Bushwick is a tough place to grow up. This part of Brooklyn, in New York City, has a lot of crime. More than half of its 100,000 residents rely on aid from the government. Only 50% of students at Bushwick High School graduate in four years. Some people might say, “We should help these poor kids who have so many challenges.” But Malaak Compton-Rock looks at the teens in Bushwick and says, “ Go to help kids who have even bigger challenges than you do.” She believes that once young people see the power they have to make things better, they can handle their own problems more easily. So her service group, the Angel Rock Project, took 30 Bushwick kids to Soweto, in South Africa, to help poor families there. Soweto is a township outside the city of Johannesburg. The effort, called Journey for Change, aims to show that any kid can change the world. “Kids in Bushwick face pressure to drop out of school or become involved in gangs and drugs.” Says Compton-Rock. “We want them to live a life of purpose and service.” In Soweto, many parents have died of AIDS, a deadly disease. When that happens, a grandparent or a child must lead the family. The Bushwick volunteers helped such families. They tended vegetable gardens, cared for babies and bought groceries. “The saddest thing was when we visited an orphanage (孤儿院) and I helped a little boy who had been abandoned because he had HIV, the virus that causes AIDS,” says Queen Clyde, 12. “It‘s been good to be on this trip. But what’s also important is what we do when it’s finished. That’s what counts.” “ I never appreciated what I had until I saw some people who had nothing,” says Sadara Lewis, 12 “It’s really changed my attitude. I want to make a difference.” The trip was two weeks long. But the kids, aged 12 to 15, will spend all year speaking about their experience, fund-raising and more. 小题1:What’s the main idea of the first paragraph?A.Bushwick is the poorest place in New York City. | B.Bushwick still needs more care from the government. | C.It is children who suffer most in New York City. | D.Children in Bushwick are living in a bad situation. | 小题2:In Compton-Rock’s opinion, the Bushwick kids __________.A.have few challenges | B.should be kept out of schools | C.can learn to deal with their own problems by helping others | D.are living much better than people in Africa | 小题3:Compared to Bushwick kids, some children in Soweto __________.A.may have bigger challenges | B.receive no care from the government | C.are much more independent | D.are able to lead the family | 小题4:According to the passage, “Journey for Change” can be best seen as the saying “________”.A.God helps those who help themselves | B.saying and doing are two things | C.one stone kills two birds | D.a friend in need is a friend indeed | 小题5:From the passage we know that __________.A.there are few students in Bushwick High School | B.the trip to Soweto will have a long influence in spite of its short time. | C.most children are suffering from AIDS in Soweto | D.kids with HIV will be abandoned in Soweto |

As children grow up, they become curious about different kinds of things. When they are babies, they are interested in the parts of their bodies and in the smiles of their mothers. The they become interested in the physical world around them: the plants, the animals, the sky. Later, they become interested in the things that people have made: wheels, bicycles, cars. And when they are adults, their curiosity continues. Sometimes this curiosity leads to a career (生涯、职业) in science. Scientists spend their lives trying to find out about the world. Those who work with the earth sciences study the earth, the oceans, and the skies. Other scientists who study living things work with the biological sciences. A third group of scientists study the physical sciences, e. g. physics, chemistry . These scientists have already discovered a lot about our world. For example, they tell us why your heart beats fast when you run. They say that when you are quiet, your heart normally beats sixty-five or seventy-five times a minute. Your heart is a pump (泵) that pumps blood to all parts of the body. The blood carries oxygen and nutrition. When you run, your muscles work very hard and use the nutrition that the blood carries to them. The muscles need oxygen, too . So your brain sends a signal to the heart. The signal means that the muscles need more nutrition and oxygen. Then the heart beats fast and sends blood quickly to the muscles. It may beat 90 to 140 times a minute. Of course, scientists cannot answer all of our questions. If we ask, “Why does the ocean water taste salty?” Scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks. Rain falls into cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the earth and into the rivers. The rivers carry the salt into the ocean. But then we ask , “What happens to the salt in the ocean? The ocean does not get saltier every year.” Scientists are not sure about the answer to this question. We know a lot about our world, but there are still many answers that we do not have, and we are curious. 小题1:According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?A.People are curious in the same way. | B.People in different countries are interested in different things. | C.Men and women are curious about different things. | D.People of different ages are interested in different things | 小题2:Scientists who work with the biological sciences study____.A.the earth , the oceans and the sky | B.man-made things | C.plants and animals | D.ocean water | 小题3:When you run, your muscles need ____.A.more nutrition and oxygen | B.more signals | C.more salt | D.water |

Ammie Reddick from East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, was only 18 months old when she had the accident that had scarred(留下创伤) her for life. The curious child reached up to grab the wire of a hot kettle in the family kitchen and poured boiling water over her tiny infant frame. Her mother Ruby turned round and, seeing Ammie horribly burnt, called an ambulance which rushed her daughter to a nearby hospital. Twenty percent of Ammie’s body had been burned and all of her burns were third-degree. There, using tissue taken from unburned areas of Ammie’s body, doctors performed complex skin transplants to close her wounds and control her injuries, an operation that took about six hours. Over the next 16 years, Ammie underwent 12 more operations to repair her body. When she started school at Maxwelton Primary at age 4, other pupils made cruel comments or simply wouldn’t play with her. “I was the only burned child in the street, the class and the school,” she recalled, “some children refused to become friends because of that.” Today, aged 17, Ammie can only ever remember being a burned person with scars; pain is a permanent part of her body. She still has to have two further skin transplants. Yet she is a confident, outgoing teenager who offers inspiration and hope to other young burns victims. She is a member of the Scottish Burned Children’s Club, a charity set up last year. This month, Ammie will be joining the younger children at the Graffham Water Center in Cambridgeshire for the charity’s first summer camp. “I’ll show them how to get rid of unkind stares from others,” she says. Ammie loves wearing fashionable sleeveless tops, and she plans to show the youngsters at the summer camp that they can too. “I do not go to great lengths to hide my burns scars,” she says, “I gave up wondering how other people would react years ago.” 小题1:How many operations has Ammie already had?A.Twelve | B.Thirteen | C.fourteen | D.Fifteen | 小题2:What did other children do when Ammie first went to school?A.They were friendly to her. | B.They showed sympathy to her. | C.They were afraid of her. | D.They looked down upon her. | 小题3:Ammie will teach the younger children at the Graffham Water Center to___________.A.face others’ unkindness bravely | B.hide their scars by proper dressing | C.live a normal life | D.recover quickly | 小题4:Which of the following words can’t properly describe Ammie? Do you want to live forever? By the year 2050, you might actually get your wish — if you are willing to leave your biological body and live in silicon circuits (半导体电路).But long before then, perhaps as early as 2020, some measures will begin offering a semblance of immortality (虚拟的永生). Researchers are confident that technology will soon be able to track every waking moment of your life. Whatever you see and hear, all that you say and write, can be recorded, analyzed and added to your personal chronicles (履历). By the year 2030, it may be possible to catch your nervous systems through electrical activities, which would also keep your thoughts and emotions. Researchers at the laboratories of British Telecommunications have given the name of this idea as Soul Catcher. Small electronic equipment will make preparation for Soul Catcher. It would use a wearable supercomputer, perhaps in a wristwatch, with wireless links to micro sensors under your scalp(头皮) and in the nerves that carry all five sensory signals. So wearing a video camera would no longer be required. At first, the Soul Catcher"s companion system — the Soul Reader — might have trouble copying your thoughts in complete details. Even in 2030, we may still be struggling to understand how the brain is working inside, so reading your thoughts and understanding your emotions might not be possible. But these signals could be kept for the day when they can be transferred to silicon circuits to revitalize minds everlasting entities (永生实体). Researchers can only wonder what it will be like to wake up one day and find yourself alive inside a machine. For people who choose not to live in silicon, semblance of immortality would not be as useless as they thought. People would know their lives would not be forgotten, but would be kept a record of the human race forever. And future generations would have a much fuller understanding of the past. History would not be controlled by just the rich and powerful, Hollywood stars, and a few thinkers in the upper society. 小题1:The main idea of this passage is that _______.A.human beings long for living forever | B.there are many difficulties in making the Soul Catcher | C.people might live forever as technology develops | D.the invention of Soul Catcher has great importance | 小题2:According to this passage, a Soul Catcher will be ______.A.a new machine on which research measures have already been made | B.a new invention in order to catch and keep human"s thoughts and emotions | C.made by British scientists to offer something that looks like living forever | D.made of silicon circuits which can catch people"s nervous activity | 小题3:According to the writer, semblance of immortality is ______.A.to be a reality sooner or later | B.far from certain | C.just an idea that couldn"t t be realized at all | D.a fading hope | 小题4:The meaning of the underlined word "revitalize" in the fourth paragraph is close to .A.make dead | B.make famous | C.make known | D.make active |
