Chinese New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It falls on different dates each
year, between January 21 and February 20. Visits to friends and family take place during this celebration. The
color gold is said to bring wealth, and the color red is considered especially lucky. The New Year"s Eve dinner
is very large and includes fish, noodles, and dumplings.
B. Christmas
Christmas is celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas in the United States brings together many
customs from other countries and cultures. Around the world, family members help to decorate the tree and
home with bright lights, wreaths, candles, holly, mistletoe, and ornaments. On Christmas Eve, many people go
to church. Also on Christmas Eve, Santa comes from the North Pole in a sleigh to deliver gifts; in Hawaii, it is
said he arrives by boat; in Australia, the jolly man arrives on water skis; and In Ghana, he comes out of the
jungle.
C. Eid Al Adha, the Festival of the Sacrifice
Eid Al Adha is celebrated by Muslims on the 10th day of the month of the lunar calendar (In 2008, it fell on
December 8) to commemorate the willingness of the prophet Ibrahim (or Abraham) to sacrifice his son for
God. Today, Muslims sacrifice an animal-usually a goat or a sheep-as a reminder of Ibrahim"s obedience to
God. The meat is shared with family, friends Muslims or non-Muslims, as well as the poor members of the
community.
D. Hanukkah
Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah, a holiday honoring the Maccabees victory over King Antiochus, who
forbade Jews to practice their religion. For eight nights, Hanukkah is celebrated with prayer, the lighting of the
menorah, and food. A menorah has nine candles, a candle for every night, plus a helper candle. Children play
games, sing songs, and exchange gifts. Potato pancakes, known as latkes (土豆饼) in Yiddish, are traditionally
associated with Hanukkah and are served with applesauce and sour cream.
E. Kwanzaa
On December 26, Kwanzaa is celebrated. It is a holiday to commemorate African heritage. Kwanzaa lasts
a week during which participants gather with family and friends to exchange gifts and to light a series of black,
red, and green candles, which symbolize the seven basic values of African American family life that are unity,
self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.
F. Three Kings Day
At the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas comes a day called the Epiphany, or Three Kings Day. This
holiday is celebrated as the day the three wise men first saw baby Jesus and brought him gifts. On this day in
Spain, many children get their Christmas presents. In Puerto Rico, before children go to sleep on January 5,
they leave a box with hay under their beds so the kings will leave good presents. In France, a delicious King
cake is baked. Bakers will hide a coin, jewel or little toy inside it.

举一反三
Do I live in a zoo? No, of course not! I am talking about Chinese zodiac signs. Depending on the year of your
birth, each person has an animal for a sign. That"s why I am a pig and my wife is a dragon. If you, like me,
were born in the year of the pig, then you are brave, thoughtful and loyal. The year of the pig is filled with
good fortune.
Now let"s take a closer look at this interesting animal.
Pigs were first raised by man about 9,000 years ago, and are still a very common farm animal in many parts
of the world. We don"t just use pigs for their meat-almost every part of the animal is used. The hair is used for
artists" brushes. The fat is used to make floor wax, rubber and plastics.
Pigs have also been important in the world of entertainment. In 1995 the film "Babe" starred a loveable talking
pig as its main character. The film won an Oscar and was nominated for 6 more. In England you can even go
to watch pig racing. A farmer, Rob Shepherd, has been raising money for charity by holding pig races on his
farm. The events have been very successful. People don"t just want to eat pigs, it seems!
Pigs also play an important role in the English language. For example, if someone says that he will travel to
the sun one day, you can say "pigs might fly!" to him. Hungry? Well then, you can "pig out" and eat lots of food.
And what if someone rescues you? Well, you can say that they "saved your bacon".

mention it often:"Let"s get right to the point." They will say, "My point is…" "What"s the point of all this?"
The "point" is the idea or piece of information that Americans suppose is, or should be, at the center of
people"s thinking, writings, and spoken comments. Speakers and writers are supposed to "make their points
clear", meaning that they are supposed to say or write clearly the idea or piece of information they wish to
express.
People from many other cultures have different ideas about the point. Africans traditionally tell stories
that express the thoughts they have in mind, rather than stating the point clearly. Japanese traditionally speak
indirectly, leaving the listener to figure out what the point is. Thus, while an American might say to a friend,
"I don"t think that coat goes very well with the rest of your outfit," a Japanese might say, "Maybe another
coat would look even better than the one you have on." Americans value a person who "gets right to the point".
Japanese are likely to consider such a person insensitive if not rude.
The Chinese and Japanese languages are characterized by vagueness and ambiguity. The precision and
directness Americans associate with "the point" cannot be achieved, at least not with any grace, in Chinese
and Japanese. Speakers of those languages thus have to learn a new way of reasoning and expressing their
ideas if they are going to communicate satisfactorily with Americans.
B. be clear about their main ideas
C. be honest about their true feelings
D. give as much information as possible
B. Chinese.
C. Japanese.
D. Africans.
B. behavior
C. speech
D. clothes
B. explain their reasons clearly

a Paris pub.
Some Parisians have even started to go to work in London.
In the 19th century, Charles Dickens compared the two great rival cities, London and Paris, in "A Tale of
Two Cities." These days, it might be A Tale of One City.
Parisians are these days likely to smile in sympathy at a visitor"s broken French and respond in polite English.
As jobs grew lack at home over recent years, perhaps 250,000 Frenchmen moved across the Channel. With
an undersea tunnel, they could travel between cities in three hours. The European Union has freed them from
immigration and customs.
Paris, rich in beauty, is more attractive. But London feels more full of life, and more fun until the pubs
close up. "For me, difference is that London is real, alive," said Trevor Wheeler, a banker. Chantal Jaouen,
a professional designer, agrees. "I am French, but I"ll stay in London."She said. There is, of course, the other
view. Julie Lenoux is a student who moved to London two years ago."I think people laugh more in Paris," she
said.
In fact, London and Paris, with their obvious new similarities, are past the old descriptions. As the European
Union gradually loosened controls, Londoners flocked into Paris to shop, eat and buy property.
"Both cities have changed out of recognition." said Larry Collins, a writer and sometimes a Londoner. Like
most people who know both well, he finds the two now fit together comfortably. "I first fell in love with Paris
in the 1950s,and it is still a wonderful place,"Collins said."But if I had to choose, it would be London. Things
are so much more ordered, and life is better."
But certainly not cheaper. In fancy parts of London, rents can be twice those on Avenue Foch in Paris.
Deciding between London and Paris requires a lifestyle choice.
Like Daphne Benoit, a French journalism student with perfect English, many young people are happy to be
close enough so they don"t have to choose. "I love Paris, my little neighborhood, the way I can walk around
a center, but life is so structured," she said. "In London, you can be who you want. No one cares."
B. Fancy London and Fashionable Paris
C. The Similarity of Two cities
D. A modern Tale of Two Cities
B. London feels more full of life

B. flew a long way

understanding of Asian customs, I might be angry when I am called a "laowai". But having lived in the
Philippines and China"s Taiwan Province teaching English for several years, I have come to China with a
different view from most other foreign teachers here. In such situations, I just answer back in standard
Chinese:"Ni zenmo zhidao wo shi waiguoren? (How do you know I"m a foreigner? )" When I hear people
shout out "hello" in a more impolite way and then laugh, I reply in Chinese with "Ni de yingyu bi wo de hao.
(Your English is better than mine.)"
Speaking Chinese is a way of living an easier life in China. As an English teacher at Hubei University in
Wuhan, I was once invited by a student to spend the weekend with his family. Because I can speak Chinese
quite freely, I was able to talk with my student"s entire family. From my personal experience, I knew that the
Chinese have a "gift" for making foreigners in China feel right at home. That fun-filled weekend I spent with
my student"s family in Caidian, a small suburb of Wuhan, just showed that my idea was right.
It was an experience I will never forget.
Americans have a saying: If you can"t beat them, then join them. The secret to feeling at home with the
Chinese people isn"t to try to make them change over to Western ways. The secret is to become one of them.
Just go with the flow, or don"t take things too seriously. In this way you will surely feel at home in China.
If you no longer emphasize (强调) our differences from the Chinese, you will be more willing to
concentrate on what "big noses" and "small noses" have in common.
B. curious
C. rude
D. brave
B. the author isn"t angry
C. the author really think so
D. the author likes to speak Chinese
B. The author can speak Chinese very well.
C. The author doesn"t mind being called a "laowai".
D. The author is difficult to get along with.
B. when in Rome, do as the Romans do
C. flow with the river
D. take things easy
museums" that are opening today, however, perform quite a different role. Unlike most art museums, the
design museum shows objects that are easily found by the general public. These museums sometimes even
place things like fridges and washing machines in the center of the hall.
People have argued that design museums are often made use of as advertisements for new industrial
technology. But their role is not simply a matter of sales-it is the honoring of excellently invented products.
The difference between the window of a department store and the showcase in a design museum is that the
first tries to sell you something, while the second tells you the success of a sale.
One advantage of design museums is that they are places where people feel familiar with the exhibits.
Unlike the average art museum visitors, design museum visitors seldom feel frightened or puzzled (困惑).
This is partly because design museums clearly show how and why mass-produced products work and look
as they do, and how design has improved the quality of our lives. Art museum exhibits, on the other hand,
would most probably fill visitors with a feeling that there is something beyond their understanding.
In recent years, several new design museums have opened their doors. Each of these museums has tried
to satisfy the public"s growing interest in the field with new ideas. London"s Design Museum, for example,
shows a collection of mass-produced objects from Zippo lighters to electric typewriters to a group of Italian
fish-tins. The choices open to design museums seem far less strict than those to art museums, and visitors
may also sense the humorous (幽默的) part of our society while walking around such exhibits as interesting
and unusually attractive toys collected in our everyday life.
B. help increase the sales of products
C. show why the products have sold well
D. attract more people than store windows do
B. are puzzled with technological exhibits
C. dislike exhibits in art museums
D. know the exhibits very well
B. are not aimed to interest the public
C. may fail to bring some pleasure to visitors
D. often contain precious exhibits
B. The exhibits of design museums
C. The nature of design museums
D. The choices open to design museums
