President Barack Obama nominated (提名) Utah governor Jon Huntsman as ambassador (大使) to China on May 16.
Huntsman, 49, is the son of a Utah multimillionaire (千万富翁). He served as ambassador to Singapore under former president George H.W. Bush. In 2004, he became the governor of Utah and was elected for a second term in 2008.
The governor has strong ties to China: He lived in Taiwan when he was a teenager and speaks fluent Chinese. One of his daughters was adopted (收养) from China. His family also has business ties with China through Huntsman Corp, a chemical company. It has operations (动作) in the country including a factory in Shanghai.
Huntsman’s nomination has been met with praise in both countries.
“Jon Huntsman is a well-regarded politician (政治家) in the US…… his experience as ambassador to Singapore and his knowledge of China, plus his wonderful Chinese language skills singled him out from the large number of candidates,” Dai Min, president of the US-based Center for America-China Partnership (中美合作中心), told China Daily.
Obama appointed Huntsman “in order to seek China’s help and cooperation” on several international and regional issues, said Yuan Peng, professor of American Studies at the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations (中国现代国际关系研究院).
Some people say that President Obama’s decision to name John Huntsman is a well thought out political strategy. Huntsman is a big player in the Republican Party, and a possible presidential candidate for 2012. If he really has joined the Obama administration, he has lost that possibility. Now, when Obama kicks off his re-election campaign, “ambassador” Huntsman won’t be a threat.
64.The nomination of Huntsman won praise on both sides for the following reasons EXCEPT that _________.
A. he has business ties with China
B. he can speak Chinese fluently
C. he is a very experienced politician
D. he knows China very well
65.Which of the following facts about Huntsman is NOT true ?
A. He was once ambassador to Singapore.
B. He was elected governor of Utah twice.
C. He has served two presidents as governor.
D. He spent part of his youth in Taiwan.
66.From the last two paragraphs, we can conclude that ____________.
A. Obama considers China America’s top trade partner.
B. By choosing Huntsman, Obama kills two birds with one stone.
C. Huntsman will probably run for president in 2012.
D. Huntsman will settle several international and regional issues.

English may not be a world language forever
While 375 million people around the globe use English as their native language, the number of people using it as a second language has already been well over that figure (数字).
It is said that by the end of 2000, one billion people could use English to communicate with others, including both native speakers and non-native speakers.
“The rise and fall of a language is closely connected with that country’s economic(经济的) strength and development potential (潜力).” Rhodri Jones, the English 2000 manager of the ELT group of the British Council said.
An expert who has given many lectures on the future of English said the economic boots(快速发展)in Asia would raise(提高) the position of the Chinese and Hindi languages. Therefore, the English language is facing a serious problem. Where will English turn in the next fifty years or the century?
The recently introduced book from Britain “Future of English” might give people concerned with their question some enlightenments (启发). The book helps to help English teachers, planners, managers and decision makers with a professional interest in the development of English worldwide.
With the book translated into Chinese and to be published soon, the book might be brought to wider sphere (范围)of people.
“From the book, we learn many facts about the English language, and we may be able to predict (预测) its future after reading it.” said Dorothy Humphrey, who used to be a senior English teacher for the British Council.

Scientists think that as Africa becomes drier, dust from expanding deserts is being blown away into Caribbean islands. A study in Barbados shows that asthma has increased 17 times since Africa’s drought(干旱) began in 1973.
Other forms of life are suffering, too. Among them are the Caribbean’s famous coral reefs( 珊瑚礁), which began dying in large numbers in the 1900s. Eugene Shinn of the U.S. Geiological Sudrvey(USGS) in Florida went to the virgin Islands to study the reefs. The tests he and his colleagues carried out showed that the coral was dying of disease caused by Africa microbes(微生物) from across the ocean.
William Sprigg of the University of Arizona is studying the problem as part of a major UN project. He says that dust is causing problems in the U.S., too.
“We are just beginning to collect the evidence of airborne(空气传播的) dust influences on human health,” he told The Washington Post.

It is hardly surprising that clothing manufacturers (生产商)follow certain uniform standards for various features(特征)of clothes. What seems strange, however, is that the standard adopted for women is the opposite of the one for men. Take a look at the way your clothes button. Men’s clothes tend to button from the right, and women’s from the left. Considering most of the world’s population---men and women---are right-handed, the men’s standard would appear to make more sense for women. So why do women’s clothes button from the left?
History really seems to matter here. Button first appeared only on the clothes of the rich in the 17th century, when rich women were dressed by servants. For the mostly right-handed servants, having women’s shirts button from the left would be easier. On the other hand, having men’s shirts button from the right made sense, too. Most men dressed themselves, and a sword drawn from the left with the right hand would be less likely to get caught in the shirt.
Today women are seldom dressed by servants, but buttoning from the left is still the standard for them. Is it interesting? Actually, a standard, once set, resists change. At a time when all women’s shirts buttoned from the left, it would have been risky for any single manufacture to offer women’s shirts that buttoned the right. After all, women had grown so used to shirts which buttoned from the left and would have to develop new habits and skills to switch. It would be weird for them to button from the right, since anyone who noticed that would believe they were wearing men’s shirts.
小题1:What is surprising about the standard of the clothing industry?
A.It has been followed by the industry for over 400 years. |
B.It is different for men’s clothing and women’s. |
C.It works better with men than with women. |
D.It fails to consider right-handed people. |
A.They tended to wear clothes without buttons. |
B.They were interested in the historical matters. |
C.They were mostly dressed by servants. |
D.They drew their swords from the left. |
A.adopting men’s style is improper for women |
B.manufacturers should follow standards |
C.modern women dress themselves |
D.customs are hard to change |
A.analyzing cause |
B.making comparisons |
C.examining differences |
D.following the time order |
