Making an apology is not the same as making amends.Sometimes we apologize just because it"s the
easiest thing to do.What"s actually important is to identify where we go wrong, take full responsibility for
our mistakes and, if possible, try to make up for them.
A recent case involving HewlettPacked, the US computer giant, shows the importance of presenting a
sincere apology. The Chinese consumers who had bought notebook computers of certain models, which
have been put on Chinese market since 2007, suffered a massive flash screen failures and overheating
problems.Through investigation, Chinese AQSIQ (国家质检总局) identified these HP computers had
quality problems and HP admitted this.HP made a proposal that they would extend the warranty period of such computers, but this could not satisfied the consumers. What they needed was a thorough description
of the truth.HP has "sincerely" apologized. But the consumers remain angry, and say that only a product
recall-as HP has done in the past-will prove that the apology is sincere.
Another apology that fell flat on its face was that of Thierry Henry, the famous French footballer. His
deliberate handball in November 2009 created the goal which knocked Ireland out of the 2010 World
Cup.The incident caused great anger in the football world, and eventually Henry issued an apology. Two
days later, he wrote, "I"m not the referee...but if I hurt someone I"m sorry." Better late than never, perhaps, but even then he passed the blame onto the referee!
Such highprofile cases, which attract a lot of publicity are often under the spotlight, but similar incidents occur in our everyday lives.Stress caused by schoolwork and tiredness can sometimes result in outbursts
of anger against friends and family.Have you ever lost your temper for minor reasons? After calming down, most people are quick to realize their mistake and apologize. But it"s just as important to identify what
caused the error in the first place and take action to ensure it doesn"t happen again.
No one should hold a negative attitude to making a sincere apology.Empty words are easy to say, but
they are as useless as they sound.A real show of remorse demands hard work and commitment to put
error right.
1. What does the author intend to tell us in the case of HP?
A. A true apology needs sincere actions.
B. HP should recall all the faulty computers.
C. Good quality makes a good company.
D. A company should apologize and pay for their mistakes.
2. According to the author, when we do anything wrong we firstly ________.
A. make an apology face to face honestly
B. admit we were wrong and try to make the wrong right
C. take the responsibility for apologizing to others
D. choose the easiest thing to do
3. We can infer from the case of Thierry Henry that ________.
A. it"s never too late to say "I"m sorry."
B. writing an apology is not a good idea
C. Henry didn"t identify his fault
D. the football fans were mad with Henry
4. Which of the following can best explain the word "commitment" in the last paragraph?
A. Decision.
B. Promise.
C. Agreement.
D. Responsibility.
5. What"s the best title of this passage?
A. What Really Puts Things Right
B. Don"t Apologize Easily
C. Making an Apology-No One Is out of Exception
D. How to Judge an Apology-Sincere Enough?

With large and small keyboards everywhere, neither children nor adults need to write much of
anything by hand. That"s a big problem.Study after study suggests that handwriting is important for brain
development-helping kids get fine motor skills and learn to express and create ideas.Yet the time devoted
to teaching penmanship (书法) in most schools has shrunk to just one hour a week.Is it time to give up
handwriting? Have a look at the link between the brain and penmanship, and you may get the answer.
A test among students in grades 2, 4 and 6 found that they not only wrote faster by hand than by
keyboard, but also created more ideas when composing essays with handwriting. And other research
shows that the finger movements required to write by hand activate brain areas involved with thought,
language, and shortterm memory.
A recent Indiana University study had one group of children practice writing letters by hand while a
second group just looked at those letters. Then, both groups of kids entered a functional MRI (核磁共
振) that scanned their brains as the researchers showed them the same letters.Researchers found that the
brain activity in the first group was far more advanced and "adultlike".
Handwriting also affects other people"s way they think of adults and children.Several studies have shown
that the same average essay will score much higher if written with good penmanship and much lower if
written out in poor handwriting. These studies have also found that people judge the quality of a person"s
ideas based on his or her handwriting. And the consequences are real: On standardized tests with
handwritten sections, like the SAT, all essay that is considered hard to recognize gets a big zero.
Studies show that this isn"t only an Englishlanguage phenomenon.Chinese and Japanese youths are
suffering from "character amnesia". They can"t remember how to write characters, thanks to computers
and text messaging. Some experts fear that Chinese writing and reading are so closely linked in the brain
that China"s reading ability as a nation could suffer.

1. According to the passage, it can be learned that ________.

A. many researches have been done on handwriting
B. essays can"t be composed without handwriting
C. all children write faster by keyboard than by hand
D. most schools are trying to teach more handwriting

2. What does the Indiana University study imply?

A. Children should practice writing letters.
B. Handwriting can increase brain activity.
C. It"s good for children to enter a functional MRI.
D. Letters should often be shown to children.

3. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?

A. Handwriting affects both adults and children.
B. Handwriting helps a person write better essays.
C. SAT should be done with good handwriting.
D. Good handwriting makes a person seem smarter.

4. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Essays written with keyboards will get lower scores.
B. The quality of your ideas depends on your handwriting.
C. Chinese and Japanese youths don"t know how to write.
D. Less handwriting may affect China"s reading ability.

5. The passage tries to tell us that ________.

A. keyboards are more popular than handwriting
B. we shouldn"t judge people by their handwriting
C. handwriting is of great importance
D. it"s time to give up using keyboards

Throughout the history of the arts, the nature of creativity has remained constant to artists. No matter
what objects they select, artists are to bring forth new forces and forms that cause change-to find poetry
where no one has ever seen or experienced it before.
Landscape (风景) is another unchanging element of art.It can be found from ancient times through the
17thcentury Dutch painters to the 19thcentury romanticists and impressionists. In the 1970s Alfred Leslie,
one of the new American realists, continued this practice.Leslie sought out the same place where Thomas Cole, a romanticist, had produced paintings of the same scene a century and a half before.Unlike Cole
who insists on a feeling of loneliness and the idea of finding peace in nature, Leslie paints what he actually
sees.In his paintings, there is no particular change in emotion, and he includes ordinary things like the
highway in the background. He also takes advantage of the latest developments of color photography(摄
影术) to help both the eye and the memory when he improves his painting back in his workroom.
Besides, all art begs the ageold question: What is real? Each generation of artists has shown their
understanding of reality in one form or another. The impressionists saw reality in brief emotional effects,
the realists in everyday subjects and in forest scenes, and the CroMagnon cave people in their naturalistic
drawings of the animals in the ancient forests. To sum up, understanding reality is a necessary struggle for
artists of all periods.
Over thousands of years the function of the arts has remained relatively constant.Past or present,
Eastern or Western, the arts are a basic part of our immediate experience. Many and different are the
faces of art, and together they express the basic need and hope of human beings.

1. The underlined word "poetry" most probably means ________.

A. an object for artistic creation
B. a collection of poems
C. an unusual quality
D. a natural scene

2. Leslie"s paintings are extraordinary because ________.

A. they are close in style to works in ancient times
B. they look like works by 19thcentury painters
C. they draw attention to common things in life
D. they depend heavily on color photography

3. What is the author"s opinion of artistic reality?

A. It will not be found in future works of art.
B. It does not have a longlasting standard.
C. It is expressed in a fixed artistic form.
D. It is lacking in modern works of art.

4. What does the author suggest about the arts in the last paragraph?

A. They express people"s curiosity about the past.
B. They make people interested in everyday experience.
C. They are considered important for variety in form.
D. They are regarded as a mirror of the human situation.

5. Which of the following is the main topic of the passage?

A. History of the arts.
B. Basic questions of the arts.
C. New developments in the arts.
D. Use of modern technology in the arts.
