Every heard the old saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”? It is true! Apples have a lot of nutritional value!
A medium sized apple has only 80 calories (卡). What a great snack choice! Not only is an apple low in calories, they contain absolutely no fat. Thus, eating apples as snacks, as opposed to chips or cakes, will help reduce the risk of cancer.
On top of reducing the risk of cancer, the low sodium (钠) amounts in apples also help reduce high blood pressure and heart disease. They are cholesterol (胆固醇) free. They are also rich in vitamin A, which helps strengthen vision (视力) along with bone and tooth development.
Now that we know the nutritional facts, let’s take a look at some of the fun facts—That’s right! Apples can be fun, as well as healthy!
If an apple is fresh, it will float on water. Twenty-five percent of an apple is air, thus allowing it to float. Can you imagine bobbing (上下浮动) for apples that sink?
And, did you know that an apple is covered with a natural layer of wax (蜡)? That’s what the peeling (剥下的皮) is. It protects the apple’s high water content, keeping the apple fresh.
Apples are a very important part of a healthy diet, but keep in mind they can be fun. And always remember, if an apple sinks in water, pick another one to bob for!

Three more cattle farms in Andong,North Gyeongsang Province, were found to have been infected with the deadly foot-and-mouth disease,Nov.2 2010,Thursday.People fear that livestock farms in other parts of the country could be hit by the virus soon.
On Monday, the disease was first detected on two pig farms in Andong, about half a year after the last disease broke out in Korea.A cattle farm in the area also fell victim to the animal disease the following day.
The Ministry for Food,Agriculture,Forestry and Fisheries made sure that three more cases of foot-and-mouth disease appeared on Thursday and decided to kill all the animals at the farms and others at nearby places to stop the spread of the virus to other regions.Over 800 cows and pigs within a 500 meter range of the infected farms were killed and buried underground.
“Three suspected cases were reported Wednesday, near the pig farms where the first outbreak was reported. The laboratory tests today showed that all three cattle farms were infected with the disease,” a ministry official said. Two newly infected cattle farms were less than 4 kilometers away from the two pig farms, while the third one was only 2.5 kilometers away.
The ministry also said another cattle farm in Andong reported suspected cases of foot-and-mouth disease on its livestock Thursday, indicating the disease will likely continue to spread across the city and possibly beyond.
The government has culled more than 33,000 animals near the affected farms Monday alone under its disease prevention program.Additionally, all 84 livestock markets across the nation were closed Wednesday for a period to prevent spread of the disease.
No suspected cases have been reported outside of Andong, but the government Thursday decided to destroy an additional 22,000 pigs at two farms in Boryeong,South Chungcheong Province.

Secondhand smoke isn’t just a health threat to people. It can also hurt dogs and cats, veterinarians say.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 126 million Americans who don"t smoke are exposed to secondhand smoke in their homes, vehicles, workplaces, and public places. This exposure causes thousands of lung cancer and heart disease deaths among nonsmokers every year, according to the California Environmental Protection Agency.
“Making the leap from the effects of secondhand smoke on humans to their effects on pets isn"t a big one,” says veterinarian (兽医专家) Carolynn MacAllister of Oklahoma State University.
“There have been a number of scientific papers recently that have reported the significant health threat secondhand smoke poses to pets,” MacAllister said.“Secondhand smoke has been associated with oral cancer and lymphoma in cats, lung and nasal cancer in dogs,as well as lung cancer in birds.”
Studies have also shown that dogs living in a smoking household are susceptible to cancers of the nose and sinus area, particularly if they are a long-nosed breed, because their noses have a greater surface area that is exposed to carcinogens and a greater area for them to accumulate.Dogs affected with nasal cancer normally don"t survive for more than one year.
“Short and medium-nosed dogs are more susceptible to lung cancer, because their shorter nasal passage aren"t as effective at accumulating the inhaled secondhand smoke carcinogens,” MacAllister said.“This results in more carcinogens (致癌物质) reaching the lungs.”
Birds are also at risk for lung cancer,as well as pneumonia, because their respiratory systems are hypersensitive to any type of air pollutant.
To help prevent animals from being adversely affected by smoking, pet owners who smoke should have a designated smoking area that is separated from the home or stop smoking altogether,MacAllister said.

Howling(吼叫) is a behavior commonly observed among a wolf pack(狼群). As pack animals, wolves work together to hunt and rely on howling as an important means of communication among each other. There’re different explanations of a wolf’s howl and it appears that there may be more to discover.
One theory is that wolves howl to bond better together. It’s almost as if howling together helps the pack stay together. Perhaps something similar to people feeling a sense of involvement with each other when singing a song together. But this theory may be wrong, explains Fred H. Harrington, a professor who studies wolf behavior.
Indeed, there have been times when wolves have been seen one moment howling in a chorus(合唱), and the next, quarreling among each other. It appears that usually the lowest-ranking members of the pack may actually be “punished” for joining in the chorus at times. So is howling a way to strengthen a social bond or just a way to reconfirm status (地位) among its members? Why do wolves howl for sure?
What is clear, however, is that howling is often used among pack mates to locate each other. Hunting grounds are distant and it happens that wolves may separate from one another at times. When this happens, howling appears to be an excellent means of gathering.
Howling, interestingly, is a contagious behavior. When one wolf starts to howl, very likely others will follow. This is often seen to occur in the morning, as if wolves were doing some sort of “roll call” where wolves all howl together to report their

Are you a compulsive spender,or do you hold on to your money as long as possible? Are you a bargain hunter? Would you rather use charge accounts than pay in cash? Your answers to these questions will reflect your personality.According to psychologists, our individual money habits not only show our beliefs and values, but can also stem from past problems.
Experts in psychology believe that for many people, money is an important symbol of strength and influence.Husbands who complain about their wives’ spending habits may be afraid that they are losing power in their marriage.Wives,on the other hand, may waste huge amounts of money because they are angry at their husbands. In addition, many people consider money a symbol of love. They spend it on their family and friends to express love,or they buy themselves expensive presents because they need love.
People can be addicted to different things —for example, alcohol, drugs, certain foods,or even television. They are compulsive in their addictions,i.e.they must satisfy these needs to feel comfortable. In the same way, according to psychologists, compulsive spenders must spend money.
For people who buy on credit, furthermore, charge accounts are even more exciting than money:in other words, they feel that with credit, they can do anything.Their pleasures in spending enormous amounts are actually greater than those they get from the things they buy.
There is even a special psychology of bargain hunting. To save money,of course, most people look for sales, low prices, and discounts.Compulsive bargain hunters, however, often buy things that they don’t need just because they are cheap. They want to believe that they are helping their budgets, but they are really playing an exciting game:when they can buy something for less than other people, they feel that they are winning. Most people, experts claim, have two reasons for their behavior:a good reason for the things that they do and the real reason.
It is not only scientists,of course, who understand the psychology of spending habits, but also business people.Stores, companies, and advertisers use psychology to increase business:they consider people’s needs for love, power,or influence, their basic values, their beliefs and opinions, etc.in their advertising and sales methods.
Psychologists often use a method called “behavior therapy(疗法)”to help individuals solve their personality problems. In the same way, they can help people who feel that they have problems with money:they give them “assignments” If a person buys something in every store that he enters, for instance,a therapist might teach him self discipline in this way:on the first day of his therapy, he must go into a store, stay five minutes, and then leave. On the second day,he should stay for ten minutes and try something on.On the third day,he stays for fifteen minutes, asks the salesclerk a question, but does not buy anything.Soon he will learn that nothing bad will happen to him if he doesn’t buy anything, and he can solve the problem of his compulsive buying.

PALO ALTO, California----"Switching off the television may help prevent children from getting fatter---- even if they do not change their diet or increase the amount they exercise," US researchers said last week.
A study of 192 third and fourth graders, generally aged eight and nine, found that children who cut the number of hours spent watching television gained nearly two pounds(0.9kg) less over a one-year period than those who did not change their television diet.
"The findings are important because they show that weight loss can only be the result of a reduction in television viewing and not any other activity," said Thomas Robinson, a pediatrician(儿科专家) at Stanford University.
"American children spend an average of more than four hours per day watching television and videos or playing video games, and rates of childhood being very fat have doubled over the past 20 years," Robinson said.
In the study, presented this week to the Pediatric Academic Societies‘ annual meeting in San Francisco, the researchers persuaded about 100 of the students to reduce their television viewing by one-quarter to one-third.
Children watching fewer hours of television showed a significantly smaller increase in waist size and had less body fat than other students who continued their normal television viewing, even though neither group ate a special diet or took part in any extra exercise.
"One explanation for the weight loss could be the children unstuck to the television may simply have been moving around more and burning off calories," Robinson said.
"Another reason might be due to eating fewer meals in front of the television. Some studies have suggested that eating in front of the TV encourages people to eat more," Robinson said.
