Imagine that you are sitting in a park and suddenly remember that you need to send an urgent email. You have your laptop computer with you and you connect it to a wireless access point and access the Internet. Then you send your email. This wouldn’t have been possible if there were no wireless Internet for laptops. Wireless Internet has come into our life in so many ways that we don’t even realize what a necessary part it has become of our day-to-day lives. How do we connect to a wireless Internet service for laptop computers? There are two ways to do this. They are Wi-Fi connection and Bluetooth connection. Wireless networking is very easy. You just switch on the Wi-Fi button that has been provided in the laptop for Wi-Fi scanning. Once that is done, the computer will connect to the Internet. An interesting fact about Wi-Fi networking is that you can create a network between similar wireless equipment. Consider a situation where you and your friend both have Wi-Fi laptops, and there is some data you want to exchange. Traditional networking architecture demands that you have a wireless router (路由器). But the beauty of Wi-Fi networking technology is that you can set up a network between you and your friend’s laptop, and share all the data you want. Broadband (宽带) Internet connection is typically preferred by any user as it provides better speed for Internet surfing. Up until the invention of 3G mobile phones, Internet speed on mobile phones was very slow. 3G has the promise of changing the entire face of broadband technology. Just imagine browsing at speeds of more that 2MB per second. To give you a measure of the speed, 3G enables you to watch high quality live videos on the Internet. It is amazing to see how technology changes and the rate at which it changes. There may come a time when you may be able to browse using mobile wireless Internet for laptops anywhere in the world. 小题1:What can we learn from Paragraph 1?A.Wireless Internet will become a reality soon. | B.We can send emails outdoors through wireless Internet. | C.Laptops enable us to do business everywhere. | D.People can easily find a laptop to surf the Internet. | 小题2:People can enjoy a wireless Internet service for laptop computers by .A.connecting to another computer | B.switching off the Wi-Fi button | C.using bluetooth connection | D.connecting bluetooth to Wi-Fi | 小题3:What should we do to share some data with a friend through Wi-Fi networking?A.Use the same computer. | B.Surf online. | C.Have a wireless router. | D.Set up a network. | 小题4:One main advantage of 3G mobile phones mentioned in the passage is .A.their low price | B.their different functions | C.their high Internet speed | D.their bright future |

What is a good education? The question is far from being answered. Once more, colleges and universities are changing their programs: they drop "fun courses" and restart some of the traditional subjects neglected (忽视) since the 1960s. Many great schools are again requiring the students to take a number of classes in English, history, literature, the social sciences, philosophy, the natural sciences, and art if they want to get a degree. Meanwhile, the experts are trying to describe the good education of our time. Obviously the purely vocational training once favored is not enough. But neither is the gentleman"s education of the nineteenth century. Educational programs must meet the demands of a modern world where men and women have to work and to deal with big problems. What, then, is a good education of this century? Some educators suggest that it should include foreign languages and the study of foreign cultures; a mastery of English, including the ability to write and speak well, because communications have become all-important in the modern world, and also because "a person who doesn"t speak and write clearly doesn"t reason clearly either"; some knowledge of the social sciences (sociology, psychology) that deal with human relations and human problems; some basic knowledge of modern science, which would enable future voters to be better informed about current problems like nuclear. Finally, many educators insist that all college graduates should be familiar with computers and modern information system since the educated professionals of tomorrow will have to understand their machines. Is that all? "No, of course not." answer the educators. "We have not mentioned the two great building blocks of education: history and literature!" 小题1:The best title for this passage might be _______.A.Education | B.A Mastery of English | C.A Good Education | D.Something About Study | 小题2:The underlined word "drop" in the first paragraph means _______.A.desert | B.dislike | C.decline | D.neglect | 小题3:The author thinks that the question about what a good education is _______.A.has been answered fairly well | B.hasn"t been put forward yet | C.has been dealt with successfully | D.has not been answered satisfactorily | 小题4:Some educational experts believe a mastery of English should include the ability _______.A.to read fast | B.to write and speak well | C.to write clearly and accurately | D.to listen and speak skillfully |

It was your birthday, and you just opened your biggest gift — a smooth silver laptop. You can’t wait to instant-message your friends with the news, but first you have to get rid of your old desktop computer. Do you just throw away the monitor and keyboard in the trash? Not anymore! Three states, that is, California, Maine, and Maryland, recently passed laws prohibiting people from throwing away electronic waste, or e-waste, includes televisions, computers, and cell phones. Although they don’t make you sick when you use them, they do when they are destroyed, for they contain heavy metals that can be harmful to human bodies. For example, cell phone batteries contain a kind of chemical causing damage to kidneys and deserted computer monitors can damage brains. And flat TV screens may cause injury to the nervous system. Those metals can leak into the ground or give off pollutants when burned. It is required that e-waste be placed at special sites rather than usual landfills. Several other states are considering similar laws and California is also pushing for a law banning the application of such dangerous substances. Government officials are not the only people taking aim at e-waste; environmentalists are also urging people to recycle their outdated equipment. “It is just a waste … to not recycle,” Patrick, an associate professor of occupational and environmental health at university of Iowa, told The Daily Iowan, “Allowing dangerous chemicals to leak into the environment for decades seems irresponsible.” What Can You Do? Reduce. Be a responsible shopper, and take care of your electronics so they will last longer. Re-use. Donate or sell your old high-tech equipment. Recycle. To find a responsible recycler, contact a local or state environmental group. 小题1:What’s the best title of this passage? A.E-waste is being made good use of. | B.E-waste, a big threat to us. | C.E-waste is dangerous to us all the while. | D.Goodbye, e-waste. | 小题2:Why is e-waste harmful and dangerous to human beings?A.Because they can go off at times and threaten us. | B.Because they can make people sick, as long as people use them. | C.Because they contain poisonous chemical substances. | D.Because they take too much space when placed in trashes. | 小题3:What can we know from Patrick’s words?A.Waste can’t be recycled. | B.Waste can be made use of by recycling | C.We have to recycle e-waste to protect the environment. | D.Protecting the environment is important. | 小题4:Which of the following is NOT given as a piece of advice to help with e-wastes?A.Taking care of your electronics so they will last longer. | B.Donating or selling your old high-tech equipment. | C.Contacting a local or state environmental group. | D.Asking fewer people to use electric products. |

Have you ever suddenly felt that someone you know was in trouble ― and he was? Have you ever dreamed something that came true later? Maybe you have ESP. ESP stands for Extra Sensory Perception. It may be called a sixth sense. It seems to let people know about events before they happen, or events that are happening some distance away. Here is an example: A woman was doing washing. Suddenly she shouted, “My father is dead! I saw him sitting in the chair!” Just then, a telephone came. The woman’s father had died of a heart illness. He died sitting in a chair. There are thousands of stories like this on record. Scientists are studying them to find out what is behind these strange mental messages. Here’s another example —— one of hundreds of dreams that have come true. A man dreamed he was walking along a road when a horse and carriage came by. The driver said, “There’s room for one more.” The man felt the driver was Death, so he ran away. The next day the man was getting on a crowded bus. The bus driver said, “There’s room for one more”. Then the man saw the driver’s face was the same face he had seen in the dream. He wouldn’t get on the bus. As the bus drove off, it crashed and burst into fires. Everyone was killed! Some people say stories like these are lies or coincidences. Others say that are ESP in true, from studies of ESP, we may some day learn more about the human mind. 小题1:ESP lets people know about _________.A.their dream | B.events after they happen | C.events before they happen | D.heart illness | 小题2:The example of the man shows the ability to _______.A.avoid traffic accidents | B.know the good and bad of a person | C.know about the events happening some distance away | D.sense a danger that will happen later on | 小题3:The best title of this passage is _________.A.Sixth Sense | B.The Human Mind | C.A Big Lie | D.A Terrible Dream |
