from an empty oil tin. Their headmistress, Emile Jean-Noel, is one of the few women school headteachers in
the country.
Today, over 70% of Haitian population live without proper food, water, schools, or housing. To reduce the
hunger that prevents learning and to encourage parents to send their children to school, meals are provided by
the World Food Programme.
"We are so cut off that we have many difficulties," comments Emile, adding that finding chalk, school books
and other materials is practically impossible. Entile tries to encourage people around her to make use of available
resources. Her efforts are bearing fruit. One of her successes was convincing local women to contribute to
their children"s schooling and increase their income by selling embroidery (刺绣) and other handicrafts.
Recent political instability has meant that the country has not invested (投资) in education for ten years.
Only 44% of children go to school and less than half of them finish primary school. Less than a third of these
children go on to secondary school. In rural areas it is not rare to find 17 and 18 year olds in primary school-
Beau-Roc has only 4 teachers for 260 pupils. Emile works constantly to improve her pupils" environment.
Under her direction, a local worker is now constructing a store house for the food delivered regularly by the
WFP.
Not only is Emile"s salary small, but she receives it irregularly. For her, transport is a real headache. She
lives five kilometers away and has to take the tap, a privately-owned bus, costing more than she can afford.
"The decision to be a rural teacher in Haiti should not be taken lightly", Emile comments. "With all the
sacrifices and risks it requires, only those who are really cut out for teaching should do it." However, Emile
loves her job. "I always feel at home with the children and, because the parents understand what I"m doing,
I try to give my best."
B. Persuading local women to care about their children" s education.
C. Encouraging people around to use those available resources.
D. Finding chalk, school books and other materials.
B. political instability in Haiti
C. challenges in Emile"s life
D. Emile"s constant efforts
B. unfamiliar with teaching
C. qualified for teaching
D. cautious about teaching

rapid decline when they reach middle age could be the cause.
The research of ageing on the heart has shown that women"s longevity may be linked to the fact that their
hearts do not lose much pumping power with age.
"We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 20 and 70 years of age,"
said the head of the study, Samantha of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.
"Within the heart there are millions of cells which make it beat. Between the ages of 20 and 70, one-third
of those cells die and are not replaced in men," said Samantha. "This is part of the ageing process."
What amazes scientists is that the female heart suffers very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old
woman"s heart could work almost as perfectly as a 20-year-old one"s.
"This gender (性别) difference might give the reason why men live shorter than women," said Samantha.
They studied over 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 17 and 80, who are mainly healthy persons
so as to reduce the influence of disease. "The team has yet to think about why ageing suffers a greater loss on
the male heart," said Samantha.
But there is also good news-men can enjoy the health of their hearts with regular exercise. Samantha
stressed that women should also take regular exercise to stop their leg muscles getting weaker as they age.
B. long life
C. aging
D. effect
B. women"s ageing process
C. the gender difference
D. hearts and long life
B. women can produce the cells that make the heart beat C. the female heart suffers less loss of the cells

traditional educational institution. Let"s look at some of the benefits of homeschooling.
1. Flexible Schedule
Homeschooling enables a flexible schedule. 1_____ With homeschooling, your child can start homeschooling at 9 am or later depending on your preferred schedule. You can schedule your child"s homeschooling education
as you see fit with materials or subjects that may be not available in a traditional school.
2. Individual attention
With homeschooling, your child gets all the individual attention. For example, if your child is weak in maths,
you could devote more time and energy to teaching maths.
Your child"s homeschooling schedule can be adjusted for that. For example, if your child is better at science
than at maths, simply devote more homeschooling hours to maths and cut back on science. With
homeschooling, the choice is yours. 2_____
3. Family Activity
The schooling of the child can become an extended family activity. Examples are field trips and experiments.
Plus, the child also receives more quality time with his/her parents. 3_____ The child is also free of any negative
peer pressure or influences.
4. 4_____
With homeschooling, the child does not need to prove his/her abilities to other children. Parents are able to
plan the learning program according to his strengths and weakness.
Parents can also change the curriculum to suit the learning style of the child. 5_____ Some children even
learn better from experiencing or seeing things in action.
B. Religion Learning
C. Traditional schools can"t do that.
D. There is more time for family bonding.
E. For example, the child needn"t wake up at 7 every morning.
F. Plus, it is quite impossible to provide individual attention to all students.
G. For example, some children learn better from reading while others need to write.
confident that their degree would help them to find a good job.
However, in the past four years the job market has changed greatly. This year"s college graduates are
facing one of the worst job markets. For example, Ryan Stewart, a graduate of San Jose State University,
got a degree in religious studies, but he has not gotten any job offers. He points out that many people already
working are getting laid off and don"t have jobs, so it"s even harder for new college graduates to find jobs.
Four years ago, the future looked bright for his class of 2006. There were many high-tech ("dot com")
job opportunities, graduates received many job offers, and they were able to get jobs with high salaries and
benefits such as health insurance and paid vacations. However,"Times have changed. It"s a new market,"
according to an officer of the university.
The officer says students who do find jobs started preparing two years ago. They worked during summer
vacations, they have had several short-time jobs, and they majored in fields that are still paying well, such as
accounting or nursing.
Even teaching is not a secure profession now. Ryan Stewart wanted to be a teacher. But instead he will
probably go back to school in order to become a college teacher. He thinks college teaching could be a good
career even in a bad economy.
In conclusion, these days a college degree does not automatically lead to a good job with a high salary.
Some students can only hope that the value of their degree will increase in the future.
B. It would guarantee their quick promotion (升职).
C. It built up their confidence in the job market.
D. It would help them to start an academic career.
B. He majored in teaching in the university.
C. College teaching is less challenging than high-tech jobs.
D. College teaching career won"t be influenced by economy.
B. new college graduates today can"t find any job
C. a college degree can still lead to a good job
D. graduates must prepare early to find jobs
B. resistance
C. speed
D. acceleration (加速度)
B. To slow down the falling speed.
C. To push against the air in the sky.
D. To accelerate the falling movement.
B. A light ball falls faster than a heavy ball.
C. A light ball and a heavy ball fall at the same speed.
D. A light ball and a heavy ball fall at different speed.
B. When air resistance equals gravity, objects fall at terminal speed.
C. Without air; all falling objects get faster and faster at the same rate.
D. Slippers (拖鞋) and boots (靴子) fall at the same speed because they have the same shape
greenhouse gases they send out, which is thought to be responsible for global warming.
Thanks to special bacteria in their stomachs, kangaroo flatulence (肠胃气胀) contains no methane (甲烷)
and scientists want to transfer that bacteria to cattle and sheep who produce large quantities of the harmful
gas.
While the usual image of greenhouse gas pollution is a billowing smokestack (烟囱) pushing out carbon
dioxide, farm animals" passing wind contribute a surprisingly high percentage of total emissions (排放物) in
some countries. "Fourteen percent of emissions from all sources in Australia is from enteric methane from
cattle and sheep," said Athol Klieve, a senior research scientist with the Queensland state government.
"And if you look at another country such as New Zealand, which has got a much higher agricultural base,
they"re actually up around 50 percent," he said.
Researchers say the bacteria also makes the digestive process much more efficient and could potentially
save millions of dollars in feed costs for farmers.
But it will take researchers at least three years to isolate (分离) the bacteria, before they can even start to
develop a way of transferring it to cattle and sheep.
Another group of scientists, meanwhile, has suggested Australians should farm fewer cattle and sheep and
just eat more kangaroos. And about 20 percent of health-conscious Australians are believed to eat the national
symbol already.
"It"s low in fat, it"s got high protein levels and it"s very clean in the sense that basically it"s the free-range
(放养的) animal," said Peter Ampt of the University of New South Wales"s institute of environmental studies.
B. to help Australian farmers to earn more money
C. so that they can protect Australian ecosystem
D. so that they can make full use of special bacteria
B. less cattle and sheep are raised in New Zealand
C. farm animals are to blame for greenhouse gases
D. New Zealand has the most animals in the world
B. warn farmers of the danger of animal waste
C. illustrate the possible solutions to pollution
D. present a recent study on global warming
B. is low in fat
