阅读理解     A new research has uncovered that culture is a determining factor when interpreting facial emotions
(情感). The study reveals that in cultures where emotional control is the standard, such as Japan, focus
is placed on the eyes to interpret emotions. Whereas in cultures where emotion is openly expressed,
such as the United States, the focus is on the mouth to interpret emotion.
"These findings go against the popular theory that the facial expressions of basic emotions can be
universally recognized," said University of Alberta researcher Dr Takahiko Masuda. "A person"s culture
plays a very strong role in determining how they will read emotions and needs to be considered when
interpreting facial expressions."
These cultural differences are even noticeable in computer emotions(情感符号), which are used to
convey a writer"s emotions over email and text message. The Japanese emotions for happiness and
sadness vary in terms of how the eyes are drawn, while American emotions vary with the direction of the
mouth. In the United States the emotions: ) and: -)show a happy face, whereas the emotions: (or: -(
show a sad face. However, Japanese tend to use the symbol (??) to indicate a happy face, and (; _;) to
indicate a sad face.
"We think it is quite interesting and appropriate that a culture tends to mask its emotions. The
Japanese would focus on a person"s eyes when determining emotions, as eyes tend to be quite subtle
(微妙的)," said Masuda. "In the United States, where open emotion is quite common, it makes sense to
focus on the mouth, which is the most expressive feature on a person"s face."1. The text mainly tells us that ________.A. cultural differences are expressed in emotions
B. culture is the key to interpreting facial emotions
C. different emotions are preferred in different cultures
D. people from different cultures express emotions differently2. Which emotion is used by Americans to show a happy face?A. (; _; )
B. : -)
C. : -(
D. : (3. If a Japanese wants to detect whether a smile is true or false, he will probably ________.A. read the whole face
B. focus on the mouth
C. look into the eyes
D. judge by the voice4. People used to believe that ________.A. some facial expressions of emotions were too complex to be recognized
B. people in the world interpreted basic emotions in different ways
C. people could only recognize the facial expressions of basic emotions
D. people all over the world understood basic emotions in the same way

Aside from Earth, just about every surface in the solar system is unsafe for humans to explore. The
air on most other planets is insufficient for humans to breathe, making it necessary to wear a space
suit and oxygen equipment. The temperatures on these surfaces are much too hot or much too cold
for any humans to withstand.Plus there would be complications with radiation, weather, and a lack
of gravity.Robots have much less limitation in these areas and can survive much longer under these
conditions.
Data Collection. Robots are designed for collecting scientific data.Robots are also able to
perform many tasks at one time and can process information much quicker and more efficiently.
Important scientific projects from detecting minerals, analyzing ground samples, and finding water
are all performed much quicker and more accurately(精确地)by robots.
Cost Effective. The use of robots has made the cost of space exploration much less expensive
than it would cost for humans to do the work.In order to successfully send humans into space we
would need to build a vehicle that can not only carry humans, but also have enough food and water to
keep them alive for the duration of the trip. Moreover, robots have no problems working for hours on
end.Robots never complain, they don"t require food or water, and they never need a bathroom break.
Space Travel. Over the past 30 years or so there have been many different types of robots used
successfully in the exploration of space.Perhaps the most famous and successful robots are the Spirit
and Opportunity who have both been exploring the surface of Mars. They have both been very
successful with experiments on soil and rocks and have even found evidence of water in Mars" history.1.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?A.The use of robots in space exploration costs more than the use of humans.
B.It may be dangerous for human to explore the solar system except the earth.
C.Both the Spirit and Opportunity have found the evidence of water in the Mars.
D.Many different types of robots have explored the space successfully.2.Which column of the passage could come from?A.Education.
B.Finance.
C.Travel.
D.Science.3.The underlined phrase "withstand" most probably means "________".A.arise
B.bear
C.defeat
D.diverse4.What is the writer"s attitude in writing this passage?A.Negative.
B.Persuasive.
C.Subjective.
D.Objective.

阅读理解     People who have lost the ability to understand or use words due to brain damage are called aphasics(失语症患者). Such patients can be extremely good at something else. From the changing expressions on speakers" faces and the tones of their voices, they can tell lies from truths.
Doctors studying the human brain have given a number of examples of this amazing power of aphasics. Some have even compared this power to that of a dog with an ability to find out the drugs hidden in the
baggage.
Recently, scientists carried out tests to see if all that was said about aphasics was true. They studied a mixed group of people. Some were normal, others were aphasic. It was proved that the aphasics were far ahead of the normal people in recognizing false speeches-in most cases, the normal people were fooled by words, but the aphasics were not.
Some years ago, Dr. Oliver Sacks wrote in his book about his experiences with aphasics. He
mentioned a particular case in a hospital. Some aphasics were watching the president giving a speech on
TV. Since the president had been an actor earlier, making a good speech was no problem for him. He was trying to put his feelings into every word of his speech.
But his way of speaking had the opposite effect on the patients. They didn"t seem to believe him.
Instead, they burst into laughter. The aphasics knew that the president did not mean a word of what he
was saying. He was lying!
Many doctors see aphasics as people who are not completely normal because they lack the ability to
understand words. However, according to Dr. Sacks, they are more gifted than normal people. Normal
people may get carried away by words. Aphasics seem to understand human expressions better, though
they cannot understand words.1. What is so surprising about aphasics?      A. They can fool other people.
B. They can find out the hidden drugs.
C. They can understand language better.
D. They can tell whether people are lying.2. How did the scientists study aphasics?    A. By asking them to watch TV together.
B. By organizing them into acting groups.
C. By comparing them with normal people.
D. By giving them chances to speak on TV.3. What do we learn from this text?      A. What one says reflects how one feels.
B. Aphasics have richer feelings than others.
C. Normal people often tell lies in their speeches.
D. People poor at one thing can be good at another

阅读理解。     In 1947 a pilot of a small aeroplane saw rune strange objects in the sky over
Washington, the USA. He said that they looked like saucers. Newspapers printed
his story under the headline" Flying Saucers".
Since then, all over the world, people have reported similar strange flying objects.
No one knows what they are or where they come from. Some people say that they
do not exist, but many others say that they have seen them. Usually people on the
ground have seen them but not always. Airline pilots also have reported seeing them
and so have astronauts-the men who fly in spaceships.
Perhaps some people saw them only in their imagination or illusion(幻觉). Perhaps
some people made a mistake. But airline pilots and astronauts do not usually make
mistakes of this kind. Captain Ed Mitchell, the sixth man to walk on the moon, said in
1974 that he believed that some" flying sancers (飞碟) " were real. Many other people
now believe that these strange flying objects are visiting the earth from other worlds in
space. "They have come to greet us," they say.
The American government tried to find out more about these objects. It listened to
a great many people who said they had seen them. But the Govemment Committee
could not decide on what the objects were.It called them UFO, which is short for
"unidentified flying object".
Some even say they have seen people in the flying Saucers! In 1964,a driver of a
police car in new Mexico saw a UFO landing a mile away. When he reached it, there
were two small figures standing near it. They looked like little men. When he reported
on his radio, they got inside the object and flew away.
In 1973 two men were out fishing in Mississippi River. They say they saw a UFO
shaped like an egg. There were three creatures like men but their skins were silver in
colour. They had no eyes, and their mouths were just slits(裂缝) . Their noses and ears
were pointed(尖的).They made the fishermen get inside the UFO for a while. Then the
creatures photographed them and took them to the place where they had been fishing.
There are many other similar stories. Some are probably untrue but some may be
true. No one knows.1. According to the passage, the name " Flying Saucers" was first used by.______A. a pilot of a small plane
B. all officials in Washington
C. an editor of a newspaper
D. the man who flies in saucers2. The American govemment tried to._____A.look for the flying objects.
B. know where the objects come from
C.learn more about UFOs
D. report more about UFOs3. The purpose of this passage is to tell us .______A. the shape of UFOs
B. how to observe UFOs
C. the danger of UFOs
D. what we know about UFOs4. It is implied in the passage that the author._______A. does not believe at all about the existence of UFOs
B. believes that UFOs are real objects flying in the sky
C.is not sure whether there are UFOs or not
D.thinks that these UFOs come from other planets

earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half
of the earth.
On 17 July, a piece four kilometers wide enters the earth"s atmosphere(大气层) with a
massive explosion. About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the
South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in
the sea bed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water,
a kilometer high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour. Cities on the
African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned.
Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in
Argentina. Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains. The shock
waves move north into Califomia and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los
Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes. Millions
of people in the southern half of the earth are already dead, but the north won"t escape
for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, temperatures
around the world fall to almost zero.Crops are ruined. The sun won"t be seen again for
many years. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later, no more than 10
million people remain alive.
Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history
of the Earth. The dinosaurs were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million
years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by
a piece of object in space. The dinosaurs couldn"t live through the cold climate that
followed and died out. Will we meet the same end?1. What is mainly described in the passage?______A. A historic discovery.
B. An event of imagination.
C. A research on space.
D. A scientific adventure.2. When the first piece hits the South Atlantic, it causes.______A. an earthquake
B. damages to cities
C. an Earth explosion
D. huge waves3. Why can"t the northern half of the Earth escape for long?______A. Because the land is covered with water.
B. Because the light and heat from the sun can not reach the earth.
C. Because people there can not live at the temperature of zero.
D. Because wars break out among countries.4. By giving the example of dinosaurs, the author tries to prove .______A. animals could not live in the cold climate
B.what happened 65 million years ago was an invented story
C. the human beings will die out in 2094
D. the Earth could be hit by other objects in space
