Leading investors have joined the growing chorus of concern about governments and companies
rushing into producing biofuels as a solution for global warming, saying that many involved in the sector
could be jeopardizing future profits if they do not consider the longterm impact of what they are doing
carefully.
It is essential to build sustainability criteria into the supply chain of any green fuel project in order to
ensure that there is no adverse effect on the surrounding environment and social structures. The report
produced by the investors expresses concern that many companies may not be fully aware of the potential pitfalls in the biofuel sector.
Production of corn and soya beans has increased dramatically in the last years as an ecofriendly
alternative to fossil fuels but environmental and human rights campaigners are worried that this will lead to
destruction of rain forests.Food prices could also go up as there is increased competition for crops as both foodstuffs and sources of fuel.Last week, the UN warned that biofuels could have dangerous side effects
and said that steps need to be taken to make sure that land converted to grow biofuels does not damage
the environment or cause civil unrest. There is already great concern about palm oil, which is used in many
foods in addition to being an important biofuel, as rain forests are being cleared in some countries and
people driven from their homes to create palm oil plantations.
An analyst and author of the investors"report says that biofuels are not a cure for climate change but
they can play their part as long as governments and companies manage the social and enviromental
impacts thoroughly. There should also be greater measures taken to increase efficiency and to reduce
demand.

how:
[2]Plan your time carefully.Make a list of your weekly tasks. Then make a schedule of your time.Be sure to set aside enough time to complete your normal reading and work assignments.Of course, studying

read that material, too. If you review your notes and textbook regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer.Regular review leads to improved performance on tests.
[6]Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. The word won’t end if you don’t pass a test,so don’t worry excessively about a single test.
[7]There are other techniques that might help you with your studying.Improving your studying habits will

The Scientific Method
Did you ever wonder why the water level in a glass doesn"t change when the ice in the glass melts
(融化)? To find out why, you can use the scientific method. Used by scientists in various situations, the
scientific method is also a clear and logical way to solve many real-world problems, as the procedure
below indicates.
Steps in the Scientific Method | Examples
State the problem or question. | "Why doesn"t the water level in a glass rise when ice melts?"
Collect information about the problem, using your own observations and research. | You already know that ice is frozen water. From your research, you learn that water and ice are made of water molecules (分子).
"Form a hypothesis, or a best guess based on the information." | The molecules in water appear to be closer together than they are in ice.
Test the hypothesis by doing an experiment. | Fill four glasses with ice. Then pour water over the ice and fill each glass to the rim. As the ice melts, you observe that the water does not spill over the top of the glasses. Each time you repeat the experiment, you get the same results.
Draw a conclusion based on your results. | Molecules are closer together in water than they are in ice.

A volcanic eruption(喷发) in Iceland has sent ash across northern Europe. Airlines have stopped or changed the flights across the Atlantic Ocean, leaving hundreds of passengers stuck in the airports. Grimsvotn is one of the largest and most active volcanoes in Europe. What makes Grimsvotn different is that it lies under a huge glacier(冰川) of ice up to 12 meters thick. The hot volcano heats up the ice above it, which then forms a layer(层) of water between the glacier and the volcano. This layer of water puts pressure on the volcano, keeping it stable(稳定). As the water flows out from under the glacier, the pressure lifts. The lava(岩浆) from the volcano then comes up to the surface. This is exactly what happened today. Now, airlines have to make changes to their flights so as not to fly through the clouds of volcanic ash. According to KLM one of Europe" s biggest airlines, airplanes cannot go under the cloud or over it. Going through the cloud can result in ash getting stuck in the airplane" s engines, causing damage to the plane. The eruption has also caused problems for animals in Iceland. The volcano left ash and sharp glass-like rocks all over the countryside. Farmers are keeping their animals inside to stop them from eating ash-covered glass or the sharp object. 1. What makes Grimsvotn different from other volcanoes? A. It is below ice. B. It lies under the sea. C. It is the largest volcano. D. Its lava affects the airlines. 2. What keeps Grimsvotn stable? A. The slow flow of water. B. The low water temperature. C. The thick glacier. D. The water pressure. 3. Which of the following is the result of the volcanic eruption? A. People stop traveling in Europe. B. Airlines suffer from the loss of planes. C. It becomes dangerous for animals to eat outside. D. Farmers have lost many of their animals. 4. This text is most probably taken from____ A. a research paper B. a newspaper report C. a class presentation D. a geography textbook
