阅读理解Dear Economist,
My newlywedded wife and I are deeply in love. There is, however, one issue that threatens the
happiness of our marriage. I absolutely insist on shopping at Walmart. My  wife, meanwhile, would
rather  avoid Walmart at all costs. I have recently tried to convince her that not only does Walmart
offer the lowest prices known to man, but that the chain is also a force for good-lower prices mean
better standards of living for all consumers, increased global trade means a tighterknit(紧密团结的)
international community, and efficient operations translate into higher productivity growth for the
economy. My wife complains about poor labour policies, the fact that Walmart squeezes suppliers,
and that it puts local shops out of business.
Who is right? Will our marriage survive?
     Brian Gee
     Dear Brian,
I have to agree with you about Walmart. Jason Furman, then an economist at New York University,
now an adviser to President Obama, famously argued in 2005 that Walmart was unwittingly (不知不觉地) a  progressive success story. The chain"s prices don"t much affect me(I prefer Whole Foods)but
Furman estimated  that they benefited lowandmiddleincome Americans to  the sum of around $250
billion a year.
Walmart does not pay much, so it may depress  wages. Then again, it may increase wages by
offering jobs to the otherwise-unemployed. Either way, the benefits of low prices to Walmart shoppers
far outweigh any seemingly reasonable costs to Walmart employees. And while it is true that Walmart
employees tend to be poor, the same is true of Walmart shoppers.
Armed with this information you can face your wife with confidence. You are sure to win the
conversation. The divorce is likely to be more argued.

                                                  Making Peace with Your Parents
As a teen, you"re going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are expanding.      1
Here is the challenge:Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them
from the dangers in that world. These conflicts can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses.
Sometimes conflicts can"t be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful
relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents.
For instance, try to find a time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, distracted or hungry.
A good time to talk is when you"re all relaxed. Timing is everything. If the conversation begins to turn into
an argument, you"d better calmly and coolly ask to stop the conversation-for now.     2      Listen  to
what  your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. This shows them that you"re listening.     3
Respect is the building block of good communication. People who respect each other and care about
each others" feelings can disagree without things getting ugly.
4   How do you build trust? Trust comes by actually doing what you say you"re going to do. Some
t eens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometimes we forget
that parents are more than rulemakers-they"re interesting people who like to watch movies and go
shopping-just like their teenagers!
What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be
rocky?    5   You can find supportive adults, such as a teacher or a coach, who can lend an ear.
Remember you can only change your own behavior. Your parents are the only ones who can change
theirs.

A. It also gives them a chance to clear things up if    you"re not on the same page.
B. You can pick it up again when everyone"s more relaxed.
C. And then you"ll be able to accept what your parents say.
D. Faced with the challenge, children don"t know what to do.
E. You are more likely to get along with your parents and have more independence if your parents
     believe  in you.
F. And your desire to take control of your own life is growing.
G. You may consider seeking outside help

Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in October as a day to make someone happy. It is
an occasion(时候)which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, the aged, and
children who have lost their parents, but also friends, workmates, relatives and neighbors whose
helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.
Over 60 years ago, when a Cleveland man noticed that some people, such as children who lost their
parents and patients who lay in bed, too often felt forgotten and neglected, he developed in his mind the
idea of showing them that they were remembered. He did this by giving them small gifts. With the help of
his friends and neighbors, he gave those people small gifts on a Saturday in October. During the years that followed, other Clevelanders began to take part in the celebration, which came to be called "Sweetest
Day". Over time, the Sweetest Day idea of spreading cheer to the poor, the sick and children who had lost their parents was broadened to include everyone, and became an occasion for remembering others with a kind act or a small gift. Soon the idea spread to other cities all over the USA.
Sweetest Day is not based on any single group"s religious beliefs or on a family relationship. It is a
reminder that a thoughtful word or deed enriches life and gives it meaning.
Because for many people remembering takes the form of gift giving, Sweetest Day offers us the
opportunity to show others that we care, in a positive way.

A. Sweetest Day is a day to make others happy.
B. Sweetest Day is just an occasion to care about disabled people.

2. What is Cleveland?

A. They give money.
