Things have really changed. Not only is the military standing tall again, it is staging a remarkable
comeback in the quantity and quality of the recruits(新兵). Recruits, once denounced by antiwar
students as "baby killers" and barred from (从……扫除)campuses, are welcomed ever at famous
universities. ROTC (美国后备军官训练队) programs that once faltered are flourishing again.
The military academies are enjoying a steady increase in applications.
Certainly, the depressed economy has increased the allure(诱惑) of the jobs, technical training
and generous student loans offered by the military. Students know that if they go in and become,
say, nuclear weapons specialists, they can_come_out_and demand a salary of $60,000 a year.
Military salaries, while not always competitive with those paid for comparable jobs in the private
sector, are more than respectable, especially considering the wide array of benefits that are available:
free medical service, room and board, and PX (Post Exchange) privileges. Monthly pay for a recruit
is $574; for a sergeant with four years" service it is $906; for a major with ten years" service it is
$2,305. The welfare has helped win over the TV generation. Kids are walking down the school
hallways chanting "Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines" . There is a return to the view that the military
is an honorable profession. The days of a judge telling a miscreant to join the Army or go to jail are
over. Recruiting for all four services combined is running at 101%of authorized goals. And the retention
rate is now so high that the services are refusing some reenlistment applications and reducing annual
recruiting target.
The military academics are also enjoying halcyon years, attracting more and betterqualified students.
Compared to private colleges, where tuition and expenses have been climbing sharply, the service
schools are a real bargain: not only is tuition free, but recruits get allowances of up to $500 a month.
It is reported 12,300 applicants are for the 1,450 positions in this year"s freshman class. Military
academies are now just as selective as any of the best universities in the country. Nationwide, ROTC
enrollment exceeds 105,000,a 64% increase over the 1974 figure. In the mid 70"s, the ROTC students
refused to wear their uniforms on campus because they suffered all sorts of ridicule, if they did. Now
if they wear them to class no one looks at them twice.

say keeping a mediumsized dog has the same ecological impact as driving 10,000 km a year in a 4.6 liter
Land Cruiser.
"We"re not actually saying it is time to eat the dog. We"re just saying that we need to think about and
know the ecological impact of some of the things we do and that we take for granted."
Constructing and driving the jeep for a year requires 0.41 hectares of land, while growing and
manufacturing a dog"s food takes about 0.84 hectares-or 1.1 hectares in the case of a large dog such as a German shepherd.
Convincing flesheating cats and dogs to go vegetarian for the sake of the planet is a nonstarter, the Vales say.Instead they recommend keeping "greener",smaller, and more sustainable pets, such as goldfish, chickens or rabbits.
The book"s playful title, and serious suggestion that pet animals may be usefully"recycled",by being eaten by their owners or turned into pet food when they die,may not appeal to animal fans.
Annoying as the idea may be,the question is valid given the planet"s growing population and limited
resources,Robert Vale said.
"Issues about sustainability are increasingly becoming things that are going to require us to make choices which are as difficult as eating your dog. It"s not just about changing your light bulbs or taking a cloth bag to the supermarket,"he said.
"It"s about much more challenging and difficult issues," he added.

events),many of the people you meet will be quiet and polite. Some people may be intolerant, but most will be pleasant and welcoming.Remember that American films and television exaggerate(夸张)in order to
generate excitement, and so present a rather false picture of what life in the United States is really like.
Therefore, tourists in the US are not always on their best behavior.
Americans do tend to be more informal than people from other countries. It is common for Americans
to wear casual clothing to school and to greet professors by first name. However, good manners and
politeness are always appreciated. If you are polite, and dress a little more formally than your American
friends, it will not be poorly thought of.
However, some businesses require their employees to wear a uniform or a suit.It would be improper to wear a Tshirt and blue jeans to a job interview. Some of the more prestigious restaurants require a coat and a tie.Americans tend to dress up for cultural events(the opera, theater and ballet)and to dress down for
athletic events.Formal wear is required at weddings and funerals, or any other event with religion. If you
rely on the stereotypes, you will likely put yourself into an embarrassing situation.

person has, there are many positions available. Of course, he must be realistic in choosing a job. If he has a physical disability, he should look for a job in which he can use his skills and abilities.
Some larger companies have programs for hiring people with disabilities. It is a good idea to get into
touch with them, as they are much more enthusiastic to hiring people with disabilities due to their positive
past experiences. Some disability-support groups may have lists of companies that have been helpful in the past, have a history of hiring disabled people or know of some working positions that are open to disabled people.
When talking with an employer about the job, one must be very honest. He should tell the employer
about his disability. It is also important to know whether there are any sorts of" tools or new technology
that could help a person with a disability do a job. For instance, when working with computers, there is
special software that allows one to tell it what to write instead of having to type it. Or a new type of
wheelchair that allows one to do his job easier would also be a very good investment as it may be the key
to getting a job. It is very important for a disabled person to realize that he should not suffer mistreatment
of any kind from the employer. Although his abilities are slightly different from the majority of other
working people, there is no reason for one to he treated badly. He should ask for a fair salary and fair
treatment.

chose universities in Hong Kong; when the very best student of Beijing picked up HK
University while giving up the nearby Pe king or Tsinghua University; when the highest enroll
ment(录取) rate of Hong Kong Science and Industry University reached 48: 1 ,it"s the high
time to ask where the real education heaven for students in China is.
Years ago,the answer certainly would be"Peking or Tsinghua University". But now no one
could give the exact reaction without hesitation. The only sure thing is that HK universities have
gradually showed an unusual attraction to a great many mainland students.
It"s no doubt to call this HK craze(狂热) ,which is even out of the expectation of those
HK universities themselves.
How can HK universities shake the steady founda tions of Peking and Tsinghua and attract
so many mainland students?
First, Hong Kong universities offer large amount scholarship, especially for the top students
who can receive the sum scholarship as much as 400 000 HK dollars. Since higher education
has become a kind of heavy burden of many families,it"s easy to understand why the reaction to
the generous offering of HK universities is great.
Second, most HK universities receive professors and students from all over the world and
carry out bilingual(双语的) education. This kind of excellent language atmosphere is an other
attraction for mainland students.
Further more, university students in Hong Kong have a better chance to study abroad as
exchange students.
Can mainland top universities like Peking or Tsinghua University be calm as before when
facing the unexpected competition from HK? Will they take relevant measures to win back the
top students who once help them set the worldwide reputation? Time will explain it.
The fierce competition brought by HK universities can be a good thing for an entire improvement
of education in Cluna. After the awakerung and action taking of main-
land universities, they can perform better together with HK universities.
At least,it reminded the mainland universities the tuition fees (学费) are among students" top
concem when they are choosing universities. It"s time to move.
B. Higher education in Hong Kong.
C.The competition between HK University and Peking University.
D. The fatal of mainland universities.
B. they concern only about the tuition fees when choosing universities
C. HK universities offer higher scholarship, better environment and more opportunities for their further
study
D. Peking university has lost its worldwide reputation.
B. Mainland universities had better tower their tuition fees and win back the top students.
C. Universities both in mainland and in HK would get an entire improvement during the competition.
D.lt may probably cause a complete loss to both sides in the end.
B. didn"t expect their enrollment of mainland students would be so popular
C. have strict enrollment rules and only l out of 48 students can get the chance to study there
D. are proud of their teaching staff and facilities
B. The opportunities come for top students to study abroad.
C. Mainland universities should make full preparations to challenge HK universities.
D. Top students should be offered further education free of charge.
long way from their grandchildren. The loneliness of these older people has become an issue that schools
are trying to teach children about .
On a popular teacher"s website, there is a classroom activity to help make children aware of the
implications of the different generations of the same family living far from each other. It"s a story about Mrs. Eiderdown, an elderly lady whose grandchildren have moved to Australia with their parents. She lives
alone and rarely sees her family .
First of all, the children speculate about Mrs. Eiderdown"s life. What does she have for breakfast ?
what does she do all day ?how does she feel about her life ?
One day, Mrs. Eiderdown decides that she wants a pet to keep her company and puts an
advertisement in a local shop window. Then she waits at home to see if anyone will answer her
advertisement .
A tall thin man rings her doorbell. he is holding a cardboard box. Mrs. Eiderdown chats with the man
for ten minutes before she realizes that she hasn"t looked in-side the box to see what the pet is. She can hear a his-sing sound. The children guess what is in the box(a snake). Mrs. Eiderdown thanks the man but
says she doesn"t think the snake is a good idea .
The next time the doorbell rings, there"s a lady on the doorstep, also carrying a cardboard box.In the
bottom of the box, Mrs. Eiderdown sees something black and hairy with eight legs. Again ,the children say what they think it is (a spider). Mrs. Eiderdown thanks the lady for her kindness but says that a spider is
not the sort of pet she has in mind.
At last, the little girl next door brings her a dog .Mrs. Eiderdown"s life improves a lot because of the dog.
more importantly, of course, the little girl, whose own granny lives a long way away, starts to visit
Mrs.Eiderdown more often. This interactive classroom idea has led to a greater awareness among children about the possible loneliness of older people who live quite near them .
B. neighbors help select pets for Mrs. Eiderdown
C. society helps the lonely people in the UK
D. school send pets to the lonely elderly
B. they try to experience her loneliness
C. they try to imagine how she lives
D. they write about her life story
B. the people who offer pets are lady"s neighbors
C. the farther the elderly live ,the lonelier they feel
D. the little girl begins to care more about Mrs. Eiderdown
