“It’s not every day you get a Hollywood superstar phoning you when you’re doing the housework,” Crack told The Sun, “It was a moment I’ll never forget.” Hoffman was in the back of a London taxi driven by Crack’s husband, Dave, when he made the call after being told Pamela was a fan. Dave Crack later became the star of Hoffman’s speech at the Bafta award ceremony Sunday, where the 62-year-old American actor presented the Best Film award. “He said to give him a mention,” Hoffman told the audience to a burst of laughter. “Cheers Dave.” Taxi driver Crack said the Hollywood star was a joy to drive from the moment he got into the taxi eating a cheese and tomato sandwich. “I said ‘You’re that Dustin Hoffman, aren’t you?’ and he said, ‘Yes I am—would you like a sandwich?’ I was a bit surprised but I took a sandwich from him and ate it hungrily.” 小题1:How did Dustin Hoffman learn that Pamela was a fan?A.He learned it at a dinner party. | B.He learned it from Dave Crack. | C.He learned it when he was at the Bafta ceremony. | D.He learned it when he was watching a Hollywood movie. | 小题2:What does the underlined word “flabbergasted” in the first paragraph probably mean?A.pleased. | B.honored. | C.frightened. | D.surprised. | 小题3:What was Hoffman doing when he talked about Dave Crack?A.He was riding in a taxi. | B.He was presenting the Best Film award. | C.He was talking to Pamela on the phone. | D.He was eating a cheese and tomato sandwich. | 小题4:Which of the following is the correct order of events mentioned in the article? a. For years, there has been a bias (偏见) against science among clinical psychologists (临床心理学家). In a two-year analysis to be published in November in Perspectives on Psychological Science, psychologists led by Timothy B. Baker of the University of Wisconsin charge that many clinical psychologists fail to “provide the treatments for which there is the strongest evidence of effectiveness” and “give more weight to their personal experiences than to science.” As a result, patients have no guarantee that their “treatment will be informed by … science.” Walter Mischel of Columbia University is even crueler in his judgment. “The disconnect between what clinical psychologists do and what science has discovered is an extreme embarrassment,” he told me, and “there is a widening gap between clinical practice and science.” The “widening” reflects the great progress that psychological research has made in identifying (确认) the most effective treatments. Thanks to strict clinical trials, we now know that teaching patients to think about their thoughts in new, healthier ways and to act on those new ways of thinking are effective against depression, panic disorder and other problems, with multiple trials showing that these treatments — the tools of psychology — bring more lasting benefits than drugs. You wouldn’t know this if you sought help from a typical clinical psychologist. Although many treatments are effective, relatively few psychologists learn or practice them. Why in the world not? For one thing, says Baker, clinical psychologists are “very doubtful about the role of science” and “lack solid science training”. Also, one third of patients get better no matter what treatment (if any) they have, “and psychologists remember these successes, believing, wrongly, that they are the result of the treatment.” When faced with evidence that treatments they offer are not supported by science, clinical psychologists argue that they know better than some study what works. A 2008 study of 591 psychologists in private practice found that they rely more on their own and colleagues’ experience than on science when deciding how to treat a patient. If they keep on this path as insurance companies demand evidence-based medicine, warns Mischel, psychology will “discredit itself.” 小题1:Many clinical psychologists fail to provide the most effective treatments because ________.A.they are unfamiliar with their patients | B.they believe in science and evidence | C.they depend on their colleagues’ help | D.they rely on their personal experiences | 小题2:The widening gap between clinical practice and science is due to _______.A.the cruel judgment by Walter Mischel | B.the fact that most patients get better after being treated | C.the great progress that has been made in psychological research | D.the fact that patients prefer to take drugs rather than have other treatments | 小题3:How do clinical psychologists respond when charged that their treatments are not supported by science?A.They feel embarrassed. | B.They try to defend themselves. | C.They are disappointed. | D.They doubt their treatments. | 小题4:In Mischel’s opinion, psychology will ____.A.destroy its own reputation if no improvement is made | B.develop faster with the support of insurance companies | C.work together with insurance companies to provide better treatment | D.become more reliable if insurance companies won’t demand evidence-based medicine |

April Fool’s Day(愚人节), was a day of laughing and jokes. This day is kept in many countries, not only in Britain and the USA. This is a day to play jokes and make people laugh. Nobody knows when was the beginning of this custom. Some people connect it with the end of winter and the return of spring which make people merry and ready to play jokes. In Scotland young people were sent for hen’s teeth or bird’s milk and everybody laughed when they could find such things. A purse is left lying in the street, but when someone wants to take it, it is quickly pulled back by a string which the hidden joker holds in his hand. Or the purse may be filled with stones. Sometimes invitations are sent to people, asking them to come and visit somebody, but when they come they see that nobody expects them.
