Learners of English, especially self-taught learners may have trouble in understanding speeches by native speakers. The following ways might help improve their ability.
First of all, do things step by step. It is not good to listen to something beyond your level. Better choose a suitable course and start with the first book. Go on to the second book only after you are sure you understand the first one.
Secondly, stick to one course of study. Don’t change books often. Never let your attention be attracted by another course just because it seems to be more “ fashionable”(时髦).
Thirdly, listen to the English news programme over the radio from time to time. Better go through the news stories in the Chinese-language newspaper first. That will make it easy for you to understand the English news on the radio.
Fourthly, if you have time, listen to some interesting stories in “special English” from the VOA or other listening materials of the same level as that of your textbook.

Still, we can tell that some stars have planets. While a big planet goes round, it pulls its star to one side. And sometimes we can see this, Then we know that the star has a planet.

From the lower floors of building, escape through windows is possible. Learn the best way to get out from a window with the least chance of serious injury.
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average person, hanging by the fingertips will have a drop of about 6 feet to the ground. It is about twice the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way down than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed before opening the window. Otherwise, smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may have leaked into the room.
On the second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those which open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement might end in injury. Bushes and trees can help you to have a soft landing.
小题1:Which of the following should not be used when trying to escape from a fire?
A.Windows | B.Elevators | C.Fire exits | D.Stairways |
A.about 12 feet | B.about 6 feet |

A.breathing in smoke might be harmful | B.smoke will enter the room through an open window |
C.fresh air can’t reach the second floor window
D.to keep you head low will help you to escape a fire |
A.drop directly onto the ground | B.first drop onto a roof then onto the cement |
C.drop from a roof window then onto bushes and trees
D.drop onto the cement rather than bushes and grass |
Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in a place, men moved to another place. But this is no longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad to all living things in the world, but it is not only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us become angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop the people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from blowing dirty smoke into the air.
The pollution of SO2 is now the most dangerous problem of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. It is sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.
The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must keep careful of the rise in pollution at the same time.
小题1:Our world is becoming much smaller ___________.
A.because the earth is being polluted day and night. |
B.thanks to science developing. |
C.because of the rise in pollution |
D.because the earth is blown away by the wind every year. |
A.water pollution | B.air pollution | C.noise pollution | D.rubbish |
A.it’s bad to all living things in the world. |
B.it makes us become angry more easily. |
C.it has made our rivers and lakes dirty. |
D.it makes much noise. |
A.The problem of pollution is not so serious because there are not so many people. |
B.From now on, maybe people try to go to work by bus or bike instead of car or motorbike. It is helpful to fight against the pollution of SO2. |
C.The pollution of the earth grows as fast as the world’s pollution does. |
D.Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. |
If Dick had listened to his boss in 1925, we might not have a product that we now think of as of great importance: a new type of tape. Dick worked for the Minnesota Mining Company. At work he developed a kind of material strong enough to hold things together. But his boss told him not to think more about the idea. Finally, using his own time, Dick improved the tape, which now is used everywhere by many people. And his former company learned from its mistake. Now it encourages people to spend 15 percent of their work time just thinking about and developing new ideas.
Creativity is not something one is just born with, nor is it necessarily a character of high intelligence. The fact that a person is highly intelligent does not mean that he uses it creatively. Creativity is the matter of using the resources one has to produce new ideas that are good for something.
Unfortunately, schools have not tried to encourage creativity. With strong attention to test results and the development of reading, writing and mathematical skills, many educators give up creativity for correct answers. The result is that children can give back information but can’t recognize ways to use it in new situation. They may know the rules correctly but they are unable to use them to Work out practical problems.
It is important to give children choices. From the earlier age, children should be allowed to make decisions and understand their results. Even if it’s choosing between two food items for lunch, decision-making helps thinking skills. As children grow older, parents should let their children decide how to use their time or spend their money. This is because the most important character of creative people is a very strong desire to find a way out of trouble.
小题1:What did the company where Dick once worked learn from its mistake?
A.They encouraged people to work a longer time. |
B.They discouraged people to think freely. |
C.They asked people to spend all their work time developing new ideas. |

A.that people are born with |
B.that depends on intelligence |
C.that is a way of using what one has learnt to work out new problems |
D.that is not important at all |
A.They don’t understand the importance of education. |
B.They don’t want their students to make mistakes. |
C.They pay too much attention to exam marks, language and mathematical skills. |
D.They think it more important to remember some information. |
A.Try to help them as much as possible. | B.Take no notice of whatever they do. |
C.Leave them as they are. | D.Help them if their decision is wrong, but not too much.. |
