, I found one student was in the art room already waiting,
a young man in wheelchair. His head was held up by wires. His fingers were bent backward. When I
came in, his eyes met mine. A burst of voltage(电压) passed from him to me.
Two other students arrived, one of them wheeled in by Ron, who had invited me. This boy"s arms
were lashed (扎捆) to his wheelchair.
"Tim is a professional artist," Ron told the group, " and is here to share his ideas. " Ideas? Getting free
of the limitations of the physical world-that was the point of my paintings. Was I supposed to share this
with people in the wheelchairs? Nervously I showed slides of my paintings. You make art to say
something you can"t say with words, I explained. These paintings might be about being held down, and
getting free.
After I showed the last slide, Ron said, "Maybe Tim will come and visit again." " What do you say?"
he asked me. I looked at the man with the wired head. When our eyes met, he nodded with a slight
movement of his head.
The next few nights, I lay awake thinking about the million things these people could not do: climb a
tree, hold a spoon and turn the pages of a book. Yet there was that light in their eyes. What would they
tell us if they had the power?
Then I called the school and reached the director of the ars program. "I was there a week ago,
showing slides of my paintings in Ron"s class. I was wondering if I could come back. " "To help with the
class?" she asked.
"No," I said. "To start a new one. "

Obama"s Dreams from My Father and how it had changed my views of the current US president.
The person I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, "a wonderfully written book".
However, he then proceeded to talk about Mr Obama in a way that suggested he had no idea of his
background at all.I sensed that I was talking to a book liar.
And it seems that he is not the only one.Clearly two thirds of people have lied about reading a book
which they haven"t.In the World Book Day survey, Dreams from My Father is at number 9.The survey
lists top ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading. As I"m not one to lie too
often, I"ll admit here and now that I haven"t read the entire ten books. But I am pleased to say that I have
read the book at number one, George Orwell"s 1984.I think it"s absolutely outstanding.
Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to impress someone they were speaking to.This
could be difficult if the conversation became more indepth!
The World Book Day survey also has some other interesting information in it.It shows that many
people lie about having read classical works by Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, Charles Dickens and
so on.But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, they named J. K.Rowling, Jilly Cooper, and
Stephen King (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Fortyone percent of people asked admitted they
turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story.
So which books have you lied about reading-if any-and which is your favourite?
1. The main reason why people lie about reading is to________.
A. make fun of the listener
B. impress the listener
C. please the listener
D. interest the listener
2. The underlined word"proceeded" in the passage probably means "________".
A. wanted
B. happened
C. continued
D. stopped
3. What does the World Book Day survey show?
A. Nearly half of the people surveyed didn"t read through a whole classical book.
B. People don"t like Dreams from My Father and George Orwell "s 1984.
C. Few people lie about having read classical works by Jane Austen.
D. People usually enjoy reading books by Charles Dickens.
4. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Are You a Book Liar?
B. Readers Are All Liars
C. World Book Day
D. Dreams from My Father
