Wrong! Learning should last a lifetime. You exercise your body to stay strong, and you should exercise
your mind to stay sharp.
An English idiom says, "You can"t teach an old dog new tricks." But scientists have discovered that
isn"t true. Older people can learn, and they should, in order to keep their brain active. Now a new trend
has begun in several states in the US that encourages learning. Adults can attend One Day University.
They can spend a Saturday or Sunday hearing four 70-minute lectures. Each one is given by a top
university professor. One of the original participants said, "It"s like a health club for the brain." Also,
universities like MIT have made all of their courses and lectures available online for free! Libraries offer
learning programs too. With so much available, there is no excuse not to learn!
Learning is a habit.Don"t leave it behind after you leave school. On the website lifehack.org, author
Scott Young mentions several things to help you.
Always have a book. It doesn"t matter if you read fast or slow. Just read.If you read just one book a
week, you"ll read 52 over the course of a year. Think of the knowledge you"ll gain!
Practice it. As you read, do something with what you"ve learned. Don"t just enjoy the mental exercise.
Use the knowledge. If you read about painting, try it!
Make a "to learn" list. Compose a "to learn" list for yourself. Maybe you want to speak better English, play the piano, or cook French food. Whatever interests you, put it on your list and then make the time to do it. Teach others. Whatever you learn, teach someone else. You"ll not only help others but also
understand what you"ve learned.

help the child to do the right thing. When this does not work, the parent usually punishes the child.
There are many things that a parent can do. One thing that people have done is to spank (打屁股) the child. When a parent spanks a child, they will use their hand or a hard object to strike them on their
bottom. This is meant to show the child that they have done something wrong.
One parent remembers being spanked when he was a child. His parents used a wooden spoon. When he spanked his own children with his hand, he saw that he put a red mark on his child"s leg. He never did
that again.
One problem with spanking is that it teaches the child to hit someone when they do not like what the
other person is doing. Another problem with spanking is that the parent is usually angry and can hit the
child too hard. Sometimes parents will use spanking for everything and not try other ways to get the child
to do the right thing.
Many parents are not sure of what to do instead of spanking. Some people think that their religion(宗教)tells them that spanking is okay. Some think that the law lets them do it. The courts (法院) say that
parents have the right to teach their children how to behave.
Other things should be tried before a parent decides to spank a child. Telling the child exactly what is
wanted from them can be one thing. Giving a child more than one choice is another thing that can be tried. Getting down to the child"s level and taking a more child-friendly approach (方法) can help as well.

can do your homework more quickly. Learning to study is not difficult.
The first thing to remember is that you must be willing to learn. It doesn"t mean that you must always
like the subject. It does mean, however, that you must be willing to do whatever is necessary to learn. Try
to understand why it is important and how it will help you now and later to do and learn other things.
Knowing mathematics facts will be useful in your whole life. Knowing how to spell makes any kind of
writing easier. Sometimes subject that you think is going to be uninteresting will be exciting when you begin to work at it and understand it more clearly. Learning things can be fun if you are willing to work with
them.
Here"s some advice for you: have a certain time each day and a quiet place with good lighting for study, so that you can concentrate on your study without interruptions(中断); have everything ready before you
sit down to study, a dictionary, paper, a pen and books; be sure you understand what you should learn
before you start; read carefully and pay special attention to the most important things; when memorizing,
first find out the main parts and then recite the whole thing; check your homework after you finish it; never
forget the importance of review and preview.

Kathy Mellor of Rhode Island will spend the next year as an international spokeswoman for education.
President Bush and his wife, Laura ,honored her during a ceremony(仪式)at the White House last
week.
For the past nineteen years ,Kathy Mellor has taught English as a second language at Davisville
Middle School in North Kingstown, Rhode Island ,in the northeastern United States .She redesigned
the program for E.S.L students at her school to provide each student with one to three periods per day
in classes for English learners .How much instruction the students get depends on their level of skill in
listening ,speaking ,reading and writing. The amount of time they spend in these classes in reduced as
their level of English increases.
A teacher describes this as the most successful E.S.L. program in North Kingstown. She also praises
Kathy Mellor for providing help to students and their families by forming a local parents group for
speakers of other languages .This improved their ability to help their children.
Kathy Mellor earned a master"s degree in education from Rhode Island College. She studied teaching
English as a second language.

fifty states .As Teacher of the Year ,Kathy Mellor will travel around the United States and to other
countries .She will talk about the importance of education and the work of teachers.

the DailyStep audio email lesson service because I noticed that when I started their English
course, my students" speaking and listening skills were much weaker than their reading and
writing skills. In my view, this is because education in school does not focus enough on
communication skills. DailyStep is designed to remedy this situation by offering more practice
in speaking, listening and vocabulary.
I am crazy about the English language and it is a real pleasure for me to see the
development of my students" language skills.
I majored in (以….为专业)law at university and then worked for three years as a
researcher and journalist for Sky television and BBC magazines. I decided to change to
English teaching because of my love of the English language and my wish to move into more
satisfying work.
Then I qualified (取得资格)as an English teacher in 1992. My first teaching job was at
a language school in Covent Garden, London, where I taught examination classes and
Business English . After two years, I moved to the Nippon Club where I taught General
English and Business English courses for 9 years. I also developed a unique course called
British Society & Culture, covering all areas of British life, such as politics, law, e
ducation & music. At the same time, taught Business, Financial& Law English in the financial
centre of London. My students included staff (工作人员)from banks and law firms.
As well as running the DailyStep website, I also provide in-company English speech
training for companies in London. If you have an important speech coming up and would like
some information about how I can help you, please email me at jane@dailystep.com.

How to Become a Better Student
Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student.
This is not necessarily so,however.Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants
to.Here is how.
Plan your time carefully.
When planning your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do.After
making the list, you should make a schedule of your time.First arrange your time for eating,
sleeping,dressing,etc..Then decide a good,regular time for studying.Don’t forget to
set aside enough time for entertainment.A weekly schedule may not solve all the problems,
but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study.
Look around the house for a good study area.Keep this place, which may be a desk
or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games,
radios or TV!When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class.
Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.Really listening in
class means less work later.Taking class notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly. When you get home from schools,go over your notes.Review the
important points that your teacher has mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is
going to discuss the next day, read the material. This will help you understand the next
class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you
will remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude about the tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you
have learned about a subject. They help you to remember your new knowledge. The world
won’t end if you don’t pass a test,so don’t be overly worried. There are other methods that
might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have
tried these.
