is 3%, the population growing at rate of 1% per year.
2._____

Public health programs and improved nutrition over the past 30 years have brought about declines in
mortality rates in the developing nations. But fertility rates (出生率) have not declined as quickly, and the
result has been high rates of population growth.Reduced population growth depends to some extent on
decreased birth rates.
4._____

supposed to benefit from them.
5. _____
To a great extent, in developing countries people want large families because they believe they need
them.In some societies, children are important sources of farm labor, and they may thus make significant

阅读理解。     To some people, happiness is something to do with simplicity, and it is the ability to extract pleasure
from the simplest things-such as a peach stone (桃核). It is obvious that it has nothing to do with success.
For Sir Henry Stewart, it was certainly successful. I remember some ten years ago when he was made King"s Counsel, Amos and I went to congratulate him.We smiled happily; he merely looked as miserable
as though he"d received a punishment. He took his success as a child does his medicine. And not one of his achievements brought even a sign of a smile to his tired eyes.
I asked him one day what it was like to achieve all one"s ambitions. He looked down at his roses and
went on watering them. Then he said, "The only value in achieving one"s ambitions is that you then realize
that they are not worth achieving."
Yesterday, I was passing his house and he called me,"Come and see, Jan.Look! I have done it at last!" There he was, holding a small box of earth in his hand.I observed three tiny shoots out of it.
"And there were only three!" he said, his eyes laughing to heaven.
     "Three what?" I asked.
"Peach stones," he replied. "I"ve always wanted to make peach stones grow, even since I was a child,
when I used to take them home after a party, or as a man after a banquet. And I used to plant them, and
then forgot where I planted them. But now at last I have done it. I had only three stones, and three shoots," he counted.
Then Sir Henry ran off, calling for his wife to come and see his achievement-his achievement of
simplicity.1. From what fact could we see Sir Henry was successful?A. He felt happy from the simplest things.

阅读理解     During my high school years, the most important thing was what I was wearing to the Friday night
dance and who I was taking. Although college was talked about, it was the least of my worries.
When I was graduating eighth grade and starting high school, my older brother was graduating
twelfth grade and going onto college. For my graduation, he gave me a card in which he wrote, "Enjoy
your four years. . . They go by fast." I remember not believing him then, but looking back. . . He was
right. Those four years shaped who I was as a person, pushed me to my limit and encouraged me to
become an adult.
However, I was so completely absorbed in my junior and senior years of high school, that when
someone spoke of college I brushed it off. I wasn"t ready to leave my comfort zone of having all of my
closest friends together and knowing what every single day was going to be like. Studying was something
I did only AFTER I nailed my halftime dance performance. I knew my parents wanted me to go to
college, so I told them I would go to community college (社区学院) and I didn"t worry about my SAT
(美国大学入学考试) scores.
When my senior year passed and everyone graduated and went off to their own colleges, I started to
wish I had done the same. My friends were living away, meeting new people, and discovering new
places, while I was living at home and driving to and from class every day. It seemed exactly like high
school. I hated it!I thought college was supposed to be different! Why didn"t I take more time to
research colleges and do the same?I ended up loving college and wishing I had four years to enjoy the
campus (大学校园) atmosphere instead of two.
My advice to anyone thinking about attending college is to think about it very seriously and look into
all of your choices well ahead of time. Now I have graduated and I am working fulltime and I would do
anything to go back to my high school days for a second chance!1. Why didn"t the author worry about his SAT scores?A. He wanted to go to community college.
B. He had been admitted for his gift in dance.
C. He was well prepared for the exam.
D. He believed his brother would help him. 2. When in high school, the author________. A. drove to and from class every day
B. buried himself in his study all the time
C. enjoyed talking about future college life
D. lived in the school except on holidays 3. What did the author"s brother mean by "Enjoy your four years. . . They go by fast."?A. He wished the author to have more dance.
B. He advised the author to value the years.
C. He encouraged the author to leave his comfort zone.
D. He suggested the author aim at a community college. 4. Talking of his high school years, the author feels________. A. regretful

Wikipedia is built differently from almost every other top 50 website. We have a small number of paid
staff, just twentythree.Wikipedia content is free to use by anyone for any purpose. Our annual expenses are less than six million dollars.Wikipedia is run by the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation, which I founded in
2003.
Wikipedia is driven by a global community of more than 150,000 volunteers-all devoted to sharing
knowledge freely.Over almost eight years, these volunteers  have  contributed  more  than 11 million
articles in 265 languages.More than 275 million people come to our website every month to access
information, free of charge and free of advertising.
But Wikipedia is more than a website. We share a common cause:Imagine a world in which every
single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That"s our commitment.
Your donation helps us in several ways. Most importantly, you will help us cover the increasing cost of
managing global traffic to one of the most popular websites on the Internet.Funds also help us improve
the software that runs Wikipedia-making it easier to search, easier to read, and easier to write for.We are
committed to increasing the free knowledge movement worldwide,by taking on new volunteers, and
building strategic partnerships with institutions of culture and learning.
Wikipedia is different. It"s the largest encyclopedia (百科全书)  in history, written by volunteers.Like a
