阅读理解     Phil White has just returned from an 18,000-mile, around-the-world bicycle trip. White had two
reasons for making this epic journey. First of all, he wanted to use the trip to raise money for charity,
which he did. He raised ~70,000 for the British charity, Oxfam. White"s second reason for making the
trip was to break the world record and become the fastest person to cycle around the world. He is still
waiting to find out if he has broken the record or not.
White set off from Trafalgar Square, in London, on 19th June 2004 and was back 299 days later. He
spent more than l,300 hours in the saddle(车座)and destroyed four sets of tyres and three bike chains.
He had the adventure of his life crossing Europe, the Middle East, India, Asia, Australia, New Zealand
and the   Americas. Amazingly, he did all of this with absolutely no support team. No jeep carrying food,
water and medicine. No doctor. Nothing! Just a bike and a very, very long road.
The journey was lonely and desperate at times. He also had to fight his way across deserts, through
jungles and over mountains. He cycled through heavy rains and temperatures of up to 45 degrees, all to
help people in need. There were other dangers along the road. In Iran, he was chased by armed robbers
and was lucky to escape with his life and the little money he had. The worst thing that happened to him
was having to cycle into a headwind on a road that crosses the south of Australia. For 1,000 kilometres
he battled against the wind that was constantly pushing him. This part of the trip was slow, hard work
and depressing, but he made it in the end. Now Mr. White is back and intends to write a book about his
adventures.1.  When Phil White returned from his trip, he________.A. broke the world record

题。

A. Slow Down Your Life
B. Escape Now and Then
C. Separate Your Actions
D. Allow Yourself to Be Weak
E. Relieve Pressure by Firmly Saying " No"
F. Stop Expecting Everything to Be Perfect

                                                            How to Simplify Your Life
Less is more. This is why we say: reduce things by half instead of doubling them, get rid of junk
instead of piling it up, relax instead of stressing, slow down instead of speeding up. Apply these
principles in your everyday life in a conscious way. You will then find yourself well along on your journey
to simplification.
1._____
When you concentrate on one task, you find you have energy that you didn"t even know you had.
Just imagine: you arc at a fair and you have to carry two heavy pigs over 100 yards. If you keep
grabbing one and then the other, it will take forever, because one of them will keep slipping out from
under your arm and running off. But if you tie one pig in a place, pick up the other, gather all your
strength and make a dash for the finish line, pause for a moment, run bock and get the other one, and
with great determination, carry the second pig to the finish line, then you can be sure of succcss.
2. ______
The pressure at work is on the increase in all occupations. In the modem nuclear family, the
expectations that formerly would have been shared among all the relatives are now concentrated on the
individual partner.
If you have the feeling that 24 hours per day are not enough for nil the things you need to do, then it"s
not because the day has too few hours, but because you have too many activities. A simple fact that
overloaded people often tend to forget. The solution is equally simple; refuse to accept so many work
assignments in your private life or your working life.
3._____
"I can handle stress" is regarded as a positive statement in the world of work. People who can handle
stress are given more and more to cope with - until one day they break.
Pay careful attention to the signs that tell you that you arc under more stress than you can cope with.
These signals came from various areas of life. You become ill, or your work efficiency decreases.
If you have any of these symptoms, change your life goals and decrease your tolerance of stress. Say
quite openly, "I can"t manage that. "
4._____
"If only I were slimmer, more beautiful, richer, more clever, then I would be happier. " This is a dream
that makes a lot of people ill, depressed, and unhappy. Life has its flaws, defects, comets, and edges.
Only those who accept this reality can lead a really full life.
Of course there are activities in which errors are dangerous; driving a car, crossing the road. But life
doesn"t consist entirely of these things. In among them there is a lot of room for small and large mistakes.
5. _____
Successful people ail have their own places where they can withdraw in order to work. Find out
which places improve your creativity. For me it"s the train. When I know that I"m going to be traveling
for four hours without phone calls and people knocking on my door, I find my mind is free and I can
read or write complex articles. There can be problems working on the train, of course: if the person
sitting opposite you keeps talking away, or if train trips make you tired (some people fall asleep after a
few miles).

阅读理解Below is a passage adapted from the network edition of China Daily.
                                                                       Event
Li Yang, one of China"s most famous English teachers, apologized for beating his American wife more
than a week after she posted photos of her injuries on the web and set off a bomb of criticism.  "I
wholeheartedly apologize to my wife Kim and my girls for committing domestic violence. This has caused
them serious physical and mental damage," Li said on his mieroblog at Weibo.com, the country"s most
popular social media site, on Saturday. Li, 42, is a mechanics major but is best known for his "Crazy
English," a popular method of language learning that involves yelling at the top of one"s lungs.  He was at
the center of public criticism after his wife Kim Lee put up posts on the web accusing him of abuse,
showing her swollen forehead and knees.
                                                                    Voices
@Xuemanzi, angel investor  Anti-domestic violence laws should be made as soon as possible, giving
protection to the rights of women and children lawfully. Police should not stand back from domestic
violence any longer, even if no one reports them. Society, as a whole, should attach greater importance to
the crime.  @Zhangxiaomei  Chinese are never taught about marital(婚姻的) relations, which mean not
merely living together. A good marriage needs to overcome three differences: family background, gender
and personalities. In addition to these, there is cultural gap in Li Yang"s case. If the effects of these
differences are not well understood, after the honeymoon period, they will turn into conflicts and endanger
the marriage. Li"s domestic violence is a reminder that China needs such education.  @Wuxiaolong,
Sina Weibo user  Li Yang"s choice to resort to domestic violence really reflects his character. Students
who have attended his Crazy English Camp may know what I mean: Li wants his students to worship him
as an idol. I still remember he once had his students kowtow to him. He always teaches English by
imposition(权威强制), which directly reflects his desire for power.  @Sikaozhe, Sina Weibo user  In the US, the punishments for domestic violence are even more severe than strealing. If the police arrive at the
wife"s call during a fighting between a couple nd find injuries on her, they will immediately arrest the
husband. Even if the wife doesn"t call the police, they may also show up as neighbors could well do their
part.  @ykxin Sina Weibo User  Don"t blindly worship anyone, because in every closet there may hide
a skeleton. As a famous Chinese saying goes, "Only they who do well in their daily routine tasks can
fulfills their dreams on great occasions". Not surprisingly, one who focuses too much on his career and
ignores his family, like Li Yang, will fail in both. Don"t judge a person by his career success, wealth, or
any other material aspect, because what finally decides a person is his character.
                                                             Aftermath(余波)
Although Li Yang publicly apologized to his wife, promising to love his daughters even if he and Lee
divorce, the damage, perhaps permanently, has been done to his wife, his three daughters and the whole
family.  Wang Xingjuan, founder of the Maple Women"s Psychological Consulting Center, a non-profit
organization, said nearly half of domestic violence abusers are people who have higher education, senior
jobs and social status. She said this was probably because such people were usually under more mental
stress.1. This passage is focused on Li Yang"s           .A. English-teaching career
B. international marriage
C. microblog article
D. domestic violence2. Zhangxiaomei holds the view that           .A. laws should be passed to protect women and children
B. crazy personality accounts for violence and ill temper
C. overcoming background gap is necessary for marriage
D. Li is wrong to have his students worship him as an idol3. Who thinks that character plays the most important role in one"s life?A. @Xuemanzi
B. @Wuxiaolon
C. @Sikaozhe
D. @ykxin4. According to Wang Xingjuan,        .A. people under stress lend to have domestic violence
B. people of higher education won"t easily lose temper
C. people in lower social status often beat their wives
D. people with senior jobs seldom have family trouble

Half of the world"s population is affected by Asian monsoons(季风), but monsoons are difficult to
predict. American researchers have put together a 700-year record of the rainy seasons, which is
expected to provide guidance for experts making weather predictions.
Every year, moist (潮湿的)air masses, known as monsoon, produce large amounts of rainfall in India,
East Asia, Northern Australia and East Africa. All this wet air is pulled in by a high pressure area over the
Indian Ocean and a low pressure area to the south.
According to Edward Cook , a weather expert at Columbia University in New York., the complex
nature of the climate systems across Asia makes monsoons hard to predict. In addition, climate records
for the area are too recent and not detailed enough to be of much use. Therefore, he and a team of
researchers spent more than fifteen years traveling across Asia, looking for trees old enough to provide
long-term records. They measured the rings, or circles, inside thousands of ancient trees in more than
300 places.
Rainfall has a direct link to the growth and width of rings on some kinds of trees. The researchers
developed a document they are calling a Monsoon Asia Drought Atlas. It shows the effect of monsoons
over seven centuries, beginning in the 1300s.
Professor Cook says the tree-ring records show periods of wet and dry weather. "If the monsoon
basically fails or is a very weak one, the trees affected by monsoons at that location might put on a very
narrow ring. But if the monsoon is very strong, the trees affected by that monsoon might put on a wide
ring for that year. So, the wide and narrow ring widths of the chronology that we developed in Asia
provide us with a measure of monsoon variability." With all this information, researchers say they can
begin to improve computer climate models for predicting the behavior of monsoons.
"There has been widespread famine and starvation and human dying in the past in large droughts.
And on the other hand, if the monsoon is particularly heavy, it can cause extensive flooding." said Eugene Wahl, a scientist with America"s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "So, to get a sense
of what the regional moisture patterns have been, dryness and wetness over such a long period of time
in great detail, I would call it a kind of victory for climate science."

阅读理解     The "aha moment"(顿悟时刻) for Arjun Nagendran came one recent afternoon while he was cleaning up the muddy paw prints, and his pet dog, Rocky, was tracking across the house "again".
"Why not make shoes for dogs?" the 10-year-old boy thought. For most kids, the moment might have
ended right here.
But for Arjun and five of his classmates from Littleton School, an accidental idea proved
talent when they won first place at the first-ever Student Inventors Day at the Liberty Science Center in
Jersey City. The winning invention, "Green Paws"-an eco-friendly dog shoe made from bark, three leaves and recycled rubber-got the group a $1,000 prize, two television appearances and a shot at being the
next "As Seen on TV" hit product.
More than 20 schools, most of them from New Jersey, gathered at the center to show their green
inventions. Each team had 10 minutes to introduce their inventions to the judges. In the end, the chief
judge Khubani announced that it was the Green Paws product that stood out, particularly because his
company had been looking into the very idea of how to keep paws clean.
Pet products are usually popular sellers, he said, noting that his company has marked four new pet
inventions this year alone. And while his senior managers had put forward the idea of new paw wipes,
they had never thought of pet shoes, he said.
"We thought about cleaning pets" paws, but we never thought about keeping them clean in the first
place." Khubani said after the event. "They actually have an idea that is marketable." The company will
begin conducting market research on Green Paws this week, he said. But Arjun and his team will have to
put off another day before they receive congratulations from their classmates.1.What is the direct reason for Arjun"s inventing "Green Paws"?A. That his school inspired students to join in the invention competition
B. That Khubani"s company invited him and his classmates to invent it
C. That his pet dog made the floor dirty with dirty paws
D. That his parents encouraged him to be a great inventor2.The underlined sentence in Paragraph2 may mean ____________.A. not all children are talented because of IQ
