can"t even remember what happened.
In the past nine years, I"ve seen her twice, and each time we"ve been polite but distant. And that
troubles me because we were once close friends. I"d like nothing more than to go back nine years, and
continue our friendship. But how? How do you reconnect with friends you"ve lost throughout the years?
Linking to your past
The desire to reconnect with lost friends isn"t unusual. Why? Because friends link us to the past.
"Friends from years ago are custodians(监护人)of our past," says Sandy Sheehy, author of Connecting: The Enduring Power of Female Friendship.
Although you can share information about your past with friends you"ve met recently, you don"t have
a shared history with them. So you wind up only telling them about your past, rather than sharing it with
them.
But many people never try to reconnect. Women especially have trouble taking that first step. Shynes
s or fear that the other person doesn"t want to reconnect often stops many women. And that shouldn"t
be. Your friends probably want to be in touch with you as much as you want to be in touch with them.
Searching for friends
Fortunately, finding lost friends isn"t as difficult as it once was, thanks to tools like the Internet. Our
experts offer these suggestions for locating contact information:
*Search Internet sites designed to locate people like classmates.com and switchboard.com.
*Contact your high school or college alumni(校友)office to request current address information.
*Surf online yellow pages. Check current phone records from your friend"s hometown.
*Network with other friends who might have known your friend.
*Get in touch with any of her relatives, if you know where they live. If you know where she works,
find the company"s web site and search the directory of personnel.

1 Our ancestors performed body painting during special occasions. However, they did not use
paints like the ones sold in stores today. They used natural paints to do body painting. Today, body
painting is still being practised, and it is very popular in Western countries. However, back in the 1960"s,
the social acceptability of this art form was always in question. 2
When body painting, you do not just use any kind of paint. 3 Artists should only use paints that can
be easily washed off with water and ordinary soap. So, now you know something about body painting. If
you want to practise body painting, you can join in certain classes. 4 A friend or even a family member will do, but it is much easier if you practise in a class because you do not have to worry about finding a
model.
Body painting is a special kind of art that requires years of practice before you can become an expert
in the field. 5 The Internet can provide you with all the resources you need. You simply have to spend
enough time doing research and studying all of the information that you need to know.
Your mind should also be free so that you can create a beautiful work of art. In time, you will be
ready to join in the festival for body painting, where your skills can be recognized by people all over the
world.
A. No wonder, body painting is a popular kind of visual art now.
B. While you are studying it, you have to continue to do research.
C. For beginners, you should practise body painting with someone that you are comfortable with.
D. Body painting can transform a person into a spirit, a work of art, or even a map of a place.

F. There is one main rule for body painting - the paints should be harmless.
G. In fact, experts have had endless discussions about it.
Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they
relieve these experiences in nightmares.
Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget
bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope
it might reduce ,or possibly erase(抹去),the effect of painful memories.
In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body
releasing(释放)chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the
emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased.
The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, While others support
it.
Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers" troubling memories after war. They
say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.
"Some memories can ruin people"s lives . They come back to you when you don"t want to have them
in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions," said Roger Pitman, a
professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. "This could relieve a lot of that suffering."
But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because
memories give us our identity (特质). They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.
"All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are.
I"m not sure we want to wipe those memories out, "said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.

Rodney Mace, 35, is married with two young children, and is a part-time teacher of history, "I am
constantly surprised by other people"s surprise, when they come to the house and see me cleaning a
floor or hanging out the washing. Their eyes open wide at the sight of it! Much of the comment comes
form men. But I am even more surprised at the number of women who comment too."
His wife Jane, an Oxford graduate in modern languages, has a demanding full-time job. She is director
of the Cambridge House literacy scheme(扫盲计划) for adults in South London. Her working week
involves several evenings and Saturdays, and at these times her husband is in charge of home and family.
Apart from this, they share household jobs and employ a child-minder for the afternoons. This enables
him to teach two days a week and to do what he considers his principal work: writing. He has written
several books and spends much of his time in the Museum Reading Room, cycling there from his home
in Brixton.
People ask the Maces if they think their children miss them. One can argue that satisfied parents
generally have satisfied children, but in any case the Maces are careful to spare time and energy to play
with their children. "And they have now developed relationships with other adults and children.
Before, Rodney Mace worked full-time and Jane only part-time. Then 18 months ago, the director
of the literacy scheme left. "It seems to me that Jane was very well suited to do this job. She was very
doubtful about it. But I asked her to apply. She did, and she got it." Jane Mace says that she needed
this encouragement, as so many women do.
Did his male ego(男性自我意识) suffer from the change-over? Nothing like that occurred. But he
still seems amazed at the way it changed his thinking. "I felt that we were finally going to be partners. I
felt enormous relief. I wasn"t avoiding responsibility, but changing it. Our relationship is so much better
now. It has been a change for the good for both of us-think for all of us, in every aspect of our lives. I
cannot overemphasize(过高强调) that: in every aspect, I think it is necessary that the woman works.

People traveling long distances frequently have to decide whether they would prefer to go by land,
sea or air. Hardly anyone can positively enjoy sitting in a train for more than a few hours. Train carriages
soon get full of passengers and stuffy. It is almost impossible to take your mind off the journey. Reading
is only a partial solution, for the noise of the wheels clicking on the rails soon makes you sleepy. During
the day, sleep comes in short periods. At night, when you really want to go to sleep, you can rarely
manage to do so. Surely you arrive at your destination almost worn out. Long car journeys are even less
pleasant, for it is quite impossible even to read. On motorways you can, at least, travel fairly safely at high
speeds, but more often than not, the greater part of the journey is spent on roads with few service stations and too much traffic. By comparison, ferry trips or cruises offer a great variety of civilized comforts. You
can stretch your legs on the spacious decks, play games, meet interesting people and enjoy delicious
food-always assuming, of course, that the sea is calm. If it is not, and you are likely to get seasick, no
form of transport could be worse. Even if you travel in ideal weather, sea journeys take a long time.
Airplanes have the reputation of being unsafe and even hardened travelers are afraid of them. They
also have the disadvantages of being an expensive form of transport. But nothing can match them for
speed and comfort. Traveling at a height of 30,000 feet, far above the clouds, and at over 500 miles an
hour is a very exciting experience. You do not have to think out ways of taking your mind off the journey,
for an airplane gets you to your destination rapidly. For a few hours, you settle back in a deep armchair
to enjoy the flight. The real enjoyment is to watch a film and drink wine on some services. But even when
these things are not available, there is plenty to keep you occupied. A plane offers you an unusual and
breathtaking view of the world. The journey is so smooth that there is nothing to prevent you from reading or sleeping. No matter how you decide to spend your time, one thing is certain: you will arrive at your
destination fresh and energetic. You do not have to spend the next few days recovering from a long and
arduous journey.
