is a doll, but Barbie illustrates how, over the last five decades, women have become a standard for
judging what freedom really means. How women are treated in different countries tells you a lot
about the politics and culture of where they live.
The doll that every little girl wants enables young children to test their possibilities in role
playing, giving them a glimpse of what they might be when they grow up,whether to be frivolous
or serious (or both).
But in many countries that"s not an option. In Saudi Arabia, where woman can"t drive or go out
publicly unless covered,Barbie is banned. They think Barbie dolls are offensive to Islam (伊斯兰教)
and a threat to morality.
In America, she represents the swiftly changing roles of women. Barbie is fun to tease but she"s
as American as miniskirts_and_pantsuits in her flexible identities and her "growth" from model to
astronaut.
Barbie inspired a dollrevolution movement. When a Teen Talk Barbie was programmed
electronically to say "Math class is tough",she was criticized by a national women"s group and
was regarded as a bad stereotype. Some of her critics also say she has a bad influence because
she"s too thin and encourages anorexia, that she has run through too many stereotypes, and that
she lends too much significance to the fantasy stages of child"s play.
In some Muslim countries, substitute Barbie dolls have been developed that promote traditional
values, with their modest clothing and profamily backgrounds. They are widely seen as an effort to
resist the American dolls that have flooded the market.
Toyseller Masounmen Rahimi welcomed the dolls, saying Barbie was "foreign to Muslim culture"
because some of the dolls have little clothing. She said young girls who play with Barbie could grow
into women who reject Muslim values. "I think every Barbie doll is more harmful than an American
missile(导弹)." Ms Rahimi said.

easily imagine that the story of its construction was simply a fairy tale. Three hundred years ago,
there lived an Indian emperor called Shah Jahan. His wife was a beautiful and bright woman
whom he loved greatly. Her title was Mumtazl Mahan: its shortened form Taj Mahan, means
“pride of the palace”. In the year 1630 this beloved wife of the emperor died. He was so
broken hearted that he thought of giving up his throne. He decided out of his love for his wife,
to build her the most beautiful tomb that had ever been seen.
He summoned the best artists and architects from India, Turkey, Persia and Arabia and
finally, the design was completed. It took more than twenty thousand men working over a
period of 18 years to build the Taj Mahan, one of the most beautiful building in the world.
The building itself stands on a marble. Platform 29 meters square and 6---7 meters high.
Towers rise from each of the four comers. The Taj itself soars another 61 meters into the air.
It is a eight-sided building made of white marble.
The emperor planned to build an identical tomb of black marble for himself on the other
side of the river connected by a silver bridge. However his son put him into a prison in the
palace before he could finish, and for the rest of his life, he could only gaze across river at the
tomb of his beloved wife.

On one side, the label(标签) says "peas" . On the other, it says "petit pois". By law food labels
and many other printed notices in Canada must be in two languages---English and French.
The reason is simple: many Canadians speak English but not French. Others speak French
but not English. By requiring that label be printed in both languages, Canada is trying to ease
the problems of living in a bilingual society.
English is the dominant (important) language in most of Canada. In all provinces but Quebec,
most of the people speak English. Quebec was the center of French settlement in colonial
(殖民地的) times, and most of its people are descendants (后裔) of French settlers. Today
nearly two out of three people in Quebec speak only French. Communities of French-speaking
people also live in other provinces, especially in the Maritime Provinces.
French Canadians are bound (约束) together not only by language but also by religion. Like
their French ancestors (祖先), most are Roman Catholics. Most English-speaking Canadians are
Protestants.

Mosquito is being used in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New York to keep kids from
gathering in big groups and causing trouble.
The Mosquito makes a noise that only kids can hear. About 3,000 Mosquito units have
been fixed in the United Kingdom. In the United States, managers of an apartment building
in New York City recently fixed one to keep noisy kids from taking over the building"s
entrance-hall. A children"s rights agency (机构) in England wants the device forbidden. The
agency says the device unfairly targets teens. Some also worry that the high sounds could hurt
young ears. Fans of the Mosquito say it keeps kids out of trouble and off private property (财产).
"Mosquito devices violate the human rights of kids. The use of the devices is targeted at kids
because it considers all kids as troublemakers. The devices are also harmful because the noise
could hurt kids" hearing. Besides violating our rights, the Mosquito is dangerous. It could hurt
the ears and the hearing of teens, babies and animals because they are more sensitive," says
California eighth grader Kelly Straky. "It is not right to place the device in a public place.
Teenagers have as much right to public places as adults. I listened to the Mosquito sound, and
it was extremely loud. It hurts not only your ears but also your whole head. It isn"t just annoying;
it"s painful. It should not be allowed."
Fans of the Mosquito believe that property owners have a right to decide who can be on their
property and who cannot. Mosquito devices are a method of protecting private property and
keeping the peace. Property laws are put into place to protect the public.
"Yes, I do believe that the rights of teens should be valued, but we must always put ourselves
in other people"s shoes and see the other side. In this case, doing so allows people to understand
the negative effects, such as crime, that loitering (滞留) can have on an area or a community,"
said Kayla Hill from New York.

They occupy 1 km from east to west, and hold 53 caves and over 51,000 stone statues.
As excellent examples of rock-cut architecture(建筑学), in 2001, the Yungang Grottoes
became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to UNESCO, they are a masterpiece
of early Chinese Buddhist(佛教的) cave art.
During the Northern Wei Dynasty, Pingcheng, now called Datong, was made capital city,
and Buddhism was treated as state religion. Through the ancient North Silk Road, Buddhism
arrived in Pingcheng (Datong). The Yungang Grottoes absorbed Indian Buddhist art, and
combined with traditional Chinese art. They were China"s first major stone carved grottoes,
and have a history of over 1,500 years. During the rule of Emperor Xiao Wen in Northern
Wei Dynasty (386-534), a monk named Tanyao was responsible for the construction of the
Yungang Grottoes. The most important work on the grottoes was completed during 460 to
the early 490s. The move of the Northern Wei capital from Pingcheng (Datong) to Luoyang
in 494 ended the construction and carving. Some repairs continued during the Sui and Tang
dynasties, and important restorations (修复) were carried out in the 11th and 12th centuries.
The Yungang Grottoes include a variety of vivid religious figures. Moreover, there are a
lot of different shaped wooden constructions, statues of the Buddhist story, and carvings of
ancient musical instruments.

The world is getting smaller and smaller, but gaps between people have always existed and
will continue to exist for the foreseeable future. Different sets of cultures, belief systems and
values have shaped today"s world. To avoid misunderstandings, we need to learn not only
other languages, but the cultures behind the languages as well. To understand English-speaking
people, we first need to understand their culture, history and way of life. British and American
Culture Reader will give students a good general idea of life and culture in the United Kingdom
and the United States.
The articles in this series vividly describe the structure of Western society from the
perspectives (视角) of ordinary people - and their own experiences of life. As an American
living in the United Kingdom, I am in a better position to know what"s best about American
culture through the eyes of my British friends. Actually, all the articles in this series are written
by native English speakers who have lived in the West for a significant period. This ensures
that the text presents an accurate picture of life in the English-speaking world.
As a children"s publisher, I know that young students in particular need lively lessons that
will engage their curiosity and desire to learn. Therefore, topics have been carefully chosen to
include those of greatest relevance to children, including games, schools, clothes and festivals.
The series also provides an interesting contrast of British and American culture, which gives
young Chinese readers an insight into the differences between them and therefore enables the
students to better understand the two countries. Being aware that the teacher will pass on the
information to students, the authors have made sure to present the text in a light-hearted and
fun way, with interesting stories inserted where appropriate.
British and American Culture Reader is a reflection of our society. Readers of this series
will shake off the bad stereotypes (旧框框) that they hold about Westerners and may be
surprised to find how similar Westerners" way of life is to their own in many ways. I hope
you enjoy reading the articles as much as I have enjoyed writing them.
